A night I'll remember for the rest of my career. ✨💜 I had the incredible honor of attending the 2026 Matrix Awards hosted by New York Women In Communications (NYWICI) in Manhattan on May 19 — an experience that still feels surreal. For nearly a century, NYWICI has uplifted women who are transforming the communications industry, and since 1970, the Matrix Awards have recognized trailblazers whose work has shaped journalism, media, entertainment, and the arts. Past honorees include icons like Gloria Steinem, Barbara Walters, Maya Angelou, Meryl Streep, Tina Fey, Gayle King, Norah O'Donnell, and so many other women whose careers have inspired my own aspirations. This year’s theme, The Butterfly Effect, celebrated women who create meaningful change and inspire future generations. Walking into that room, surrounded by leaders, storytellers, and creatives, felt like stepping into a dream. One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was meeting my 16 fellow scholarship winners. Every single person was incredibly accomplished, passionate, and driven, and I already know this community will continue to support and inspire me as I enter the professional world next year. The entire evening was unforgettable: connecting with industry leaders, speaking on the WomenHeard Podcast, and taking part in interviews and promotional content. The ceremony, opened by NYWICI President Beth Feldman and emceed by TODAY's show host Sheinelle Jones, was especially meaningful. The Matrix Award Honorees’ speeches stayed with me, shaping my vision of the professional and woman I hope to grow into. Being there with my mom, Christine Smith, made the experience even more special. It felt like a full circle moment — carrying on her legacy of strength and female representation in the humanities while pursuing my own path in journalism and communications. I am profoundly grateful to be the recipient of the Omnicom Scholarship. Thank you to Eileen Beverley for sponsoring this award and for being such a generous mentor — your guidance has already meant so much to me. Thank you as well to Nora Wesson, NYWICI’s Scholarship Liaison, for being an incredible point of contact and support during the Matrix Awards. And a heartfelt thank‑you to Donna-Jean Plante, CAE, Maria Ungaro, Sarah Lynch, and Chelsea Orcutt for your support throughout the entire scholarship process. A final thanks to #NYWICI, my mentors, recommenders, and the community that has lifted me up. This opportunity means more than I can express, and I’m honored to be part of such a powerful sisterhood. I’m equally grateful to Sheila Rayam for sharing my story through the University of Rochester School of Arts & Sciences, and to Juliet Sullivan and Belinda Redden in the URochester Fellowships Office for walking alongside me throughout this journey. As I enter my senior year of college, I hope my path inspires others to pursue their passions in media and communications. I’m so excited for everything ahead. 🦋
