We push for better buildings that achieve zero energy, zero carbon, and beyond.
About us
New Buildings Institute (NBI) is a nonprofit organization working to improve the energy performance of commercial buildings. We work collaboratively with commercial building market players—governments, utilities, energy efficiency advocates and building professionals—to remove barriers to energy efficiency, including promoting advanced design practices, improved technologies, public policies and programs that improve energy efficiency. We also develop and offer guidance to individuals and organizations on designing and constructing energy-efficient buildings through our suite of tools and resources.

A really insightful and timely perspective in BUILDINGS by Mauro J Atalla of Trane Technologies and Nora Wang Esram of New Buildings Institute, highlighting how buildings sit at the nexus of sustainability and human health, with a powerful business case to match. And appreciate that both are Commissioners of The Global Commission on Healthy Indoor Air, working to bring more attention and focus to the critical role of indoor air quality. Highly recommend taking a look. #Leadership #Sustainability #Health #IAQ #HealthyIndoorAir #EnergyEfficiency https://lnkd.in/e4VsT5KD

This week marks the one-year anniversary of our incredible CEO, Dr. Nora Wang Esram Esram, joining the New Buildings Institute team. Nora is not only a dynamic leader who has guided NBI through a turbulent year in the built environment sector – she is also a scholar, an architect, a collaborator, an innovator, and doer who has made a significant impact on clean air and energy efficiency efforts throughout her career. As Women’s History Month comes to a close, it is fitting that we highlight Nora’s leadership and contributions not only to NBI, but to a healthier and more resilient future for us all. Excited to co-author this piece on a simple idea we often overlook: Buildings are one of the most powerful levers for human health. Health is the foundation for everything we do—and it shouldn’t be a tradeoff. We don’t have to choose between clean air and energy efficiency. With the right collaboration and innovation, every building can—and should—be both efficient and healthy.

This #WomensHistoryMonth, we're celebrating women who shaped climate science, energy efficiency, and modern buildings! Today, we're starting with Alice Parker, who invented the first residential natural gas home heating system (awarded a patent in 1919). At a time when most homes were heated by burning coal or wood, Parker's invention offered a way to reduce fire risk and spread heat more evenly through a house. While little is known about Parker herself, her invention laid the groundwork for central heat and air, as well as the thermostats we see in buildings today. To see more about Parker's impact, as well as the many mysteries surrounding her life, enjoy this piece from Canary Media Inc.: https://lnkd.in/eRyQfqck Image below: Text about Alice Parker next to an image of her patent for a residential natural gas heating system. #WomensHistory #EnergyEfficiency #WomenInEnergy #WomenInSustainability
