At 21 years old, Claudia Umanita was preparing for her junior year at the University of Massachusetts Amherst when her life was forever changed by a diagnosis of colon cancer. Claudia had been referred to Massachusetts General Hospital to remove a mass in her colon. During the operation, her doctors discovered the mass was too large to take out. Soon after, her surgeon told her she had colon cancer. “When it turned out to be cancer, my family and I were completely caught off guard,” Claudia says. “That was some crazy news. Just a shock.” During her time at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, Claudia was supported by an incredible care team that included her oncologist Aparna Parikh, MD, and surgeon Hiroko Kunitake, MD, MPH. Throughout Claudia's chemotherapy, she managed to continue working as a teaching assistant while taking a full course load and getting straight A's. Today, Claudia’s cancer is in remission thanks to the care she received at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, including support through the Center for Young Adult Colorectal Cancer. While she continues to process the emotional and psychological effects of her diagnosis, she is once again looking ahead—this time with a deeper perspective and renewed optimism for the future. http://spklr.io/6045EyWBx

A new experimental therapy is showing early promise for people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In a clinical trial led by researchers at Mass General Brigham and Barrow Neurological Institute, the oral therapy PrimeC was found to be safe and well tolerated. PrimeC is designed to target several of the processes that drive the disease, which affects nerve cells and leads to muscle weakness as well as loss of movement. “The importance of following up on potential therapies that can slow the course of ALS is extraordinarily high for patients and families," says study author Merit Cudkowicz, MD, MSc. "We are determined to accelerate the development of therapies for people living with ALS.” http://spklr.io/6041EyRQ3

For patients with atrial fibrillation (A-fib), the most common cardiac arrhythmia, advanced treatment typically required a trip to Boston, where teams at Mass General Brigham’s academic medical centers performed a procedure to normalize their heart rhythm. Fortunately, that is no longer the case for A-fib patients in communities north of the city. Patients served by Salem Hospital and those in the seacoast communities of southern New Hampshire and Maine near Wentworth-Douglass Hospital now have a much shorter commute. Both hospitals recently launched A-fib ablation programs, bringing advanced cardiac care closer to home for scores of patients while helping to alleviate demand at our capacity-strained academic medical centers.
