It's been a big month at Ignite Reading. In addition to TWO successful webinars and a lot of exciting projects, we also got to celebrate a huge honor for one of our own very special team members. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Education's Center for Research and Reform in Education tracked groups of students from the start of 1st grade to the end of 2nd grade and found something incredible: When kids weren't reading at grade level by the end of 1st grade, only about 1 in 8 caught up the next year. But when they did reach grade level by the end of 1st grade, 17 in 20 kid stayed on benchmark through grade 2. This means that 1st grade is a pivotal year, and it can make a huge difference for kids learning to read. 💫 Kids won’t just “catch up later" when it comes to reading, but we know what works RIGHT NOW.
