Changing the world’s energy future and securing our nation's critical infrastructure ⚛️
About us
In operation since 1949, Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science and national defense. The world's first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated here in 1951. At 890 square miles (569,135 acres), the INL Site is roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. In addition to our geographic resources, the lab hosts a variety of unique facilities, including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. Complementing our nuclear research, the lab has numerous alternative energy and national security programs. Robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management and advanced vehicle testing are just a few examples of our multifaceted research capabilities. If you are looking for a 21st-century energy or technology career, visit our Careers tab at www.inl.gov.

Meet Jan Lambrechtsen 👋, a research mechanical design engineer at INL. Lambrechtsen designs and builds complex systems that test cutting-edge integrated energy technology, working closely with safety specialists and regulatory authorities to ensure every system meets INL's rigorous standards. Integrated energy systems convert energy from different sources like water power or nuclear into usable fuels and chemicals. By refining this process, INL is helping increase America's energy security and resilience. "I chose engineering because I've always wanted to create and build interesting, impactful things," said Lambrechtsen. "I chose to work at INL because it's a place where innovation meets real-world energy challenges, and where my work can contribute to shaping how the world produces and uses energy." Anthony Gomulka is an INL instrumentation and controls engineer supporting the development of advanced nuclear reactor technologies. ⚛️ "I pursued engineering because I've always been driven to build and create,” Gomulka said. “Turning ideas and concepts into real, functional solutions is incredibly rewarding to me." He is working on integrating the Haption and camera systems for the Mechanical Properties Test Cell at INL's Sample Preparation Laboratory. "The Haption system controls our robotic arms similar to how an operator would control a traditional manipulator," Gomulka said. "Our camera system utilizes 10 cameras strategically positioned around the hot cell to provide ample views of all sample handling and testing operations.” Gomulka said researchers will use the system to study post-irradiated structural materials, supporting the development of advanced reactor technologies.
