What is your greatest professional achievement and why does it hold such meaning for you? I think becoming a partner and a leader of the firm is my greatest achievement to date, as it shows that people respect my practice, opinions and business judgment. What attracted you to a career in law? I was interested in the critical thinking of the practice of law and thought that a career in law could be challenging and rewarding.
Career Overview Professional StaffPierce Han is a partner in Ice Miller's Business Group, where he focuses on mergers & acquisitions and international commercial transactions.
What attracted you to a career in law? I initially had zero interest in the law. Most of my family members have careers in the medical field, so that was my original pursuit almost by default. During my sophomore year in college, I spent my second semester and the following summer in Washington, D.C., working as an intern for a financial services lobbying firm. Working alongside registered lobbyists and staffers on Capitol Hill, most of whom held law degrees but weren’t necessarily practicing law, really opened my eyes to other career paths outside of medicine.
Laterals New Hire AssociatesFreedom Smith is a partner in the firm’s Environmental Group and works in the areas of toxic tort litigation, agriculture, and general litigation.
What attracted you to a career in law? I was drawn to the law through exposure to a conservation/environmental dispute during an internship during college. Seeing the difference between the roles the lawyers played versus the general agency employees made me re-evaluate how I wanted to approach issues facing the general public. In the end, the ability to make a difference in the everyday lives of people on issues that could impact the community on issues of key importance led me to pursue law. If you didn’t become a lawyer, what field do you think you would have entered? I would have continued pursuing biology or environmental studies.
