EIROforum’s biannual Directors-General Assembly took place in Brussels last week 🇧🇪 The event was hosted by EMBL, current chair of EIROforum until the end of June. The meeting brought together the Directors General of Europe’s leading intergovernmental research organisations to discuss the future of scientific cooperation. Discussions addressed how Europe’s major research infrastructures can continue to support international collaboration and strengthen Europe’s innovation capacity and competitiveness. The Assembly also welcomed distinguished external guests, including Michiel Scheffer 🇪🇺, President of the Board of the European Innovation Council (EIC), Carthage Smith, Senior Policy Analyst and Lead Co-ordinator at OECD Global Science Forum, and Lodovico Folin Calabi, Director of UNESCO Office in Brussels and Representative to the EU. A sincere thank you to all participants and guest speakers for helping shape a shared vision for a strong, open and forward-looking European research ecosystem. EIROforum welcomes the European Commission’s proposal for FP10 and its ambition to strengthen Europe’s scientific and technological leadership. In its new statement on the future EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, EIROforum highlights four priorities for a strong, stand-alone, and excellence-driven FP10: 🔹 A strong and predictable budget: the proposed €175 billion should be regarded as a strict minimum, with FP10 remaining a coherent, legally self-standing programme. 🔹 Scientific excellence and frontier research: sustained support for fundamental research, talent development, and attractive career pathways is essential to underpin Europe’s long-term competitiveness, including in key areas such as AI. 🔹 Research infrastructures: Europe’s world-class infrastructures are strategic capabilities for discovery, innovation, and industrial uptake. Their role in FP10 should be reinforced, with a stronger dedicated work programme that prioritises the upgrading of existing infrastructures. 🔹 Open international collaboration: trusted partners and associated countries remain essential to Europe’s scientific excellence, global impact, and long-term innovation capacity. EIROforum also stresses the importance of a clear governance and operational interface between FP10 and the European Competitiveness Fund, so that complementarities strengthen, rather than dilute, Europe’s scientific base. Join us in celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 🌟 We’re recognising the impact that women make across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. While the percentage of women in STEM has increased, women still make up only one-third of the global scientific workforce, according to UNESCO. In some countries, less than 10% of researchers are women. 👩🔬 To mark the occasion, we reached out to women across our member organisations and asked them what they think it takes to close the gender gap in STEM, the advice that’s made an impact on them, and the practical actions, systems, or cultural shifts they’ve seen – or helped create – that are making a real difference. What advice has made a real impact on you? 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eEMwVxFa #WomenAndGirlsInScience #WomenInSTEM CERN, EMBL, European Space Agency - ESA, European Southern Observatory, ESRF - The European Synchrotron, EUROfusion, European XFEL, ILL - Institut Laue Langevin
