Inspiring Hope. Strengthening Families. Restoring Communities.
About us
"Empowering youth and their families to make sound choices and achieve promising futures." Directions for Youth & Families offers programs that provide community-based treatment and prevention services that emphasize commitment to the family, school, and work. Services are provided through innovative programs that focus on the redirection of self-defeating behaviors and assisting youth and families in leading positive and productive lives. We believe every person has a right to grow up in a healthy environment, free of neglect and abuse. We affirm people’s right to self-awareness, self-respect, self-fulfillment, and confidentiality. Youth and families can best learn new behaviors in their natural environment and we believe that strengthening family relationships will bring about the most significant changes. We support the basic values of the human service field beginning with where the client is and protecting an individual’s right to self-determination. Our accepting and non-judgmental approach respects each individual and the family unit, recognizing strengths in diversity, culture, values, and belief systems. We promote an individual and family’s right to choose. Our purpose is not to make choices for people, nor tell them what to decide. We discuss options with those we serve and respect their decisions, thereby preserving and affording people the opportunity to learn and grow from the choices they make regarding their lives.

Join us for Inspire Us, an evening of inspiration, impact, and powerful student voices. On March 24th, our student leaders will take center stage to share how they're changing the world through service-learning in the See Kids Dream program. From learning the fundamentals of philanthropy, to researching nonprofits, interviewing community leaders, and creating real projects that give back, this is youth leadership in action. Inspire Us gives you a sneak peek into the program and the opportunity to hear directly from the kids about how serving their community is shaping who they are becoming. Your support makes this possible. Proceeds from the event directly support service-learning within schools allowing us to reach more students, partner with more educators, and invest in the next generation of compassionate leaders. For more than three decades, Duane Casares has led Directions for Youth & Families with passion, purpose, and vision. Duane was the first Masters Licensed social worker at DFYF, serving as both a clinician and Clinical Director before eventually becoming CEO. He has dedicated his life to supporting youth and families in our community, but his reach extends even further. Nationally, Duane has been a leader in advancing trauma-informed care in the mental health space. He has spoken at the White House, New York City Public Schools, Boston University Law School, and many more organizations about the need for comprehensive care and DFYF's outreach model. Last month, DFYF's @ShadejaNelson led a powerful training on Preventing Child Trafficking. Our clinicians learned about the different types of human trafficking, the risk factors, and the warning signs. In the ever-changing landscape of the modern world, we recognize the need for frequent, comprehensive trainings for our staff. Not only does continuous education set them up for success professionally, it ensures that our clients get the high quality care they deserve. #Education #MentalHealth

At Directions for Youth & Families, we believe that developing strong leaders starts from within. By equipping our team with the tools, insights, and confidence to lead with empathy and accountability, we strengthen our entire organization and, ultimately, the youth and families we serve. Recently, two of our incredible staff, Hannah Ellingson, Clinical Program Manager, and Sierra Williams, Internship Program Manager, completed the ADAMH Board of Franklin County Leadership Academy, a program designed to cultivate leadership excellence in behavioral health professionals. Through this experience, Hannah and Sierra deepened their understanding of leadership styles, learning how to hold others accountable while remaining supportive, collaborating more effectively with supervisors, and adapting leadership approaches to meet diverse learning styles.

International Youth Day reminds us that when we believe in young people and provide them with support, mentorship, and opportunities, they soar beyond what anyone thought possible. At Cramer, we’ve had the honor of partnering with countless youth organizations - from Directions for Youth & Families and Boys & Girls Club of Dayton, Ohio to The Childhood League Center, St. Vincent Family Services, and schools like Cristo Rey Columbus High School & KIPP Columbus. These organizations see brilliance in young people and create pathways for them to write futures filled with hope and purpose. Through compassionate mentorship and unwavering care, they are changing lives while weaving threads of possibility throughout their entire communities. 🎥 Witness our most recent partnership with Directions for Youth & Families and the incredible impact created through a new Crittenton Community Center on Columbus’s far-east side. Today, at Cramer & Associates, we celebrate the boundless potential within every young person, waiting to change the world. #InternationalYouthDay #YouthEmpowerment #PartnersInPhilanthropy #DFYF
