🇵🇷 We're still buzzing from our incredible week in Puerto Rico. Last month, our team traveled to the island to join the Puerto Rico Department of Education's Special Education Secretariat, the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP), and an amazing network of partners for four days of hands-on professional development focused on accessible media in the Spanish-language classroom. From Ponce to San Juan, we worked alongside teachers, parents, and students, exploring captions, audio description, and inclusive media as real tools for real classrooms. The energy in those rooms is something we will carry with us forever. 🇵🇷 Three days in Puerto Rico — and we are overwhelmed with gratitude ✨ Over the past three days, we have had the incredible honor of welcoming hundreds of teachers, parents, and children at the Universidad de Puerto Rico in San Juan and Ponce for hands-on workshops centered on accessible educational media in Spanish. Watching local educators discover new tools, seeing parents connect with resources that can transform their children's learning, and experiencing the energy of students engaging with accessible content — this is exactly why we do this work. 💙 ¡Y aún no hemos terminado! We are thrilled to kick off Accessible Media in the Spanish-Language Classroom: Puerto Rico — a four-day professional development experience bringing together teachers, families, and students with sensory disabilities from across the island. From February 24–27, we will explore the transformative power of captions, audio description, and sign language in educational media. 🎉 We will gather in San Juan and Ponce alongside our incredible partners at the Puerto Rico Department of Education's Special Education Secretariat and the DCMP, with the support of the U.S. Department of Education–OSEP, Proyecto Sordociegos de PR, and APNI. Together, we are fostering meaningful discussions and collaborations to serve more than 450 students with sensory disabilities — from Pre-K through Grade 12. 🙌 Because accessible media is our passion, we can't wait to collaborate with experts across Puerto Rico to expand the availability of high-quality accessible educational media in Spanish for all students. Stay tuned — we'll be sharing highlights and updates from the field! ✨ Estamos preparados para dar inicio a Accessible Media in the Spanish-Language Classroom: Puerto Rico, una experiencia de desarrollo profesional de cuatro días que reunirá a maestros, familias y estudiantes con discapacidades sensoriales de toda la isla. Del 24 al 27 de febrero, exploraremos cómo los subtítulos para sordos, la audiodescripción y la lengua de señas en el contenido audiovisual pueden ampliar las oportunidades de aprendizaje. Nos encontraremos en San Juan y Ponce junto a nuestros aliados de la Secretaría de Educación Especial del Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico y el DCMP, con el respaldo del Departamento de Educación de los Estados Unidos (OSEP), el Proyecto Sordociegos de PR y APNI. Thank you so much Dicapta and Fred Rogers Productions for putting together this workshop on descriptive audio and accessible screenwriting!! In college, my film classes always challenged us to use as little dialogue as possible, so it was very cool to get a new perspective on how to make visual media more accessible to blind viewers while keeping the descriptions in tune with tone, pacing, story, and character.
