We’re skeptical (in a good way 😉) and data-driven. We’re diverse in focus with the ability to zoom out and see the entire economy. Our deliverables are based in scientific studies without bias, and shared openly to generate a network effect for innovation. Why D^3? Because AI is only half the answer. --- Kara Miller’s overview with Karim Lakhani and Jen Stave, PhD kicks off a showcase series that will dive into the work of our labs and the angles we’re taking to invent the future. #FutureTech #Innovation #BusinessExcellence #DigitalInnovation #BusinessTechnology #AIAdvancements #DigitalTransformation #InnovationInBusiness

(Re)inventing how organizations compete and thrive in the digital world and educating a new generation of leaders
About us
Technological change is reshaping business, the global economy, and societies. The accelerating pace of this change is simultaneously driven by digital, data, and design: • Digital: digitization is happening everywhere, impacting all industries, the world is getting digitized • Data: using data science and AI to analyze all facets of company, economic, and human data produced from digitization • Design: engaging human-centered design to unlock the value of data science and deploy it as a tool Leaders today identify digitization as one of their top three priorities — along with climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Digital, Data, and Design Institute at Harvard (re)invents how organizations compete and thrive in the digital world and educates a new generation of leaders. D^3 (pronounced D-cubed) provides a new architecture for rigorous research, immersive learning, and cutting-edge practice by embracing close partnerships and collaborations with leaders and organizations impacted by digital transformation. Critically, the Institute houses both technical research in data science and machine learning alongside research examining broader business implications, allowing faculty in disparate disciplines to unite around common interests. D^3 is based at Harvard Business School, but seeks to engage and benefit all of Harvard. With 14 labs, 30+ faculty members, and 6 Communities of Practice, D^3 enables companies to be more competitive in the age of AI and generate new organizational models.

We're grateful to have joined NTT DATA Group in Tokyo for an insightful exchange on the future of AI in business. Thank you to Yutaka Sasaki for the warm welcome and the engaging discussion on AI literacy, NTT's Smart AI Agent™ concept, and the evolving demands of the global workforce. D^3's Karim Lakhani and Jen Stave, PhD shared perspectives on how AI is reshaping business education and strategy. The conversation reinforced a shared vision: AI is no longer optional—it’s foundational to organizational growth and innovation. We look forward to continued dialogue and global collaboration around responsible, impactful AI adoption. #AI #BusinessInnovation #SmartAIAgent #NTTDATA
It was a pleasure welcoming Professor Karim Lakhani and Dr. Jen Stave from Harvard Business School's Digital Data Design Institute to our office here in Tokyo. We had meaningful discussions on the evolving role of AI as a new form of business literacy and its growing impact across industries. They shared that Harvard Business School is considering the introduction of AI-related courses — an important signal of how essential these skills have become. We also presented our Smart AI Agent™ concept, including task-specific AI agents and orchestration AI agents. We explored how AI is improving task quantity, processing time, and work quality — boosting productivity across all skill levels. We will continue expanding AI-driven solutions globally. I look forward to the innovations that may emerge from this valuable exchange of ideas. Karim Lakhani,Jen Stave, PhD

As generative AI reshapes industries, a critical gap demands attention. A recent Harvard Business School working paper, Global Evidence on Gender Gaps and Generative AI, co-authored by Nick Otis, Solene Delecourt, Katelyn Cranney, and Rem Koning, finds that women are about 20% less likely than men to adopt generative AI tools worldwide. Drawing from 18 studies and data from over 140,000 individuals, the researchers highlight a persistent, global gender divide—one that remains even when access to AI tools is equalized. Factors such as workplace exposure, professional networks, and self-assessed familiarity with AI contribute to the divide, threatening to reinforce future inequalities in technology and innovation. If left unaddressed, this gap risks biasing AI systems at their earliest stages and limiting the inclusive potential of AI-driven progress. What if the next billion-dollar startup wasn’t built in Silicon Valley—but in Nairobi, Jakarta, or Phnom Penh? In this episode of the The Rundown's Embedded podcast, host Zain Verjee speaks with Harvard Business School Professor Rem Koning, Co-Director of the Tech for All Lab at D^3. They explore how generative AI can help entrepreneurs in emerging markets scale smarter, faster, and more inclusively. The conversation highlights research-backed innovations like AI business advisors built into WhatsApp and a major partnership with Grab that supports millions of small businesses across Southeast Asia. With a strong focus on accessibility and local relevance, the Tech for All Lab is demonstrating how AI can democratize access to mentorship and entrepreneurial growth.
