LOOK WHO'S IN THE SPOTLIGHT!! This will be my 20th year partnering with Costco. I was motivated to start with Costco because of Costco Optical’s reputation of quality and value, and the access to a built-in patient base. My first location opened in 2006 in a new warehouse in Atlanta, GA. Upon moving to Austin, TX in 2012, I took over the lease on an existing location and started Great Hills Eye Care. We have now grown to 4 locations in metro Austin. The guiding light of our practice is our mission: to help people see clearly and keep their eyes healthy by providing caring, convenient, and cutting-edge eye care. By making eye care easy for our patients, we give our patients many reasons to return each year. From day one I have always operated my practice on a larger scale, and with a larger vision than its physical footprint. As one of the most highly rated practices in Austin, we have over 3,000 online reviews. An astounding 98% of our patients would refer us. This is all possible because of all the wonderful doctors and team members in our practice, along with our colleagues at Costco Optical, that live out our mission every day. I would like to extend my immense gratitude and shine the true spotlight on our amazing team, past and present. One of the best aspects of partnering with Costco is that you get to practice pure Optometry, focusing your energy and efforts solely on providing the best experience possible for your patients. To keep this experience consistent, [we developed] systems for all aspects of the business, including a comprehensive optometric technician training program [and] a Patient Encounter System that all our doctors implement. This system builds on the skills of our doctors by ensuring all patients receive a 5-star visit. We maintain a strong relationship with our colleagues at Costco Optical. Costco also provides a stellar clinic framework with access to the latest technology. This aligns with our goal of providing cutting edge care, and has contributed to the steady growth of our practice. As an integral part of our patient’s healthcare journey, we go beyond just prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses. One patient that stands out, is a woman that came in for a routine eyeglass exam, and we performed a simple screening visual field exam at that visit. We found a concerning defect and made a prompt referral. Further testing revealed that she had an impending brain aneurysm. The patient later [reported] successful vascular surgery and that we saved her life. Examples like this show how partnering with Costco and focusing on the highest quality care can make life-changing impacts on your patients. Dr. Karishma Arora took on the challenge of leasing space at a brand-new Costco location that opened in October 2020, right in the midst of the pandemic. “The early days were all about building a patient base and getting the word out,” she recalls. With Costco’s strong reputation and loyal member base as a foundation, she and her team worked tirelessly—handing out business cards, distributing flyers, and personally engaging with members throughout the warehouse. Her efforts paid off. Word of mouth has been the biggest driver of growth, and today, the practice continues to thrive with the help of creative strategies like the weekly optical department table on Fridays, which reminds members that eye exams are available on-site. Why Costco? For Dr. Arora, entrepreneurship runs in the family. “Coming from parents who have been small business owners my entire life, I knew I wanted to combine my passion for helping others with the fulfillment of building something of my own,” she says.
