BNIM is excited to share that the Black & Veatch Headquarters and surrounding development have been approved by the Overland Park City Council. We’re proud to collaborate with Black & Veatch and our project partners, on this innovative development and look forward to sharing more about the project, our collaboration, and the team bringing this vision to life soon. “Black & Veatch was once a startup,” said Steve McDowell FAIA LEED AP, Principal at BNIM. “Engineers E.B. Black and N.T. Veatch set out to help society achieve healthy, safe, and efficient systems for modern life with new infrastructure in water and sewer, power, transportation, and more. Humans helping humans. The new headquarters is designed to inspire this entrepreneurial spirit in an innovative ecosystem that will empower future generations of professionals and industry leaders. A vision decades in the making is taking shape. We’re excited to share that the Overland Park City Council has unanimously approved plans for our new World Headquarters and surrounding mixed-use development. For more than 50 years, Overland Park has been home to Black & Veatch. This next chapter reflects our long-term commitment to our people, our clients and the Kansas City region. Designed to support collaboration, innovation and wellbeing, the new campus will create a dynamic environment for our team while contributing to a vibrant, walkable community. We’re grateful to the City of Overland Park, the State of Kansas and all those who helped bring this vision forward. With groundbreaking planned for this fall, we look forward to continuing to build a world of difference right here in Overland Park. In 10 days, I'll be riding in Bike MS: Kansas City with my team from BNIM, my sixth year taking part, to raise money for the National MS Society: funding research, treatment, and support for the nearly 1 million people in the US living with MS. This year I set a goal of $2,000, and thanks to generous friends, family, and colleagues, we're closing in on my next milestone of $1500. I'd love to close that gap before ride day with your help! https://lnkd.in/gYqzaVTK Painting Raffle Details: To make the campaign a little different this year, I tied it to something I don't usually mix with work: landscape painting. Every $500 raised, I create a new 5x7 painting of a scene from somewhere I've ridden around Kansas City this season, and raffle it off among donors. Two of four paintings have already gone to supporters. Eligibility is based on how much you've given in total, not any single gift: - $1,500 milestone (almost there): $100 or more given in total - $2,000 milestone, the final one: $250 or more given in total

My friend and colleague, Laura Lesniewski,Laura Lesniewski, Board Chair of Westside Housing Organization - celebrating 53 years of this critical organization’s servant-leadership to KC’s Westside and beyond: providing pathways to home ownership, stability, and belonging to marginalized communities. Nonprofits like Westside Housing are deeply struggling right now, with almost every level of funding beyond philanthropic giving closed to them. I learned early in my non-profit leadership that there are 3 critical ways to give to a cause you believe in: 1. treasure - money to maintain programs and staff 2. Talent - giving your professional expertise and access to your professional network. 3. Time - sometimes (but not always - read the room) just showing up and asking “how can I help”? So please join me in giving where and how you can to meet this tough moment for the great works of non-profit passion that represent the best of us.

Meet BNIM's Intern Team! This summer, BNIM is grateful to have welcomed four exceptional interns into our Kansas City and Des Moines offices, each bringing their curiosity, enthusiasm, and fresh perspectives to our studio teams. Throughout their time with us, they became part of our collaborative office community, contributed meaningfully to a range of projects, and were immersed in the daily conversations and moments that shape our practice. Click the link below to read more on Micah, Chloe, Zane, and Peace as they reflect on the experiences, lessons, and memories from their summer internships. https://lnkd.in/gSBrBzUn

Rachel Carson wrote that the harder path was "our last, our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of the earth." That line, from her own words as a Chatham alumna, became something like a compass point for the Eden Hall Campus master plan we worked together on with Biohabitats, Andropogon Associates, Ltd., Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. Congratulations to the whole team, Mithun, and to Chatham University, for carrying Carson's vision forward. If you are interested in learning more about the plan, see below: https://lnkd.in/gjWxZFdb

What would Rachel Carson think? If she were alive today and could return to Chatham University, her alma mater, we hope she’d be pleased with Eden Hall Campus, the world’s first academic community built to showcase sustainability. Having contributed to the master plan (alongside BNIM, Andropogon Associates, Ltd., Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc.) and developed the campus’ advanced onsite wastewater treatment system (with Mithun & CEC), we are! This constructed wetland, an important natural component of the system, removes nitrogen and helps filter up to 6,000 gallons of campus wastewater per day—enough to be reused for toilet flushing. Excess effluent is slowly dispersed back into the soil through subsurface irrigation, safely recharging groundwater and helping to protect the larger watershed. Along with rest of the Eden Hall Campus and its systems that slow and infiltrate stormwater, generate onsite renewable energy, grow and harvest sustainable crops, and integrate teaching and learning throughout, Chatham University has created a model for sustainable living, learning, and design! Kansas City area friends: Tuesday’s storms hit Northeast Kansas City, Kansas hard — thousands of households are still without power, and many streets and yards have significant tree damage. A coalition of local organizations (Justice for Wyandotte, Build WyCo, Groundwork NRG, and others) has organized a volunteer response, and they need our help this Saturday. What’s needed: Volunteers for neighborhood outreach, cleanup, deliveries, skilled repairs, and medical wellness checks. Chainsaws, hand saws, power tools, and trucks are especially welcome if you have them. When: Saturday, volunteer hours run 9 AM–7 PM (come for any portion that works for you) Where: Meet at The Village Initiative, 27th & Quindaro, Kansas City, KS Before you go: • Please fill out the volunteer sign-up form in advance (https://lnkd.in/gB_HE2Y7) • Track your volunteer hours — documented time may help the community meet FEMA disaster-recovery matching requirements • Questions about the sign-up process: Nikki Richardson, (913) 563-8700 More info and additional resources (shelters, cooling centers, tree debris drop-off, etc.) are here: After the Storm KCK (https://lnkd.in/gKJAEMuX) If you can lend a hand (even for a couple hours) it will make a real difference for neighbors who are still recovering.

UC Berkeley students return to a transformed Moffitt Library — the completion of the Carol T. Christ Center for Connected Learning. Three renovated floors reimagine what a brutalist 1970 building can offer a new generation of undergraduates. The project expands a well established student-centered facility with 750+ additional seats for student study, new scholar-in-residence spaces, a new student lounge, and updated building systems, technology, security, and life safety upgrades. A re-envisioned entry welcomes students and visitors through a new art exhibit space and access to an expanded Free Speech Movement Café. Bringing students together to learn, create, and connect, the renovation of floors 1–3 builds on the foundation set by the work completed previously on floors 4 and 5, creating a facility that is flexible yet culturally and aesthetically harmonized. As technology and the nature of pedagogy continue to evolve, Moffitt Library will remain a space that serves the campus community long into the future. More to come on this project this fall. https://lnkd.in/grkbsfif https://lnkd.in/gqpyB8vA

BNIM Office Happy Hour Today, the team got together for drinks and a Keep / Toss / Create exercise, talking through how our space supports the way we work, design, and collaborate. What's working, what's not, and what we want from what comes next. Good conversation, and more to come.
