Effective communication with clients from diverse cultures is much like designing a timeless space—it requires understanding, empathy, and adaptability. I approach each interaction as a dialogue, listening to their unique narratives and interpreting these into a design language that resonates universally. By weaving cultural context into conceptual clarity, I ensure the client feels seen, not just heard, making the process collaborative rather than transactional. The goal isn’t just a structure—it’s a shared story told through design.

It is rewarding and challenging to work with people with diverse cultures. I worked with a family who didn't want compartmentalised interiors. We used screening throughout the design spaces which could be pulled back to allow more internal freedom of designed areas. Orientation to North allowed full sun into the frequently used areas. Mud bricks were used on the walls and huge overhangs installed to protect the mud bricks from intense weather. Client wanted natural materials internally. Slabs of timber were installed for benches and tee tree Handrails were placed along stairs. The whole design process became a work of art implementing unmodern style choices for the materiality for the project. Very rewarding.

Communicating with clients from different cultures is about understanding and connection. I make it a priority to listen closely to their needs and learn about their cultural backgrounds, so the design reflects who they are. To ensure we’re on the same page, I use clear, simple language and rely on visuals like mood boards or sketches, which can often say more than words. I also create a comfortable, collaborative environment where they feel free to share their ideas and feedback. By staying flexible, respectful, and open, I aim to design spaces that truly honor their culture and individuality.
