Adopt a cloud-based modular ERP to provide flexibility, growth potential, and easier integration with new innovations such as AI and IoT. Balance data management policies, security, and regulatory compliance adequatley. Foster enduring success by providing appropriate training to users, conducting frequent evaluations, and making necessary updates for improvement to the system.

An organization can have one or more strategic business objectives like operational excellence, competitive advantage, improved decision-making, new product or business model, customer or supplier intimacy and survival of the fittest. After identifying the weaknesses of the existing processes and systems, it is possible to determine the organizational requirements for achieving the chosen strategic objectives. For example, the organization needs Automotive ERP for operational excellence, Customer Relationship Management for customer intimacy, Business Analytics for improved decision-making or ERP to replace accounting software for survival as the organization's competitors are already using an ERP.

For me, a successful ERP project starts with listening. I ask: what’s frustrating people, where are we wasting time, and what do we wish we could see but can’t? I’ve learned that clear strategic goals only stick when they’re co-created, not imposed. I involve teams in shaping KPIs so they’re meaningful, not just tick-boxes. Regular check-ins keep stakeholders engaged and expectations realistic. I measure success by how confidently people use the system—and whether it actually helps them make better decisions. If it doesn’t make life easier or smarter, it’s not success in my book.

ERP selection is not simple as there are many solutions. Tier 1 ERPs are for large firms with over 1000 employees or those with very complex ERP requirements. Tier 2 ERPs target small and medium firms. There are some very scalable cloud ERPs that can be implemented for small firms which can continue to use the same ERP as they grow into large firms. This avoids the complexity of replacing an ERP by another one which represents an ERP implementation project. Cloud ERP needs less internal implementation efforts and upfront investment than on-premise ERP but is usually less configurable to fit specific client needs. Cloud ERP subscription fees are paid monthly whereas on-premise perpetual or term ERP licences are purchased or renewed annually.
