Some leaders prefer immediate insights—start with the conclusion. Others value a narrative—guide them through the story. Occasionally, captivating visuals take precedence, with details shared afterward. I recall working with a leader who valued brevity and clarity, insisting that any topic, unless highly complex, should be covered in just 3-4 slides. Tailoring your presentation to align with these varying preferences not only respects your audience’s time but also enhances the likelihood of your message being well-received and acted upon.

I try to remember that presentation is always about the audience - if the feedback is that I should modify or adjust my approach to better reach my audience, I can either find ways to adapt or determine that this is perhaps not the type of audience I want to try and connect with.

This is key to tailoring your message. Is your audience visionary, more data-driven, and analytical? What outcomes do they want? Oftentimes, we see people present information in a way that appeals to the presenter, not the audience. Use anecdotes, stories, openings, and closings that will connect with those you are presenting to in order to capture their interest initially, connect with them, and maintain their interest and focus on your topic.

In my experience, when clients come to me feeling "off" in their delivery, it’s not their message—it’s the method. They’re saying the right things… just not in a way that sticks. → I always say: Don’t change your voice—just adjust the volume and the vehicle. → You’re not “doing too much”—you’re doing it in outdated formatting. This is what most are overlooking: The problem isn’t what you’re saying. It’s how aligned it is with where you are now.
