Building a classroom that ensures every student feels valued starts with relationships. From teaching high school computer science to higher ed, I’ve found that scheduling one-on-one meetings helps identify individual needs and goals. Beyond that, engaging verbally with each student outside of lecture content builds trust and a sense of belonging. For students to feel valued, the teacher needs to CARE about them and this can be shown through those relationships or by the ultimate experience they are creating within the classroom. This could be creative activities or something as simple as buying your students donuts and spending time with them before the class starts.
