National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released results for Berkeley from the second annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 30,000 renters, provides insight into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.
“Renters in Berkeley are fairly well satisfied with their city,” says Andrew Woo, Director of Data Science at Apartment List. “They gave many categories above-average scores.”
Key findings in Berkeley include the following:

Academic energy thrives near UC Berkeley's campus, offering renters walkable access to the Berkeley Art Museum and Gourmet Ghetto eateries. Converted Victorian homes lack soundproofing against 2AM noise from Telegraph Avenue bars. Limited parking during Berkeley Repertory Theatre events.
Academic activism thrives near UC Berkeley's People's Park. Renters score Craftsman bungalows but note 2AM noise from Telegraph Avenue's punk venues. The Thursday Farmers' Market at Derby Street temporarily overwhelms street parking.
Intellectual energy defines Berkeley's Northside, where rentals near UC Berkeley offer walkable access to both campus facilities and the popular Gourmet Ghetto dining district. The neighborhood features distinctive architecture from brown-shingled craftsman homes to elegant apartment buildings reflecting Berkeley's architectural diversity. Though student population creates competitive rental markets requiring advance planning, the proximity to both educational resources and North Berkeley's renowned restaurants creates compelling advantages beyond purely economic considerations for those connected to academic environments.
