The best Spider-man game since Spider-man 2
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 October 2018Every Spider-man game since Spider-man 2 has been compare to and failed against Activision and Treyarch's amazing title. This PS4 exclusive Spider-man, this time handled by the excellent team at Insomniac Games is possibly the first time a game in the series not only matches up but exceeds the benchmark.
Instead of following any particular Spider-man movie or media version, Insomniac Games have gone with a generic version which works in their favour, not being bogged down by having to fit in with previous storylines and able to feature a huge swath of characters from villains to old friends and some who have yet to become either.
The game sees Peter Parker working for Doctor Octavius after having quit the Bugle but is finding it tough paying rent and saving the city at the same time. His ex-flame Mary Jane Watson is on hand for advice and support, as is Aunt May, now working in a homeless shelter while Norman Osborne runs the city as mayor.
After an early run in with Kingpin, serving as a subtle tutorial, leads to his arrest and the breakdown of his gangs, another mysterious group take to the streets, causing problems for Spidey and his friends. Unravelling the mystery of this group will lead to a few big surprises and some even bigger troubles. It's a well written story which will have you intrigued until the end, even setting things up for the possibility of DLC based add-ons without you feeling short changed.
The biggest feature this new Spider-man has in its favour is the web swinging. Making your way through the city is a wondrous thing, far more than any Spider-man game before it (yes, that includes Spider-man 2). The developers have managed to create simple but nuanced system for allowing you to swing around, leap and climb with ease. It flows nicely into combat, too, as you come across street gangs and go straight from swinging to webbing up an enemy and hitting them at full force in one seamless action.
Combat feels like a more refined version of the Batman Arkham games, a compliment indeed, with web based moves and close quarters combat seamlessly mixed with stealth attacks. The camera does a good job of keeping up for the most part, though occasional hiccups are expected in a game where you're just as likely to spend half your time upside down or clinging to a wall.
The wealth of side-quests is so good that it's often distracting from completing the main story as you come across another rucksack, drugs deal or bomb chase while swinging towards your goal. Yes, there are also towers, this time in the form of police radios, but the city is pretty much unlocked from the start and they just provide more detail on the side quests available in each region when you find and fix them.
With some great visuals, many of which have already found their way online thanks to the photo mode and Playstation sharing, excellent web-swinging and a great story, there's only one word to describe Spider-man: Amazing.

Amazing!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 November 2018I've taken my time to write a review of Spider-Man. I completed the game a few weeks ago and have been mulling it over since.
I had very high hopes for this game during its build up. Like many, I had great memories of the classic Spider-Man games on the older playstation consoles and really wanted this to live up to that. I was so relieved when it did and then some!
Played on a PS4 Pro through a 4K HDR TV, the game is stunning to look at. The cityscape is breathtaking, particularly at sunset, and swinging your way through it's buildings, parks and skyscrapers is a joy to behold. Frame rate is solid, no noticeable dips on my playthrough, even with a lot going on on-screen.
Gameplay-wise, it does follow most other modern-day 3rd person action games. If you've played Assassin's Creed, any of the Arkham games, Shadow of Mordor or Horizon Zero Dawn - you'll slip straight into it. It combines the elements we've come to expect but does so in an engaging way. At first, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of icons on my mini map, indicating the vast number of collectibles, side quests and other bits and pieces to investigate. However, I never got the same sense of 'chore' that often happens in those situations. I think this is primarily because the game navigation and combat is SO GOOD. I didn't use the fast travel system in the game to get anywhere; swinging around Manhatten and watching Spider-Man effortlessly navigate anything that gets in his way is fantastic to behold. It's fun in of itself. Coupled with a similar combat style to the Arkham games; one based on counters, fluidity, gadgets and finishing moves - nothing felt like busy-work.
Sure some of the random crimes get a little repetitive at times, especially if you're looking to 100% it (it's actually my first platinum trophy and apparently one of the easier games to 100%), but there's enough variance and distraction to keep you going. Each crime has a series of challenges to max your score, for example. All of the collectables add up to allow gadget, gear and suit unlocks - some of which are very cool.
I'm in the midst of Red Dead Redemption 2 at the moment but once I'm done roaming the wild west, I'll be straight back to New York, with the DLC packs in hand :D

Amazing, but not Spectacular
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 October 2018Before I review this game, I should pont out that amazon's courier messed the order up and dropped the game through the letterbox of another house (which isnt even attached to my house). fortunately said resident was kind enough to give me the game at a later date but amazon did nothing to follow up the query I left with them.
So to the game, this is quite possibly the best spider-man game I have every played (and I have played them all since the ps2 game of the original sam raimi film). the combat system felt like a dynamic mix of the arkham games crossed with assassins creed with a hint of ratchet and clank thrown in (not surprising considering Insomniac developed the R&C) franchise). The main storyline felt more fun to go through than all the live action films and most of the cartoon adaptions of spider-man. Like previous insomniac games, the main and supporting cast felt relatable and soundtrack/voicecasting suited the game
So, why hasnt this game gotten 5/5? well there are a few reasosn for this:
1) too many side-missions which felt repetitive
2)for an insomniac game, it is a surprise that a challenge mode wasnt part of the core game and in fact is part of the dlc
3) the story felt too short. - I played the game on spectacular (hardest) difficulty and despite completing all the side quests before the story, it took ~32 hours to complete with platinum trophy (or 8 hours a day over 4 days). There was far more side missions than there was story and if you are a completionist who prefers to finish the extra stuff 1st, then this feels a bit disjointed. without the side-missions, the game can easily be completed within 20 hours on spectacular dificulty with cutscenes.
4) You cannot skip / fast forward cutscenes - something of a hassle for speedrunners but not something I am fussed about
5)whilst satisfactory, the story felt a bit safe (without spoiling too much) and the potential sequel will have to be on top form to surpass this game.
Overall, it is a great game to play but isnt one with a lot of playback value. After you finish playing it once, you have literally nothing to do. My advice is to wait for all the dlcs to be released and then purchase a physical copy that has the dlcs as a part of the game. that way, you have more to do and if your not satisfied, you can always return the game (unlike download copies which void return policies as soon as you play it)

The definitive Spider-Man experience.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2018I have no doubts in calling this the best superhero game I've ever played. Leagues ahead of anything Spider-Man has had before where video games are concerned and taking from and improving upon the best aspects of titles like the Batman Arkham games.
The game looks absolutely stunning and maintains a steady frame-rate throughout no matter how hectic things get, and they get very hectic, very fast on multiple occasions throughout the games lengthy, yet gripping main story, which incorporates an all-star cast of iconic Spider-Man characters both friend and foe and does them all justice, nobody feels like they don't get a moment in the spotlight in this game's story and this is in large part thanks to the superb voice acting across the entire cast.
The game's highly detailed rendition of Manhattan is a blast to explore with the games fast, responsive web-swinging and the collectibles, whilst plentiful, never feel like they slow things down due to how well they compliment the fast-paced nature of Spider-Man's movement.
Combat is where the influence from the Arkham series is at its most abundant, but here it's been made a lot faster and significantly more challenging in places with a variety of web shooters and other gadgets to give players the upper hand in fights against increasingly well-armed enemies who will punish players who are blindly mashing buttons and not paying attention to timing every move so as to avoid being blindsided by a far off enemy training their weapon on Spidey.
As far as I'm concerned this is as close to a perfect Spider-Man game as we have ever gotten and I can't wait to see what Insomniac do with the franchise next.

Gets spider senses tingling! Great game.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 November 2018I bought this to get my kids off Fortnite and it has done the trick.
This is a great game, but maybe not without its little flaws. Although Spider-Man for PS4 does get a lot right: swinging, combat, story, Spidey's personality, etc. there are a few things I found a bit annoying. As an example, the Sinister Six team-up is teased but really only incorporated into maybe 5% of the game - the majority of the story focuses on Mr. Negative, a relatively new character to Spider-Man's rogues gallery. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does feel like there was an opportunity here that was perhaps wasted. The story itself is also fairly predictable, even though it's held together with some really great performances throughout.
There are a lot of busy work tasks to complete like collecting backpacks, landmark tokens, research tokens, pigeons (yes, really) that, while not bad, never feels particularly interesting, either. I also found myself surprised at just how much aerial combat there was, particularly late in the game, when the combat system frankly doesn't support it very well. The last few fights are more annoying than challenging, particularly the final boss, who feels cheap and unwieldy.
There are also occasional stealth segments where you play as someone other than Spider-Man and must sneak past armed enemies. These are usually pretty short and decently-constructed, but every time one popped up I wanted to rush through so I could get back to being Spider-Man already.
Overall I definitely enjoyed my time with it, the photo mode is great, it looks and feels fantastic, I love the optional suits and just how satisfying it is to see them in motion, but it's definitely not without some flaws.
Nevertheless I would recommend this game to others and particularly if you want to get your kids off Fortnite!

One of the best games
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2024Most fun game of played in ages.If you think it is a bit pricey, wait for some days like around christmas or black friday as it fluctuates over time.I got it for an fantastic price of £14.95.This game is non stop entertainemnt and fun that can last a long time. The details and graphics is amazing and gameplay and combat is incredible and rarely get bored. There is puzzles you have to solve and guarentees enjoyment.Only downside is it is time consuming and the levels can be a bit difficult for some people and sometimes there is times you might have to watch a walkthrough to complete. You can choose the difficulty which definetly helps and makes it accesible and playable to wide audiences. If you are a fighting game/superhero.This is. must buy
