Samsung Built a Laptop Screen and Forgot the Laptop.

The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is enormous. There is no elegant way around that. At 14.6 inches, calling it a tablet almost feels misleading; it is closer to carrying around an extremely thin laptop screen that happens to run Android.

And I absolutely understand the appeal.

The first thing you notice is how ridiculously thin it feels for something this large. At just over 5mm thick, picking it up produces that slightly unnerving feeling that something with this much screen should surely have more substance behind it. The aluminium construction feels properly premium, though, with very little flex and a beautifully finished back. It looks and feels every bit like a flagship device.

The size is simultaneously its greatest feature and biggest inconvenience. Sitting at a desk, on the sofa or propped up on a table, that huge 14.6-inch display is fantastic. Holding it one-handed in bed while scrolling through Reddit is less fantastic unless you have wrists developed through years of competitive brick carrying.

For films and streaming, though, it is superb. The AMOLED panel has gorgeous blacks, punchy colours and excellent contrast, and 120Hz makes everything from scrolling through menus to gaming feel incredibly smooth. Watching Netflix, YouTube or Disney+ on this feels much closer to using a small personal television than a normal tablet. The quad speakers are genuinely impressive too, with enough separation and volume that I would happily watch something without reaching for headphones.

It is also surprisingly good outside. The display gets very bright, and although direct sunlight is still the sworn enemy of every glossy screen ever created, visibility is much better than I expected from such a large OLED panel.

Where the screen really earns its keep is productivity. Split-screen multitasking actually makes sense at this size. You can have a browser open beside email, Notes next to a PDF, or a video playing alongside whatever you are supposed to be concentrating on. Smaller tablets technically allow the same thing, but here the apps still have enough physical space to remain useful instead of becoming two cramped phone windows awkwardly sharing custody of a screen.

Samsung DeX pushes that even further - add a keyboard and mouse and the S12 Ultra gets surprisingly close to behaving like a lightweight laptop, with resizable windows and proper multitasking. For emails, documents, browsing, remote working and general office tasks, I could genuinely leave a laptop behind for certain trips.

I would still hesitate to call it a complete laptop replacement, though. The hardware is absolutely capable of it; Android is sometimes the bit that remembers it was invited to a tablet party wearing phone clothes. Some apps scale beautifully across the huge display, while others simply become enormous versions of their mobile interfaces with acres of unused space.

The S Pen being included is a big win - Apple has conditioned everyone to expect the useful pen-shaped accessory to appear as a separate financial event, so finding Samsung's stylus in the box still feels pleasantly civilised.

Writing with it feels excellent - the latency is low enough that handwriting feels natural, and the huge screen turns Samsung Notes into something genuinely useful for meetings, studying, marking up documents or simply scribbling ideas without carrying a notebook. It is also fantastic for drawing and photo editing because there is enough room to work without constantly zooming in and out.

Samsung's Note Assist and Galaxy AI features fit the tablet particularly well. Being able to summarise longer notes, reorganise information or work through documents feels more useful on a productivity device than having AI features awkwardly squeezed into a phone.

Performance is exactly what you would expect from a flagship - apps open quickly, multiple windows remain responsive, games run beautifully and there is very little you can realistically throw at it that makes the tablet feel strained. The upgraded cooling system also matters on something this thin because sustained gaming and creative work generate plenty of heat. In normal use it remains remarkably composed considering there is approximately the thickness of a digestive biscuit between the screen and the table.

The 256GB of storage is decent, although at this price I would have preferred 512GB as the starting point. Thankfully, expandable storage remains available, which is increasingly rare on premium devices and genuinely useful if you store large videos, photographs or offline media.

Battery life is strong, but I would treat Samsung's “up to 23 hours” figure as exactly what it is: an ideal video-playback claim rather than a promise that you can hammer it with gaming, maximum brightness, multitasking and Photoshop for an entire day and still have 60% left by bedtime.

In normal mixed use, the enormous battery gives plenty of confidence - streaming video barely causes anxiety, a normal working day is realistic, and standby drain is well controlled. Push that massive AMOLED screen hard at high brightness and obviously it will fall quicker - physics remains annoyingly undefeated.

The tablet itself is remarkably thin and surprisingly light considering the display size, but 692g is still 692g before you add a case or keyboard. Once dressed for productivity it becomes noticeably more laptop-like in both usefulness and weight.

On a train table or hotel desk, brilliant.. on a cramped flight trying to hold it six inches from your face while the person in front reclines their seat, slightly less brilliant.

The IP68 water and dust resistance is another underrated feature - knowing that an accidental spill does not automatically become an extremely expensive tragedy is reassuring.

The biggest issue is simply whether you actually need something this enormous. If you mostly browse websites, check social media and watch the occasional YouTube video, there are much cheaper and more comfortable tablets. Even Samsung's smaller models will make far more sense for many people.

But if you want the tablet to be a genuine workstation, digital notebook, drawing canvas, secondary monitor and portable cinema, the absurd size becomes the entire reason to buy it.

And that is what I like most about the S12 Ultra. Samsung has not tried to make one sensible tablet for everyone. It has made a completely excessive tablet for the people who know exactly why they want one.

The display is spectacular, the S Pen is excellent, performance is effortless, battery life is strong and the sheer amount of usable screen changes what you can realistically do on a tablet.

It is far too big to be a casual little tablet.

It is also far too good to care.
