Critic Reviews for Beastars Season 1
All Critics (18) | Top Critics (0) | Fresh (17) | Rotten (1)
If I'm right, and BEASTARS really does represent a next step in the future of anime, then the future is looking mighty bright indeed.
Even if it doesn't offer answers, it does offer an engaging story, snappy writing, and technical excellence. Legoshi, Haru, and Louis are all fantastic characters with rich inner lives suited to the complicated world they live in.
Beastars works because of its intrigue; it begs to be a raw anime rather than hide behind metaphors and themes. The Netflix anime series is what it is.
All three of our leads are endlessly compelling, and where you might expect the show to dip into trite heteronormative love triangle tropes, they rise above again and again.
It certainly has an audience built-in from the concept alone, but for the non-furries, Beastars has the benefit of being an actually interesting character drama, with solid conflict, and an interesting world.
As a murder-mystery, this first season is thrilling, as a world-building exercise it's fascinating, and as a high-school drama with an unusual romance at the middle of it, it's already a strong contender for best anime of the year.
But Beastars portrays its mature themes with a certain class and sophistication. ... It's a serious show about a plethora of topics, handled with sensitivity and complexity.
"Beastars" is one of the most impressive anime we have seen during the latest years, as it highlights its contextual and technical prowess in the most eloquent way.
Beastars maintains the gorgeous hand-drawn look of anime while adding in some extra flourishes.
Most of it feels thrown at you for shock value.
It was well done and well-conceived and I, for better or for worse, am invested.
I'm constantly amazed at the quality and content of new anime each year, and Beastars excels in both.
