2024 Unity Impact Report

Letter from CEO

2024 has been a transformative year for Unity. We made meaningful progress towards deepening our partnership with customers, accelerating product innovation, and laying the foundation for a stronger, more focused company. Through it all, we stayed anchored in the principles of strong governance, responsible practices, and our commitment to make a positive impact on the communities we serve and the world around us.

Matt Bromberg

Here’s a snapshot of our impact in 2024:

Social responsibility

Through our Unity for Humanity program, we awarded $500,000 in grants to creators using real-time 3D to drive change, selected from nearly 500 project submissions. Projects tackled everything from ocean conservation to inclusive education and access to healthcare. Grantees also received technical mentorship to bring their visions to life. The Unity Charitable Fund distributed another $3.5 million to support education, training, and other high-impact initiatives around the world. The same spirit of service is alive inside Unity. In 2024, our employees logged over 3,800 volunteer hours to support causes worldwide through our Employee Giving Program. We supported them with donation matching, paid time off for volunteering, initiatives like our Global Caregivers program. We also continued investing in fair and transparent pay practices, holding over 7,700 performance conversations.

Environmental impact

We funded over $1.5 million in climate action, including carbon offsets and allowances, and helped beta test a new carbon accounting tool for game studios. We improved emissions intensity, extended hardware life through refurbishment and donation, and paused our Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) target submission to make sure our data meets the highest standards.

Sustainability is also shaping how we operate — from green building choices to global e-waste recycling and Earth Month campaigns. In 2024 alone, we repurposed 1,400+ laptops, diverted thousands of pounds of waste from landfills, and advanced policies that embed sustainability into how we build and buy. We partnered with Playing for the Planet and Carbon Trust to launch a carbon accounting tool for game studios and were also proud to be named Climate Vault’s 2024 Overall Carbon Champion.

Responsible governance

Underneath it all, strong governance remains a cornerstone of how we operate. In 2024, we launched an Impact Steering Committee to help guide our environmental, social, and governance efforts. We expanded our privacy and security commitments with rigorous global policies, rolled out our first Privacy Report to increase transparency, and introduced a Security Policy aligned with international standards. We also introduced Guiding Principles on AI to ensure our development practices remain responsible in this rapidly evolving space.

We’re proud of the progress made—and clear-eyed about the work ahead. We’ll keep doing the right thing, the right way as we build a more focused, resilient, and responsible Unity.

Thank you,

Matt Signature

Environmental Sustainability

In 2024, Unity continued advancing initiatives to address climate change, amplify environmental impact, and support ecosystems and communities. Collaborating with Playing for the Planet and Carbon Trust, we contributed to the beta testing of a carbon accounting tool designed specifically for game studios. With full launch targeted for 2025, we aim to provide studios with accessible methods to track and manage emissions effectively.

We postponed submitting SBTi near-term targets until 2025 to ensure data accuracy, backed by a third-party pre-assurance review of our 2023 emissions.

Earth Month

During Earth Month in 2024, we underlined our support for preserving the Amazon rainforest - a critical ecosystem vital to the planet's biodiversity, oxygen production, and carbon absorption. Through a double-matching initiative, 27 Unity employees collectively raised approximately $4,000, with funds directed to tree-planting efforts and support for the Amazon Conservation Association.

Unity employees also participated in a variety of sustainability-themed activities, including carbon footprint calculations, sustainability quizzes tied to donations, and volunteering in local events. These volunteering efforts ranged from park cleanups in San Francisco to forest conservation in Helsinki and food redistribution initiatives with Leket Israel in Tel Aviv. Additionally, our global offices hosted clothing swaps to promote sustainable consumption and reduce waste. These initiatives reflect Unity’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship while mobilizing our global workforce to drive meaningful impact.

Unity Workplace Experience Policies

1. Sustainable Design and Fit-Out Guidelines

Our workplace design integrates sustainability at every stage. Key elements include:

  • Installing low-flow plumbing fixtures and water refilling stations to minimize water usage and reduce reliance on disposables
  • Maximizing natural daylight by positioning desk neighborhoods and collaboration areas near windows while configuring meeting rooms further inboard.
  • Utilizing LED lighting and advanced lighting controls, such as timers and occupancy sensors.
  • Implementing of dynamic HVAC controls to enhance energy efficiency
  • Specifying high-effidiency appliances and equipment, such as EnergyStar rated devices.
  • Reusing furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FFE) from existing Unity offices and prioritizing materials that are recyclable or contain recycled content where possible.
  • Centralizing waste stations (as opposed to personal waste bins) and providing clear signage to encourage correct recycling and composting behaviors.
  • Employing smart plug load management, including the use of smart power strips.

2. Office selection criteria in consideration of sustainability

When selecting new office spaces, Unity evaluates buildings based on criteria such as:

  • Energy Efficiency: Preference is given to offices with high building performance accreditions (e.g., LEED, BREEAM, or ENERGY STAR) and features like renewable energy availability and energy-efficient lighting, heating and cooling.
  • Access to Public Transit & Active Commuting: Facilities with excellent access to public transit, bike lanes, and pedestrian pathways are prioritized to reduce car dependency and emissions.
  • Sustainable Building Materials: Preference is given to buildings constructed with sustainable materials such as low-VOC paints, materials with recycled content, and FSC-certified wood.
  • Water Conservation Features: Buildings with low-flow fixtures, water efficient landscaping, and greywater reuse systems are selected to minimize water consumption.
  • Waste Reduction Infrastructure: Offices that support recycling, composting, and encourage zero-waste practices are prioritized.

Materials Circularity

Electronic Waste

Unity remains committed to sustainable IT practices, focusing on the reuse and recycling of electronic equipment. Through our partnership with Revivin, an ISO 9001, 45001, and 14001 certified specialist in IT Asset Disposition (ITAD), we ensure responsible management of end-of-life IT equipment across our regions. Guided by our internal How Unity Handles End-of-Life IT Equipment policy, we follow structured processes that include:

  1. Secure Data Destruction: Ensuring sensitive data is erased before recycling or donation.
  2. Donation Priority: Reallocating usable laptops and IT hardware to nonprofits whenever possible.
  3. Reuse and Resale: Maximizing the lifecycle of our equipment.
  4. Responsible Recycling: Minimizing waste sent to landfills by partnering with certified recyclers.

By focusing on materials circularity, Unity reduces its environmental impact while promoting safe and sustainable disposal practices for electronic waste.

Office Waste Management

Unity’s offices actively work to minimize how much hazardous and non-hazardous waste we generate. While hazardous waste continued to be negligible across our global sites in 2024, initiatives to limit non-hazardous waste were a key focus. These included efforts to expand waste tracking and monitoring to improve Unity’s global waste diversion rates across all office locations.

Workplace Experience Policies to Promote Recycling and Reduce Food Waste

  • Most Unity offices provide dedicated waste streams for general waste, recycling, and compost.
  • Catering vendors are required to adjust food quantities based on employee attendance to reduce waste.
  • Leftover food from meal programs is offered to employees for personal use to prevent excess discard.
  • Unity discourages single-use cutlery and dishware, encouraging reusable alternatives across offices.

Waste Management Policy Overview:

Unity’s Waste Management Recommended Practice establishes a framework for the correct handling, storage, and disposal of waste materials. The policy includes:

  • Guidance on managing various waste types, including batteries, biomedical waste, cardboard, electronics, food waste, and plastics.
  • Procedures to ensure hazardous waste (e.g. fluorescent lights, used oil) is correctly classified, stored, and disposed at Unity sites.

By embedding sustainability into our workplace operations and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, Unity ensures that our offices remain spaces of collaboration, inspiration, and sustainable practices.

People

Our Workforce

At Unity, our workforce reflects a globally distributed team dedicated to innovation and excellence. Employees operate in diverse geographies, with significant operations in countries such as the United States, Israel, Canada, and the United Kingdom, among others.

Unity Interview Process Overview

At Unity, we use a globally standardized and structured interview process designed to provide a fair and equitable experience for all candidates while efficiently assessing technical and behavioral competencies aligned with company values and role requirements.

Interview Stages

  1. Recruiter Phone Screen: A 30-minute initial conversation led by Unity’s Recruitment team, providing mutual introductions and addressing candidate questions.
  2. Hiring Manager Review/Screen: A review of the candidate’s profile followed by a 30-60 minute phone or video interview exploring relevant experience, behavioural traits, and role-specific skills.
  3. Skills Assessment: Candidates who pass the hiring manager screen proceed to a tailored assessment, evaluating both technical skills and transferable competencies such as writing and communications.
  4. Onsite Meeting: Successful candidates meet with Unity team members, virtually or in person, for deeper technical evaluations as well as alignment with Unity’s culture.

Interview Methodology

Unity uses structured interviews for every role, ensuring that all candidates go through the same process and answer the same questions. These approaches facilitate consistent comparisons and help reduce potential bias. To enhance transparency, applicants are directed to a dedicated blog page and careers site that clearly outlines interview stages and expectations.

Reporting Concerns

Unity encourages reporting of potential misconduct, policy violations, or concerns through multiple channels:

  • To a manager
  • To an Human Resource Business Partner (HRBP)
  • To the Employee Relations or Corporate Compliance Teams
  • Anonymously through our EthicsPoint hotline.

All reports are investigated by the Employee Relations or Corporate Compliance Team, and Unity enforces its Anti-Retaliation Policy outlined in the Code of Conduct to protect reporters, witnesses, and the subject of the investigation throughout the process.

Pay Equity

Unity is dedicated to building an equitable workplace, which includes compensating our employees fairly and competitively. Starting in 2023, we have conducted an annual pay equity review as part of our compensation cycle, ensuring employees performing similar roles receive equal pay based on merit, irrespective of gender, race, or ethnicity.

We also transparently disclose our annual UK Gender Pay Gap Report, in compliance with UK regulatory requirements for organizations with over 250 employees.

Engaging our Supply Chain

At Unity, we remain committed to responsible business practices, which extend to fostering sustainability and responsibility within our supply chain. In 2024, we intensified our efforts to evaluate and engage vendors on their adherence to Corporate Sustainability principles, ensuring our partnerships align with our missions and values.

Supply Chain Vendor Evaluation & Training Efforts

Unity assessed vendors based on their current Corporate Sustainability adoption and their plans to implement these policies within the next 24 months. Suppliers who demonstrated no intention to adopt sustainability policies received advisories from us, encouraging alignment with best practices. While we prioritize partnerships with suppliers committed to these principles, we acknowledge the complexity of business decisions and continue to provide business units with advisory recommendations to proceed cautiously.

In March 2024, Unity invited a select group of our largest suppliers to participate in the Business Council on Climate Change (BC3) Supply Chain Webinar. This event aimed to educate and inspire suppliers to adopt more sustainable practices while reinforcing Unity’s commitment to building a more responsible and sustainable supply chain.

Integration of Sustainability in Our Contractual Agreements

In 2024, sustainability considerations were added to our contractual agreements. Unity's Master Services Agreement (MSA) now includes a Sustainability clause that suppliers are required to uphold without modification during contract finalization. This clause emphasizes the supplier’s role in supporting our climate change targets. While Unity cannot enforce this clause when signing supplier-generated contracts, we encourage its inclusion in all agreements moving forward.

Unity also incorporated sustainability guidelines within its Global Source-to-Pay Policy, providing resources and linking suppliers to Unity’s Supplier Environmental Statement and Environmental Sustainability Policy. Business units are trained to prioritize sustainable suppliers when making purchasing decisions. While Unity does not currently block purchases from suppliers lacking sustainability commitments, we strongly advocate for supporting partners investing in sustainability.

Governance

Board & ESG Oversight

The role of our Board of Directors (Board) is to provide oversight and strategic guidance to senior management. More specifically, the Board has responsibilities to review, approve, and monitor fundamental financial and business strategies; assess our major risks; consider ways to address those risks; select and oversee management; and establish and oversee processes to maintain our integrity. Our Senior Director of Inclusion and Social Impact reports to our Chief People Officer and has oversight over our ESG efforts.

In 2024 our Board had thirteen members. Our Corporate Governance Guidelines provide that our Board will consist of a majority of independent directors in accordance with applicable NYSE listing standards. Our Corporate Governance Guidelines define an “independent” director consistent with the NYSE definition of independence. Under our Corporate Governance Guidelines and NYSE listing standards, a director is not independent unless the Board affirmatively determines that such director does not have a direct or indirect material relationship with the Company or any of its subsidiaries. Members of the Audit Committee and Human Capital and Compensation Committee are subject to the additional independence requirements of applicable SEC rules and NYSE listing standards. Our Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee undertook its annual review of director independence and made a recommendation to our Board regarding director independence. As a result of this review, our Board affirmatively determined that 9 of the 13 directors were independent in 2024. 11 of the 13 directors were non-executive members as of the year end 2024. Please refer to our annual proxy statement as filed with the SEC for more information about our board structure, composition and oversight.

Responsible Business & Policies

Conducting our business honestly, fairly, and lawfully is critical to living up to our mission and values. Accordingly, we comply with the corporate governance requirements of applicable law, as well as the governance standards of the New York Stock Exchange. In addition, we maintain and follow the principles of our Corporate Governance Guidelines and our Global Code of Conduct and Ethics.

Our Global Code of Conduct and Ethics applies to all employees, members of the Board of Directors, and all other Unity team members globally. It is a set of detailed rules, but it is also a guide to living our values and a resource for understanding what is expected and how to conduct business in an ethical manner. The Code is available in eleven languages, and is available (along with all Company policies) to employees via our Intranet. Further, all employees receive training on the Code at onboarding and on an annual basis, and are asked to commit to the Code at onboarding and on an annual basis. Employees are also reminded about compliance with the Code in their employment contracts.

All Unity employees must also abide by our Anti-Corruption Policy to ensure compliance with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the U.K. Bribery Act 2010, and all other applicable anti-corruption laws. Measures taken to ensure compliance with the Anti-Corruption Policy include due diligence on key third-party partners and completion of quarterly compliance certifications by senior executives, sales, and other customer-facing personnel. Further, all Unity personnel receive training on anti-corruption compliance as part of Unity’s required annual Code of Conduct training, and additional specialized training is provided annually to employees in sales roles and other relevant functional areas.

Our Export Control and Economic Sanctions Policy governs the use of our products, services, software, and technical data (both physical transfers and transfers completed using electronic means) to ensure compliance with export control and economic sanctions laws and regulations of all relevant jurisdictions, including but not limited to rules administered by the U.S. Commerce and Treasury Departments and the European Union.

Our Whistleblower Policy (along with our Code of Conduct) requires employees to report any misconduct, policy violation, or area of concern, and provides a process for doing so (including a whistleblower hotline managed by an independent third party).

Our Finance department also maintains our Global Gifts, Travel, and Entertainment Policy to provide employees with guidance on how to maintain transparent, accurate, and complete documentation.

All Unity personnel must also comply with our Anti-Harassment Policy. We do not tolerate harassment of, or discrimination against, any employee, applicant, or contractor because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity and/or expression, genetic predisposition or carrier status, ancestry, age, physical or mental disability, medical condition, marital status, parental status, registered domestic partnership status, military or veteran status, sexual orientation, citizenship status, victim of domestic violence status, or any other status protected by applicable laws. The policy provides a mechanism for reporting any concerns or policy violations, and Unity personnel receive annual training on the policy.

Unity conducts a review of all corporate compliance policies on an annual basis, including the Code of Conduct, to make any updates needed to further enhance employee understanding of the policies, and reflect best practices and any changes to the regulatory landscape. The company also conducts audits of a general nature on corporate governance.

Human Rights

Unity is committed to the highest standards of business conduct. This commitment underpins everything we do, including our approach to human rights. Unity has a zero-tolerance approach to any form of human trafficking or modern slavery, and adheres to all laws regarding working hours, minimum wage, age eligibility, and benefits provisions in all countries that we operate in. Additionally, Unity has a Partner Code of Conduct in place, which among other things, requires partners to adhere to certain ethical standards and employment practices, including practices relating to wages, hours, overtime and benefits, and health and safety. Unity also requires contractual commitments to the Partner Code of Conduct.

Data Ethics, Privacy, and AI

Unity is committed to creating positive and meaningful impacts through responsible data, privacy, and AI practices. To this end, we have implemented initiatives and processes with the primary goal of delivering tangible benefits to consumers and end-users, including but not limited to:

  • Consumer data control and transparency, such as user-friendly privacy settings, plain-language policies, and transparency in AI
  • Commitment to privacy and security by design principles
  • Ongoing education and awareness programs
  • Dedicated support and feedback mechanisms
  • Periodic internal monitoring and audits

Privacy and Data Protection

Unity is deeply committed to its privacy and security programs, and we devote considerable efforts to regularly testing the security of user assets utilized by our services and developing easy-to-use features that content creators can leverage to enhance the privacy protections of their creative products. This allows us to protect our community and support them as they positively impact the world.

Our Privacy Policies govern our information practices for all of our products and services, including how we collect, use, share, and protect information collected from developers, players, ad recipients, or people browsing or using our sites, in order to protect our community. We employ a variety of measures to safeguard the collection, transmission, and storage of the information we collect. These measures vary based on the sensitivity of the information that we collect, process, and store, and the current state of technology.

We have established and issued Unity Privacy Standards to our employees and stakeholders to support compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, Unity requirements, and industry best practices, and evaluate our third parties to ensure that our Privacy Standards are upheld throughout our supply chain. All Unity personnel receive annual privacy training, with additional targeted training for key participants in our privacy program. We also have procedures in place to deal with any suspected personal data breach, and notify any user and any applicable regulator of a breach where we are legally required to do so.

These processes are governed by our Unity Global Privacy Program, developed and implemented by the Global Privacy team, Data Governance Council Members, and Operations Management, overseen by the Executive Data Steering Committee and the Audit Committee for the Board, and will continue to be evaluated and refined.

Unity is also dedicated to fostering trust and accountability by prioritizing transparency in how we manage and protect user data. As part of our commitment, the Unity Privacy Report highlights key metrics, including the number of privacy-related requests received from consumers and end users. This report is generated in accordance with our obligations under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and is updated annually to reflect our ongoing commitment to empowering individuals with control over their personal information. Please refer to the report itself for the specific date range of the data presented as well as other important key details.

Additionally, we continue to review and assess our AI Ethics obligations with the aim of meeting evolving global legal requirements relating to artificial intelligence. This programmatic approach allows us to live up to our Guiding Principles on AI. The program is driven by our legal product and privacy groups, both of which are already dedicated to protecting privacy rights through data use analysis and controls.

Lastly, in line with emerging global regulatory frameworks, Unity continues to strengthen our compliance with the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) and the UK’s Online Safety Act (OSA). This includes ongoing investments in content moderation, transparency, and risk mitigation processes that address systemic harms, illegal content, and threats to user safety. To that end, we have implemented our Unity Services Content Transparency policies that set out what content is and isn’t allowed to be provided by a user of Unity Services.

Making Unity and its Customers More Secure

The security of our customer and employee data is of paramount importance to us at Unity. The mission of Unity Security is to enable customers, employees, and the company to protect our data from intended and unintended security risks.

To accomplish this mission, we’ve implemented an approach to our security program that complies with the industry-standard National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework (CSF).

The Unity Security Policy outlines mandatory security requirements for all of Unity. This policy is supported by standards, directives, and procedures.

Our security program includes implementation of software security development life cycle (SSDLC), vulnerability, and configuration management across infrastructure, products, and services. This approach assists us with the identification and management of attacks and compromises, allowing us to carry out our duties to protect our data with urgency and care.

Unity also has programs that oversee physical security management that protects the people, workplaces, assets, and products of Unity from intentional and unintentional physical harm, as well as employee environmental health and safety (EHS) management that ensures safe spaces for our employees and guests. We perform security due diligence in our supply chain and provide security training to employees and contractors to ensure everyone understands their responsibility and acts accordingly.

Our program is driven by a risk-management process that includes education and annual solicitation of risks from across the company, which are then prioritized for remediation. Quarterly governance management is completed for all stakeholders to ensure transparency, and we will continue to refine and improve our security program as we progress.

These commitments to corporate governance and data privacy and security will evolve as we grow, continuing to guide our decision-making and ensuring that we protect our communities while maintaining the highest levels of business responsibility in our operations.
