Standards are often seen as process-heavy and boring. We see them as the foundation of a safe, high-performing and responsible business. I’m incredibly grateful (and genuinely proud) to have received the BSI Standards Users Leadership Impact Award at the BSI Membership 2026 conference last week. I’ve always been passionate about structure and governance - because they create the foundations for doing the right thing, the right way, every time. Add ISO standards into the mix, and it becomes more than structure - it becomes a blueprint for high-performing, responsible business. Since joining Kier Infrastructure in 2018, I’ve championed a standards-led approach to leadership and culture. One that brings together governance, assurance and delivery into a practical, integrated system - not sitting on the side, but guiding everyday behaviours and decisions. Today, that approach supports over 6,000 people, shaping how we work internally and how we collaborate with clients, supply chain partners and wider stakeholders across the UK. As Executive Sponsor for Quality and Assurance, I actively champion standards every day - ensuring they are lived, not just documented. Together, we’ve embedded ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 19650 and 44001 into a single, connected way of working. Not as compliance - but as a driver of: - Performance you can rely on - Assurance you can trust - Collaboration that delivers more together And critically - quality underpins safety. When standards are embedded well, they don’t just improve process - they create safer environments, better decisions and more consistent outcomes. This award means a great deal to me 😍. But what makes me even prouder is the team behind it 🫶. Our Safety, Health, Environment and Assurance leads - across both our corporate teams and our projects - are the ones who make this real. Turning principles into behaviours. Turning standards into outcomes. I may sponsor and advocate - but the team make it real. Every day. On every project.
