Carlo Ratti reposted thisCarlo Ratti reposted thisThe family is changing. So is the home. Today, La Repubblica published an op-ed by Carlo Ratti exploring the ideas behind The Polyamorous Home, the special issue of Interni magazine guest edited by Carlo this month. The article argues that the traditional household is giving way to a more complex ecology of coexistence. Animals, machines, plants, microbes, and increasingly intelligent technologies are becoming part of everyday domestic life. As the cast of inhabitants expands, architecture must adapt. The home is no longer a static container for human activity. It is becoming a living ecosystem, shaped by new relationships between human and non-human actors alike. Under the direction of Gilda Bojardi, Interni has long explored how design and architecture respond to societal change. The Polyamorous Home extends that conversation into the domestic transformations unfolding today. Leggi l’articolo completo qui sotto:

Carlo Ratti reposted thisCarlo Ratti reposted thisTurin’s former RAI tower is moving into its next chapter. As reported by La Stampa, remediation works at Palazzo Micca are expected to begin this year, bringing new life to one of the city’s best known post-war buildings. Developed by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati in collaboration with IPI, the project opens the building back to the city through a new public arcade at street level and an elevated plaza overlooking Turin and the Alps. Originally designed by Aldo Morbelli and Domenico Morelli between 1962 and 1968, Palazzo Micca was Italy’s first steel skyscraper. The proposal keeps much of the existing structure in place while converting sections of the tower for housing and opening new areas of the building to the public.

His talk, “The Future of Public Space: Refinding the Plaza,” explored how cities are changing as we move through them faster, linger less, and increasingly experience urban life through digital layers. AI gives us new tools to study these dynamics, but also new possibilities to redesign the public realm itself. Thanks to everyone involved for the conversations and exchange across the summit. #CityLabMadrid Images courtesy of Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Passive House in the UK: Looking Back to Look Forward Source: UCL (Henrietta Lynch, PhD Thesis) https://lnkd.in/eiaztgZJ “A Critical Examination of the Role of Policy for Retrofit of Existing Housing Stock to Achieve the UK’s Carbon Targets” As the UK moves toward net-zero goals, much of the focus falls on energy retrofit. But embedded within this policy discussion is a bigger architectural question: How early did we know what “low energy” housing could truly look like? This thesis offers both policy insight and a subtle reminder long before standards like Passivhaus became mainstream, there were examples in the UK quietly exploring deep insulation, thermal continuity, and whole envelope design. By designing for performance, not just appearance, we can create buildings that are more responsive, responsible, and resilient. This week on our series on Designing Therapeutic Environments, we are honored to feature the work of Joar Nango, an Indigenous Sámi artist and architect. In Chapter 14, Joar introduces "Girjegumpi", a mobile library project that serves as a powerful critique of Western-centric architectural paradigms. By integrating traditional Sámi building practices and Indigenous worldviews, Joar demonstrates how the built environment can become a space for resistance, healing, and the affirmation of identity. For practitioners in #Architecture and #LandscapeArchitecture, this chapter is a call to embrace "contextual building", a process that respects the flow of materiality, uses salvaged materials, and celebrates Indigenous spatial knowledge. 🔗 Explore the Girjegumpi project: https://lnkd.in/gkchP6JS #SamiArchitecture #IndigenousDesign #ArchitectureResistance #IFLA #CulturalIdentity #SpatialJustice #SustainableDesign #DesigningTherapeuticEnvironments

Urban Development Zones (UDZs) The Government’s formal introduction of UDZs is an encouraging step forward in delivering housing, infrastructure and regeneration AT SCALE. Informed by the experiences (both positive and lessons learned) of the SDZ model, UDZs could provide a real, workable framework: >>Fast-track planning once schemes are fully in place (no appeals) - makes sense given the process they’ll have gone through. >>Public infrastructure aligned from the outset - absolutely crucial. >>Stronger certainty for developers, funders and also for the existing communities locally - a plan-led model. >>Masterplan-led, with real commercial flexibility - this is NOT planning by market forces, but a practical and flexible approach to allow for evolution. As urban planners, are we on the cusp now of an impactful tool that bridges planning ambition with delivery reality?? Especially on complex brownfield and multi-owner sites, this seems like a strong opportunity! Let’s get real on viability, phasing, and implementation, and bring forward strategic sites for Candidate UDZ designation URGENTLY. The start of a key process is underway… Official announcement can be read here: https://lnkd.in/e824cqvr KPMG Future Analytics | KPMG Ireland | KPMG #UrbanPlanning #UDZ #Housing #Infrastructure #Masterplanning #PlanningReform

I was pleased to connect online in the FIAE (Females in Architectural Education) Forum this week, joining colleagues from across the UK and beyond to discuss gender equity in architectural education. One of the key reflections I’m taking away is how quickly women come together to drive change when needed. This is a fantastic initiative led by Victoria Farrow and Kelly Mackinnon, currently supported by all the architectural schools in the UK (and some abroad). The forum brought together over 60 schools to share insights, experiences and emerging data - marking an important step in establishing an initial sector-wide baseline and shaping future action for our students and the next generation of architects. #FIAE #ArchitecturalEducation #GenderEquity

Dear All, I’m delighted to have contributed and being part o the co-authors to the latest #HomesEngland guidance on Car Parking — Parking: What Works Where (Second Edition). This important publication builds on earlier work to explore how parking can be better designed and integrated within residential developments, moving beyond simply accommodating cars to enhancing the quality of places we create. It brings together updated strategies, practical insights, and case studies to support more thoughtful, context-sensitive approaches to parking design. The guidance reinforces a crucial message: parking is not just a technical requirement, but a key element in shaping liveable, safe, and sustainable neighbourhoods. By carefully balancing convenience, safety, and design quality, we can create environments that support communities and improve everyday experiences. I’m proud to have collaborated with colleagues and partners on this work and in particular #HomesEngland Sustainability and Design Team, Proctor & Matthews Architects , Georgina Bignold & David Birkbeck , and to contribute to an evolving conversation about Parking, Density, Local living, #20minuteneighbourhoods, design quality, and the future of our built environment. “This timely document is a must-read for everyone engaged in residential development and housing design, offering valuable insights for shaping better places.” You can explore the guidance here: https://lnkd.in/eCi445np #Parking #Placemaking #UrbanDesign #Urbanplanning #Architecture #Housing #HomesEngland #SustainableDevelopment #Planning #Design #20minuteneighbourhoods Amy Burbidge Elizabeth Redbourne Georgina Bignold David Birkbeck Andrew Matthews Stephen Proctor RTPI International Royal Town Planning Institute RTPI Scotland RTPI Cymru RTPI Northern Ireland University of Dundee ISOCARP - International Society of City and Regional Planners The Academy of Urbanism (AoU) Urban Land Institute Urban Design Learning Design Council Urban Design Group RIBA RIBA Europe The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland Landscape Institute Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) PlacemakingX Placemaking Europe Architecture and Design Scotland (A&DS) The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) RICS UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) World Economic Forum World Health Organization Planning, Architecture and Regeneration Urban ReLeaf UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) Scottish Futures Trust Carlos Moreno Gehl - Making Cities for People

Thanks to Benjamin Friedman for pointing out this benchmark, and to Theodore Galanos and Nathan Miller for their thought-provoking posts. This article is a must read for anyone dealing with AI for interpreting architectural diagrams. “This isn't just inaccuracy; it's hallucination at a scale that makes the output unusable without complete human verification” It has been said before: In Architecture, pixels are not enough.
