  • Earlier this year, the Under2 Coalition hosted the first in-person #NextGenerationBudgets workshop in Brussels — bringing together climate and finance officials from 11 subnational governments.   With public budgets playing a critical role in driving climate action, this initiative helps states and regions strengthen their capacity in green budgeting through technical training, peer learning, and community-building.   Hear directly from participants on how the event fostered collaboration and supported the co-creation of principles for subnational green budgeting.

In March, we hosted our first in-person #NextGenerationBudgets event in Brussels, bringing together climate and finance officials from eleven #Under2Coalition states and regions. With the budget cycle central to how organisations implement climate commitments, building expertise in green budgeting is essential—especially at the subnational level. Through the Next Generation Budgets project, states and regions receive technical training, join a community of practice, and explore ways to unlock climate finance for their territories. Hear from participants on how the workshop fostered collaboration, peer learning, and the co-creation of principles for subnational green budgeting. Thank you to the government of North Rhine-Westphalia for its leadership; our funder, Stiftung Mercator GmbH, for its generous support; our technical partners, Expertisefrance and the I4CE - Institut de l'économie pour le climat / Institute for Climate Economics; and all participating governments.

Out now: 🚨A new report from #SteelZero, The Institution of Structural Engineers and BCSA - British Constructional Steelwork Association answers the key question: What's the role of scrap in steel decarbonisation? To a packed audience at the Institution of Structural Engineers, our Senior Manager for SteelZero Sameen Khan presented the key findings alongside fellow authors Will Arnold, IStructE, and Michael Sansom, BCSA at the Institution of Structural Engineers. The report recognises steel scrap is important for steel decarbonisation. But we can't recycle our way to net zero. It's a globally limited material which will only meet roughly half of steel demand by 2050.   We need a "dual decarbonisation" approach: decarbonising scrap-based steelmaking and the new iron-based steelmaking which will be needed to meet the rest of our steel needs. We call for policymakers to drive global steel decarbonisation by: ⭕ Investing in low emission iron and green hydrogen for primary steelmaking, and clean electricity and scrap processing for secondary steelmaking ⭕ Prioritise policies for efficient use and reuse of steel ⭕ Put in place emissions reporting mechanisms that can be easily adopted by industry that reflect global scrap limits   We also recommend designers and specifiers to: ⭕Minimise steel use through material efficiency and circular economy ⭕Agree a steel procurement and design approach with clients that reduces both global emissions and project emissions ⭕Use steel from producers aligned with dual decarbonisation commitments Check out the full report now: https://ow.ly/L0SY50VLgt2

  • What does a truly responsible energy transition look like? At the Responsible Renewable Energy Summit 2025, our India Executive Director Divya Sharma (PhD) laid out a powerful vision for a future where renewable energy isn’t just clean, but also equitable, inclusive, and people-first. She spoke of: ⭕ Why responsible energy means ensuring no one is left behind. It’s about co-benefits, not trade-offs. ⭕ The shift to renewables must create new jobs, protect land and communities, and deliver economic, social, and environmental value. ⭕ Partnerships are key - between communities and developers, corporates and governments, and through international cooperation. • Join us for a special LinkedIn Live session "How should we communicate climate change in 2025" as part of the US Climate Action Summit in partnership with Impact Communications Institute. Moderated by our Head of North America Communications Adam Lake, we'll explore current trends in climate and communications, bringing together those leading the way in the use of language across brands, in campaigns and through the nonprofit space. We'll ask the questions: What does the data say about how consumers respond to climate messaging through advertising and marketing? Should we shy away, or double down on the use of climate terms? Does good news engage more people than bad? In the modern political context, what language and stories resonate best across the political divide?

Our very own Adam Lake is here with a recap of today's #USLeadersForum. An action-packed day full of collaborative dialogue and dealmaking - focused on Moving US Forward. But what does this actually mean? Throughout the day, our panelists covered the most pressing issues facing US resiliency, adaptation, and risk management. Spotlighting electric vehicles, industry, and clean energy, we discussed how to bridge partisan gaps through effective communication, break down barriers to efficient permitting, and empower subnational actors to create change. We heard from some amazing speakers. See below for some highlights of the action: "[We need] common values, starting where people are. Make these issues nonpartisan. Transcend what divides us, look for what unites us." - Elizabeth Gray, National Audubon Society "Decarbonisation is the greatest opportunity of our lifetime." - Chris Kemper, Palmetto "The way policy is going to work in this space is it has to be smart, responsive and generative." Federation of American Scientists Mother Nature doesn't know who was elected president, this is a mortality issue not just a morality issue." - Ceres Accelerator "Before a bank experiences risk, a family and a community has experienced the risk." - Ivan Frishberg, Amalgamated Bank We drove collaborative action through our Implementation Agenda, as organizations such as Hydro Québec convened state leaders, utilities, trade groups, and regulators to discuss the current and future role of clean energy in the U.S. Northeast. Meanwhile Delivery Associates' Laurel Blatchford t evolving role of state and industry leaders in driving America’s energy security. Thanks to all attendees for joining us and for our staff for making it happen. Let's bring this impact forward to #ClimateWeekNYC, taking place September 21-28, 2025. See you there 🌎

Climate Week NYC US Lead and Head of Communications, Climate Group North America

Thrilled to be back chatting to Serge Abergel from Hydro Québec ahead of the US Leaders’ Forum in DC later today. We spoke about their ambition as an organisation to achieve long-term success through investment. What I particularly loved to hear was how they want to measure their success is simple – does this investment deliver affordable clean-energy to people in the long run? Watch the full interview below – just like our chat ahead of #ClimateWeekNYC last year, it’s full of insights.

Climate Week NYC US Lead and Head of Communications, Climate Group North America

In the run up to the US Leaders’ Forum today, I got to interview Sarah Rose Sarah Rose from National Audubon Society, exploring their vital work on climate leadership and bird conservation.   I learned why climate action is fundamental to Audubon’s mission: their research shows that almost two thirds of North American bird species are at risk of extinction without action.   As an organization who have been great supporters of #ClimateWeekNYC, I particularly enjoyed chatting about the steps people can take even in urban spaces like New York City to help protect biodiversity around them. Check out the vid for all the insights
