*URGENT* We are looking for journalists who write about technology to help us get an important story about new risks to #opendata out. Our senior site reliability engineer, Grant Slater is seeing unprecedented levels of bots attempting to scape #OSM data. For comparison, in recent years, he has seen 1 or a few IPs doing 10,000+ requests, but this week we're seeing 100,0000+ IPs in a coordinated to scrape, each IP doing a few requests. Previously he would temporarily block the 1 or 2 IPs and move on. That's not possible anymore. From Grant's recent post on Mastodon: If you write about the messy reality behind "free" internet services: we're seeing #OpenStreetMap hammered by scrapers hiding behind residential proxy/embedded-SDK networks. We're a volunteer-run service and the costs are real. We'd love to talk to a journalist about what we're seeing + how we're responding. #AI #Bots #Abuse The irony is that OSM data is free to use - these bot attacks are an unnecessary risk to the whole project.

Here are two quick photos of OSM Foundation board members Maurizio Napolitano and Héctor Ochoa Ortiz at FOSS4G-IT / OSMit 2025 at the University of Trento School of Innovation. There, they talked about the history of #OpenStreetMap, gave insight into their membership on the OSM Foundation board, and shared highlights on what the Foundation is currently working on and what are its plans for the future. #foss4G #OSMit #opendata

Hello, #openstreetmap community, here's an opportunity for those of you who have been wanting to get involved on the ops and sys/admin side of OSM. The Operations Working Group (OWG) plans to host a copy of OpenStreetMap Spyglass (formerly OSM X-RAY). The goal is to replace the current data layer on openstreetmap.org. Since this is a self-contained new service, we see it as a chance to bring in new people to help with ops and sysadmin tasks. If you have relevant experience, we’d love your help and ask that you get in touch at operations@osmfoundation.org. We can mentor you on the specifics of our OSM setup, including our chef setup and how we configure things. Technical Details: The service will involve: - an osm2pgsql database, - a go server, - nginx to terminate SSL and proxy the go server, - various shell scripts to tie parts together, - systemd unit files for automation, and anything else you identify as necessary. We have examples of similar components for other services so you’re not starting from a blank slate. This won’t be deployed to the main page until after migration from leaflet to Maplibre is finished, so there’s no time crunch. Interested? Reach out to the OWG today to help build OpenStreetMap!

Hi, #OSM community, there's a new post at the OSM blog: "OpenStreetMap at UN Open Source Week" by Minh Nguyễn, Core Software Development Facilitator. Minh represented OpenStreetMap as part of the Sovereign Tech Agency delegation at the United Nations Open Source Week in New York City. Joining him was Sarah Hoffman, who maintains several well-known OSM software projects. Minh writes, "Among the open source projects represented at the event, OSM stands out as an open data project, giving us a special perspective on issues of governance and community-building. At the unconference-style “Maintain-A-Thon”, Sarah shared some of her deep experience as maintainer of Nominatim in discussing how to create accessible entry points for new contributors. A few steps away, I joined open source maintainers from around the world as we discussed our challenges in internationalizing our projects and communities to serve a more global audience." It was a unique opportunity to raise OSM’s profile among global institutional supporters of open source projects and promote best practices for fostering and sustaining authentic open source communities.z Link to the full blog post with all the details is in the comments. 👇 #opensource #opendata #FOSS4G #GIS
