The scale of our digital world is staggering, and the cost isn’t just financial. Our most recent Tech Flix film, released in August 2025, 'Data’s Untold Story', explores the hidden environmental and organisational cost on our digital lives, especially as data and AI grow at unprecedented rates. One of the messages from the film is that traditional ROI no longer captures the true value of technology. Boards and leaders are increasingly thinking in terms of “return on impact”, weighing both the benefits of AI and digital innovation and the energy, emissions, and societal effects they generate. The film highlights the dual nature of AI, in that while data-heavy AI operations can be power-hungry, innovative approaches are already showing what’s possible. Looking further ahead, advances in quantum computing and even space-based data centres could allow technology to scale while reducing its footprint, if leaders make impact-focused decisions today. The film points out that understanding AI’s potential isn’t enough.
