Liam Stirling began his career as an Apprentice CAD Technician in 2007, achieving an HNC in Civil Engineering with an A grade, before progressing through roles at other consultancies to his current position as a Senior Engineer. In his current role as a Senior Engineer at Fairhurst, he has gained valuable experience, specialist housing development consultants, and a house builder. Each role has broadened his skills, responsibilities, and understanding of different business models. Liam is keen to continue learning, develop a successful team, and grow alongside Fairhurst, helping to strengthen the civils presence in the Elgin office. As he puts it, “One of the best parts of my job is the design aspect. Even after working on a variety of projects, I have yet to come across two sites with exactly the same conditions. I particularly enjoy finding a solution for clients whose options appear to have been exhausted.” Read more on Liam’s story 👉 https://lnkd.in/g_w2BNYj #FairhurstCareers #Fairhurst

Fairhurst has a strong track record in delivering Higher‑Risk Buildings (HRBs) and successfully achieving Gateway approval under the Building Safety Act. Our experience stretches across both new build and refurbishment projects in the residential, healthcare, and student accommodation sectors. This includes Caroline Street, one of the first projects in the UK to achieve Gateway 3 approval, with its approved documentation now used as a benchmark for future submissions. Another example is The Rubik, a complex 12‑storey student accommodation scheme for which Fairhurst provided full civil, geotechnical, and structural design services. Following an extensive submission process with the BSR, the project achieved Gateway 2 approval in December 2025, enabling construction to commence in January 2026. Fairhurst is experienced in navigating the most stringent stages of the gateway regime, setting your development on the route for permission to occupy. 🌿 Fairhurst in Nature has been a wonderful celebration of taking time out to spend time outdoors during Stress Awareness Month. Colleagues from across the UK shared beautiful moments in green and blue spaces from parks and coastlines to mountain tops, with some very cute photos of their furry friends along the way. Below are some of their photos for you to enjoy. Research shows that spending time in nature can significantly improve physical and mental health, with growing evidence of its positive impact on overall quality of life (Health Research Authority). With the 2026 Ground Engineering Awards fast approaching, Fairhurst are proud to showcase the Sheepfolds Subway development in Sunderland which is nearing completion and was recently shortlisted under two prestigious categories including: - UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £1M - £3M, and the Award for Technical Excellence This project, once open to the public, will link the new Keel Crossing to the Stadium of Light. Constructed by Esh Group on behalf of Sunderland City Council the development forms part of wider public realm improvements and includes a pedestrian underpass and a walkway over a historical wagon way associated with the area’s industrial past. The sympathetically designed Tobermore reinforced soil structure at the heart of the development is an innovative alternative to a traditional reinforced concrete bridge structure and has been nationally recognised through shortlisting at the awards. Our Geotechnical services teams in Newcastle and Glasgow helped bring the aspirational regeneration project to life, delivering specialist consultancy services from feasibility stage through to construction, including design and management of the ground investigation works, carrying out slope stability assessments for the approach wing walls and designing the sub-structure for the underpass structure. This offering was further bolstered through provision of multidisciplinary services including Civil and Structural Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Principal Designer and Planning. The scheme demonstrates how collaboration, smart value engineering and technical rigour can elevate a modest-scale project into one of regional significance. We very much look forward to the outcome of the awards in London on 17th June. #Sheepfolds #GroundEngineeringAwards2026 #CivilEngineering #StructuralEngineering #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanDesign #PrincipalDesigner #Planning Ground Engineering Magazine

Fairhurst is delivering multidisciplinary civil, structural, and geo-environmental engineering services for a new 30‑hectare Regional Distribution Centre in Doncaster for TJ Morris, owner of Home Bargains, with involvement dating back to site enabling works in 2021. The nearly 1 million sq. ft. RDC features a vast hybrid steel structure and will house a state-of-the-art automated handling system, requiring complex foundation and slab designs to meet strict settlement tolerances on challenging ground conditions. The integrated approach, combining driven piles, rigid inclusions, ground improvement, transition slabs, and comprehensive external works, has enabled a stable platform and fully serviced logistics facility. We are looking forward to seeing its finished form! Read more about this project here 👇 https://lnkd.in/eUzpdJkn #Fairhurst #structuralengineering #civilengineering

Caroline Street, a 7–8 storey residential development in London, was one of the first projects in the UK to achieve Gateway 3 approval under the new Building Safety Act (BSA) 2022 regulations. The Building Safety Act (BSA) 2022 strengthens building safety across the UK by introducing stricter regulation, oversight, and accountability throughout the entire building lifecycle, particularly for Higher‑Risk Buildings (HRBs). It focuses on fire and structural safety and establishes a new regulatory body to ensure compliance through inspections, audits, and transparent reporting. For new HRBs, compliance is embedded through a three‑stage gateway process: 📝 Planning 🚧 Pre‑construction 🏢 Completion The gateways ensure buildings are properly planned, designed, constructed, and verified to meet robust safety standards, with all stages required to be successfully passed before occupation is permitted. In true Dragon’s Den fashion, Fairhurst entered Edinburgh Napier University’s Integrated Engineering Design (IED) event, with Jay Kidd taking the chair as industry “Dragon,” hosted by Dr Kenneth Leitch. The challenge for the 5th year MEng Civil Engineering students? Design a sustainable 8,500‑capacity arena… no small task! Armed with sharp technical and commercial questions, Jay listened to the presentations and put each team through their paces, testing assumptions, probing viability, and weighing the merits of each scheme. The time came where a verdict had to be made…. the competition was tough but impressive—so impressive that it ended in a dead heat! 🐉 The quality of work was excellent, especially given that the students are balancing this alongside other modules and dissertations. It was fantastic to see how two teams tackled the same brief in completely different, creative ways, proving there’s more than one smart solution in engineering that is worth investing in👏 Well done, all! #Fairhurst #EarlyCareers #CivilEngineering #EdinburghNapierUniversity
