DOF ’s Skandi Amazonas AHTS Runs Aground Off Macaé, Brazil A serious marine incident unfolded on the night of May 15, 2026, involving the anchor-handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel Skandi Amazonas while operating on charter to Petrobras in the Campos Basin area. According to the Brazilian Navy and multiple maritime sources, the 2010-built, 95-meter vessel struck a submerged rock (reportedly near the Santana Archipelago) while underway, causing a significant hull breach. This led to flooding, primarily in the starboard engine room compartment, resulting in the loss of starboard propulsion. To prevent the vessel from sinking or capsizing, “the master made the critical decision to intentionally ground the ship” approximately 200–400 yards (approx. 200 meters) off Praia Campista in Macaé. Macae is one of Brazil’s offshore oil industry key hub for logistics and tourism , lined with beaches and hotels. The vessel came to rest very close to shore, visible from the beach. • 29 people were onboard at the time. • No injuries reported. • 12 crew members were safely evacuated by good Samaritan vessels and support boats from Porto de Imbetiba. • 17 crew remained aboard to assist with damage assessment and stabilization efforts. • The vessel retains emergency generator power. No signs of pollution have been reported so far. Current Status (as of May 19) The vessel remains aground. Local port authorities have launched an investigation, and all parties are cooperating. At this stage, key unknowns include: • Exact cause of the initial contact (navigation, weather, mechanical issue, etc.) • Full extent of internal damage and flooding • Timeline and method for refloating and repairs (likely requiring drydock) • Any potential disruption to nearby offshore operations This incident first gained attention through industry forums (such as gCaptain), social media, and vessel tracking platforms before official statements emerged. DOF has not yet issued a detailed public update on its channels, normal MO for incidents in Brasil. Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the challenges and risks in coastal navigation, even in well-known operational areas like the Brazilian pre-salt region. Quick thinking by the crew appears to have prevented a much worse outcome. #salvage #macae #shipping #accident #runaground 175

  • Second Trimester round up - Valaris Limited gains more work for drillship and multiple jackup rigs. The new awards, including contract extesions, are spread between Brazil, the North Sea and the Far East. Valaris has secured new contracts and contract extensions with a combined value of about $560 million, lifting the company’s total backlog to $4.9 billion. Petrobras has extended the contract for the drillship VALARIS DS-4 by 1,064 days, with extension set to take effect in November 2027. Jackups: * VALARIS 115: two-year contract extension with Brunei Shell Petroleum Co. Sdn. Bhd. Petroleum, starting in April 2027 * VALARIS 106: one well for Medco E&P Indonesia Energi offshore Indonesia. The minimum 45-day program began last month * VALARIS 122: 123-day contract extension with Adura in the UK North Sea, now underway, to provide accommodation support services. The same rig will start a 162-day contract in September with INEOS Energy in the UK North Sea, with options for up to 825 days for work in both the UK and Danish sectors. * VALARIS 123: 123-day contract extension with TAQA in the Dutch North Sea, with accommodation support services underway. * VALARIS 248: 74-day contract extension with GE Vernova in the UK North Sea to provide accommodation support services for an offshore wind project. The company also revealed that completion of planned shipyard projects for the VALARIS 116 and VALARIS 250has been delayed, with bareboat charters for the rigs set to resume now and during the third quarter. Operations for VALARIS 110, under contract to NOC offshore Qatar, have been suspended since early March. The semisubmersible VALARIS DPS-1was sold for recycling in April. (Shaaaame 😔) #energy

  • How to Control a Blowing out Well - 101 DAVID THOMPSON RIP Directly from Mike Shellmans Oily Stuff Blog (link ⬇️) Not enough of you will bother to go to the link so here goes. Mikes words not mine 👊🏻🔱👊🏻 I suspect this was a production well; the rig has been pulled out of the way and everything cleared from around the well, some mates laid down to stay out of the water the well is making. The damaged(?) tubing head was removed, here's how: Ignition chances are low, so hands got into the well head and unbolted the flange with hammer wrenches, most likely, then air powered socket wrench like you hear in the tire change place. To keep from hair lipping everybody before the last two bolts are undone, a large C-clamp with a steel bracket on the back of the clamp is placed on the two flange halves and tightened down. The last two bolts are broken out of the flange-to-flange connection, and everybody backs away a hundred feet or so. A winch line, or chain is hooked into the C-clamp, and a dozer pulls the clamp off, the top flange and tubing head blows up in the flow and lands in the mud. Nobody's hurt. All clear. The B-section or casing head is cleaned up the ring gasket grooves checked. All good. Time to cap the well. This well is not blowing hard enough to have to snub the capping stack down, the stack is heavy enough it will go over the flow, piece of cake. A ring gasket is tacked into the bottom flange of the capping stack, so it won't get blown out. Using a small crane the stack is picked up and under David's directions set to the perfect height. One bolt is put into the flange-to-flange connection so the stack cannot get pushed upward, or downward. It acts as pivot point. Once everything is lined up, Wayne Lansford, on the left, will take his rope and walk around the well head clockwise, spinning the capping stack over the flow. Once the flow is going up thru the stack David will direct the crane operator to lower the stack down to the casing head, the boys will move in and bolt the flange up, tight, the ring gasket in place. The well is capped and back under control. Easy well. Not so easy when the well is blowing hard enough to send the capping stack into outer space, the well is blowing gas and gasoline in the air and ignition chances are high. This can then be like a very dangerous rodeo. Don't try this at home, folks. It's not as easy, or clean, as it looks All hands that work in the oilfield learn 2nd and 4th grade sign language, particularly around high-pressure pumping. It's hard to hear. Around blowing wells it's impossible to hear so after a few years a good hand gets his degree in well control sign language; masters level. It's possible to be around these things all day long and not say a word to each other than using sign, reading facial expressions, reading lips and just knowing what the leadoff man is going to do next, and when. That'd make a good story someday #oilystuff #mikeshellman Catherine Shellman

Another one bites the dust for an easy $10million Valaris Limited DPS-1 (originally Atwood Oceanics Condor, later Ensco DPS-1) was a modern ultra-deepwater dynamically positioned (DP) semisubmersible drilling rig. Valaris sold it for recycling in April 2026 after it had been idle/stacked. Built in 2012 by Jurong Shipyard in Singapore (part of the Friede & Goldman, Ltd. ExD Millennium class). Original owner: Atwood Oceanics (acquired by Ensco in 2017; Ensco later became Valaris). Recent operations: Completed work for Woodside offshore Australia in November 2025, then stacked in Malaysia. Classified as “held for sale” (with intent to recycle) in Q4 2025. Sale: Sold for recycling in April 2026, with reported cash proceeds of about $10.1 million. Valaris recognized some impairment earlier and a small remeasurement gain in Q1 2026. This leaves Valaris with only one remaining semisubmersible, the Valaris MS-1 (also an F&G ExD Millennium, warm-stacked in Malaysia). Valaris has been high-grading its fleet by retiring older or less competitive assets, or Transocean may be thinning down? This fits a broader industry trend of recycling older floaters amid strong demand for newer drillships and high-spec rigs, especially as companies focus on efficiency and backlog growth (Valaris reported ~$4.9 billion backlog in early May 2026). Did you work on her if so let’s have a send off 🔈 #drilling #semisub #oilandgas #oilfield #oil #108
