For Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), our analysts Mike Jones, a senior screen reader user, and Siân Box, a senior Keyboard and Voice Activation user as well as a DAC Ambassador, gave a remote demonstration for the #UKParliamentDigitalService team to show what accessibility looks like in practice. Real people. Real barriers. Real impact when services are built accessibly. A huge thank you to Katy O'Brien and team! #DigitalAccessibility #Accessibility #GAAD

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, more colloquially known GAAD, and it is a vital day in our industry as it serves as a reminder that digital accessibility isn’t just a nice to have feature, it’s something that should be included from the concept stage. Accessibility isn’t something that deserves attention one day a year, and here at the Digital Accessibility Centre we work hard year-round to make websites more accessible. We’ve collected the latest statistics on accessibility and failures that occur commonly into a blog, which can be found at: https://lnkd.in/eeyRM9eW #Accessibility #DigitalAccessibility #GAAD

When it comes to colour contrast, do you know how many websites on average will have an issue that fails under the WCAG criterion? People with colour deficiency, or vision difficulties, may not be able to see a slight change in colour to show where their focus is. To ensure that components are accessible, developers need to meet a colour contrast of at least 3:1. #Accessibility #DigitalAccessibility #GAAD

Transcripts are vital for people with hearing difficulties, as well as people that struggle to follow along with media due to cognitive differences. Providing transcripts, captions, as well as an option for sign language interpretation, ensures that media is accessible to all. #Accessibility #DigitalAccessibility #GAAD

Colour contrast failures remain one of the most frequent WCAG violations online. For users with colour‑vision deficiency or reduced visual acuity, a slight colour change often isn’t enough to show where focus is. To make interactive components perceivable, WCAG requires a minimum contrast ratio of 7:1 for focus indicators. Meeting this standard ensures that focus states are visible for everyone. #Accessibility #DigitalAccessibility #GAAD

A huge thank you to Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) for making the trip to visit us at our office for live demonstrations with our user testing team, last Wednesday. We all thoroughly enjoyed and really appreciated your open mindedness and inquisitiveness for accessibility. #Accessibility #DigitalAccessibility #DVSA

Screen‑reader users can choose to navigate a service via links alone, whether through the use of the Tab key or the links list. Vague link text provides no context when encountered in this manner, so it is important to make sure links and all other elements are labelled accurately and descriptively.
