  • AbilityNet has been named in the Forbes Accessibility 200, a global list of organisations using technology to drive change for disabled people. Our Head of Digital Inclusion Robin Christopherson MBE has reflected on what it means for a UK charity like AbilityNet to be named alongside so many global brands and champions. "As a disabled person who has been at AbilityNet since it was created in 1998, it's a real 'pinch me' moment when a leading business brand like Forbes recognises our work alongside companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, HSBC, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, Sony and Unilever - many of whom we have been supported by and worked closely with in those 28 years. It also celebrates the work of partners and innovators we know well such as Be My Eyes, NaviLens, Signapse, WeWALK, PurpleSpace, Valuable 500 and many more. As well as individuals such as Dr Shani Dhanda who is such a tireless champion for disabled people in the UK. It's a cause for celebration for our 500+ volunteers, and our amazing staff, past and present. But having a brand like Forbes run this list for the second year is also a sign that accessibility is moving beyond compliance to be recognised as a driver of innovation and business value - a shift that is long overdue. At AbilityNet, we see both sides every day. Our network of volunteers working with disabled and older people see the life-changing impact when technology is accessible and easy to use. But they also see the barriers people face when it is not, as well as the wider impact on brands when they fail to meet their customers' needs. This list also reflects a network of connections that illustrate how accessibility continues to be built through collaboration. We're all changing the world by listening to people with lived experience and working together across organisations and sectors to build a digital world that is accessible to all. Our commitment to that sense of community comes through in how many people on the list are part of TechShare Pro. Our annual conference has become a fixture in the calendar and underlines just how much this community matters to all of us. Accessibility still feels like a slog for many people - still chasing the buy-in and support to deliver accessible products and services. We all need allies, and that's why events like TechShare Pro help nourish the community and keep momentum going. I look forward to celebrating with you there." • Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD, 21 May). It’s a good moment to pause and really think about things. Not just whether a website passes a test. But whether accessibility shows up in the day-to-day - how decisions get made, how services are designed, how customers are treated. Because it’s almost never just a “digital team” thing. It’s in the culture. The conversations people are having. The things that get prioritised. And when it’s not there, people notice - even if it’s not always obvious. At AbilityNet, this has been the focus for more than 25 years. Helping organisations move beyond guidelines and understand what accessibility actually looks like in real life. A big part of that is listening. Working alongside people with lived experience of disability, across a wide range of needs, to spot barriers that might otherwise be missed. That’s usually where the most useful learning comes from. If GAAD does one thing, it should be this: get people to ask more honest questions. - What are we doing well? - Where are we making assumptions? - Who might we be unintentionally excluding? If you’re not sure where to start, that’s okay. There’s a lot of free guidance and practical resources to help you build understanding and take those first steps: https://lnkd.in/eqHfUwBR And if you want to go further, there’s support available to help embed accessibility across teams, from culture through to customer experience: https://lnkd.in/e49EhhsU This GAAD, take small, meaningful steps in the right direction. #GAAD2026 #GAAD Alt text: Text: Global Accessibility Awareness Day - a day to reflect

  • This Global Accessibility Awareness Day (Thursday 21 May), we’re asking: how do accessibility issues affect your customers in practice? When accessibility barriers go untested with real users, people can be excluded from essential services, particularly disabled and older people. This increases risk and makes it harder to deliver fair, inclusive experiences. User testing helps you move beyond assumptions, giving direct insight into how people actually experience your services and where barriers exist. See how your services perform for real users. Accessibility user testing provides clear, actionable feedback so you can reduce risk, remove barriers and improve outcomes where it matters most: https://lnkd.in/eprCQWp4 Alt text: Two people talking in an outdoor setting
