I'm delighted to be a judge on this year's UK Junior Water Prize organised by CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management), in partnership with Arup and Jacobs. "This prize challenges young people in STEM to develop innovative yet practical solutions to our global water crisis. The winning UK entry will go on an all-expenses paid trip to represent the UK and their school at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition in Sweden, with a chance to win the grand prize of US$15,000! Minimum entry requirements - Aged 15-18 - Based in the UK - In secondary education when research was conducted - Max. 2 co-applicants Important dates Submissions open: 23 February Application deadline: Tuesday 5 May (NB: 9am!) Jury interview: one day in the week of 25 May* Winner notified: 29 May Winner announcement: 9 June, at CIWEM's Flood & Coast conference International competition: 22-27 Aug* *You will need to be available on these dates. We will work with you as much as possible to avoid any clashes with exams. Project stages Consult the full UKJWP student handbook for entry guidelines (see further down) Choose a topic to research Decide on a key hypothesis Collate background information Conduct experiments & research Analyse the results Proofread and finetune your paper What you need to prepare Your application should include your research paper of max. 20 pages, and an abstract of max. 200 words. If your application is shortlisted, you will be asked to present your project to the jury in person. If the jury names you the winner, you will have to create a digital academic poster and 1-minute video pitch for the international round.
