Designing with nature is no longer a question of ‘if’, but ‘how’, and data and digital technologies are part of the answer. Data and digital technologies are accelerating nature-based solutions (NbS) at scale across the built and natural environment, helping teams move from supposition to certainty, with better modelling, monitoring and decision-making. Learn more about how we are using nature-based solutions and digital technology to transform the built environment. Last month, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal officially opened the University of Gloucestershire’s new City Campus, marking a major milestone in the transformation of the former Debenhams building in Gloucester. We supported the University with multi-disciplinary engineering design services, working alongside project partners and drawing on our Higher Education retrofit expertise to help reimagine this historic structure as a modern learning environment. The project demonstrates retrofit at its best: retaining and repurposing the existing building while integrating sustainable systems, including high-efficiency heat pumps, heat recovery and significant insulation upgrades to reduce carbon impact. Last year, the city of Glasgow celebrated its 850th birthday - a milestone moment to reflect on its history and imagine what could come next. To mark the occasion, our Early Careers team in Glasgow developed a series of bold, place-shaping ideas for the city’s future. From rethinking transport corridors and public spaces to reconnecting communities with the River Clyde, the proposals blend fresh perspectives with technical insight. Together, they explore how Glasgow can become greener, more connected and more inclusive for the next generation. What would you like to see in Glasgow’s next chapter? How can hard-to-abate sectors decarbonise at the pace net zero demands? Our new report, developed with the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, provides evidence-based guidance on the deployment of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) to navigate common concerns and foster informed dialogue about these proven and regulated technologies. CCUS can complement electrification and renewables where process emissions and high temperature industrial heat leave few alternatives. Yet misconceptions about CCUS continue to slow adoption. “Informing the Deployment of CCUS” is for industry leaders, investors, policymakers, and NGOs seeking clarity on the role of CCUS in achieving net zero. Key highlights include: • Clear, science-backed responses to misconceptions about safety, cost, and effectiveness of CCUS • How robust regulations and monitoring ensure CCUS integrity • Practical focus areas to enable commercially self-sustaining projects in the next decade Explore how this resource can support your climate strategy. Read the report at: https://bit.ly/4aKyKQV Join the launch webinar on 5 March 2026, 16:00-17:00 CET by registering here: https://bit.ly/4rqYyqN You’ll have the chance to hear key takeaways from the report and discuss innovations driving CCUS deployment today. #NetZero #EnergyTransition #CCUS #Decarbonisation

The electricity grid is a critical enabler of the UK’s energy transition, with the potential to unlock economic and social benefits at scale, both locally and nationally. With ambitious investment, grid upgrades could support over 90,000 jobs and generate up to £194bn in GVA by 2040. But realising this value depends on how we deliver the whole energy system transition - aligning infrastructure, digital systems, policy, finance, supply chains and communities. In our latest report, Gridunlocked, we explore the programmatic approach needed to orchestrate these complex interdependencies and unlock benefits at scale. Discover how investing in the electricity grid can deliver wider economic and social value: https://lnkd.in/e8NgFAtp #Gridunlocked #WeAreArup #EnergyTransition

With 24% of the UK’s consumption-based emissions attributed to the built environment, there is an urgent need to reduce building-related carbon. This raises important questions: to what extent could using timber in typical new UK buildings reduce emissions, both at a single-building scale and nationally? And what factors influence the potential carbon savings? We’ve been exploring these questions with industry collaborators, examining how material choices can support lower whole-life carbon outcomes across the built environment. With improved walking and cycling connections, as well as better bus and tram interchanges, Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Project delivers an integrated transport solution that makes travel more accessible, sustainable and people focused. Our transport planners collaborated with engineers, landscape architects and urban designers to reimagine how Melburnians move through their city every day. Working within some of the city’s most constrained and heritage-rich environments – including Anzac Station, home to one of the world’s busiest tram corridors – we helped reshape streets to create safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. By balancing functionality with environmental sensitivity, we’ve helped create a resilient, inclusive transport network designed to serve Melbourne well into the future. In a joint venture with WSP and Arcadis, as part of the consortium led by Lendlease, John Holland and Bouygues Construction, we undertook detailed design for the Metro Tunnel and five underground stations. Why has workplace design become so complex in the mid‑2020s? Today’s offices are expected to do far more than provide desks and meeting rooms. They must support hybrid ways of working, reflect organisational values, respond to changing patterns of use and demonstrate clear progress towards net zero – all within buildings designed to last decades. In our new Insights article, we explore why there is no longer a single model for a “successful” workplace, and how shifting expectations around wellbeing, technology, inclusivity and sustainability are reshaping design decisions for owners and occupiers alike. We examine how organisations can navigate this growing complexity by focusing on people first, designing for adaptability, and aligning workplace strategy with long‑term purpose. Upcycling legacy buildings can offer a scalable, commercially viable path to decarbonising the built environment. How are AI and digital technologies helping to show what’s possible? Paul Sloman, our Global Property Science and Industry Leader, spoke to Forbes about how technological advances are reducing uncertainty around the cost, risk and feasibility of large scale retrofit – enabling more confident decisions to reuse rather than demolish existing assets. “With AI and digital tech we are rapidly reducing the uncertainty around the cost of retrofit. It’s the job of us technical advisors to give property developers the reassurance around cost to make retrofit even more attractive. In many times it can make sense from an economic and sustainability perspective,” he said. One example is Sydney's Quay Quarter Tower, recently named a finalist in the Build a Waste-Free World category of The Earthshot Prize 2025. The landmark building, managed by Dexus and owned by Dexus Wholesale Property Fund (DWPF), Mirvac Wholesale Office Fund (MWOF) and Rest, was recognised for reimagining environmental, social, and urban transformation through large-scale reuse. Rather than demolishing one of Sydney’s iconic buildings – originally completed in 1976 and the tallest in the city at the time – the team developed an adaptive, circular retrofit design approach alongside a coalition of architects, engineers, contractors, and developers, including 3XN/GXN, BVN Architecture, BG&E, Multiplex, Urbis, ASPECT Studios and Pier Property Corporation.
