This is a concern for everyone in UK defence manufacturing. Evidence given to the House of Commons Defence Committee makes uncomfortable reading. Delays to the Defence Investment Plan aren't just frustrating – they're actively pushing investment overseas, with the US, Germany and Poland all benefitting while the UK sits on its hands. As Make UK Defence's director general Andrew Kinniburgh puts it: "We are basically telling those companies, 'Perhaps you should invest somewhere else.'" And it's not just the big companies feeling it. Smaller businesses across the supply chain are facing cash flow pressures weakening the very industrial base the government is trying to build. The capability exists. The ambition exists. The money has been committed. What's missing is the pace and clarity to actually make it happen. It all started on the water. 🌊 AMufacture's co-founder William Howden Howden represented Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics before turning his eye for design and performance towards additive manufacturing. The same obsession with marginal gains that drives competitive sailing is at the heart of everything we do. After the Olympics, Will began designing and printing parts for high-performance racing boats. Sailing friends saw what he was producing and started asking for the same. He got so busy with it that the idea of a business took shape. What began with a small printer in a spare room has grown into one of the most advanced additive manufacturing facilities in Europe – producing end-use parts for marine, aerospace, defence and motorsport clients who need a manufacturing partner, not just a print shop. #AdditiveManufacturing #MarineEngineering #UKManufacturing #3DPrinting #AdvancedManufacturing

We've just about recovered from Oceanology International 2026. Three days at ExCeL London alongside HP Additive Manufacturing (AM) Solutions - 3D Printing and Matsuura Machinery Ltd and it's fair to say the interest in production-scale additive manufacturing for marine applications has never been stronger. William Howden joined a panel on 3D printing for marine, UUVs and offshore applications, we had some brilliant conversations at the stand and it's clear the marine autonomy sector is moving fast. The questions, conversations and sheer variety of applications people are exploring confirmed what we've always known: additive manufacturing is becoming central to how the next generation of marine and autonomous systems are designed and built. Thank you to everyone who came and found us. We'll be following up over the coming days and weeks. #Oi26 #AdditiveManufacturing #AdvancedManufacturing

Last day at Oceanology International with HP Additive Manufacturing (AM) Solutions - 3D Printing and it's been a busy show! Three days have given us even more insight into where the market is heading. Marine autonomy is moving fast. The complexity of components required, the need for rapid iteration and on-demand production – that's exactly what additive manufacturing solves when it's done properly at production scale. Thanks to everyone who has stopped by stand T021 so far and to those who caught William Howden's panel on 3D printing for marine and UUVs. There's real momentum here and it's clear the technology is becoming central to how these systems are being designed and built. #Oi26

We're heading to Oceanology International 2026. 🛥️ Marine engineering has been at the heart of what we do since day one – founded by a former Olympic sailor and naval architect, it has to be in our DNA. William Howden, our COO and co-founder, is speaking on a panel about 3D printing in marine, UUVs and offshore applications. Real-world examples of how additive manufacturing is already solving problems in these demanding environments. Components need to work in extreme conditions, be precise and reliable and available quickly. That's what we do. If you're working in marine, come find us along with HP Additive Manufacturing (AM) Solutions - 3D Printing from 10 - 12 March on stand T021. Defence investment is welcome. But will procurement catch up? The Chancellor's Spring Forecast announced significant commitments – £650 million for Typhoon upgrades, a new Royal Navy frigate, and a £1 billion Leonardo deal for 23 medium-lift helicopters including Proteus, the UK's first autonomous uncrewed air system. But investment alone isn't enough. The capability to deliver production-scale additive manufacturing for defence exists right now. But outdated procurement processes are locking UK SMEs out of the opportunity. More...👇 #Defence #UKManufacturing #Procurement #AdditiveManufacturing #SpringForecast #SpringStatement
