A few reflections on #Circularity and #WaterCredits shared at the Outlook Business C3 Summit panel last Friday. For me, circularity cannot be achieved in isolation. Unlike carbon, water is inherently local, with risks, impacts, and solutions deeply tied to the catchment. This calls for a shift beyond efficiency, reuse and recycle, at site-level, what I would describe as closed-loop circularity, towards open basin-level circularity, where water is managed collectively to deliver shared outcomes. At its core, this is about moving from isolated actions to collective, catchment-based approaches, grounded in local realities, enabled by shared data and governance, and driven through collaboration to address systemic water challenges. The Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) provides a practical pathway to catalyse this shift. The AWS Standard anchors water use in catchment context and links site-level action with basin-level outcomes. As a global membership organisation, AWS convenes the platform for collaboration among diverse stakeholders, helping move circularity from isolated efforts to coordinated, credible action. The recently launched AWS Standard V3.0 further strengthens this approach. - https://lnkd.in/g_8apEZf The discussion also touched on water credits, where credibility depends on how strongly they are grounded in stewardship behaviour. From a stewardship lens, key questions to consider include: • Are they rooted in context-based water challenges? • Do they deliver measurable improvements at the catchment level, beyond volumetric accounting? • Do they complement and strengthen responsible site-level practices, rather than substitute them? • Do they enable collaboration and collective action among diverse stakeholders? • Do they embed transparency, accountability, and robust governance? Encouragingly, momentum is growing across sectors. Unlocking long-term impact, however, will depend on how effectively we bridge ambition with action on the ground and embed stewardship in practice. It was insightful to hear perspectives on wastewater as a resource, community-led approaches to water stewardship, and the importance of credible, incentive-based mechanisms to scale action, from my fellow panellists: - Anjali Makhija, CEO, S M Sehgal Foundation, - Ganesh Kaliyaperumal Director, Sustainability, Bisleri International Pvt Ltd, - Dr. Nupur Bahadur Subject Matter Expert, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) & KPMG India. Grateful to Surojit Bose, Sustainability & ESG Leader, Intueri Consulting, for anchoring such an enriching discussion, and to Sudipto Dey and the Outlook Business team for bringing together a meaningful summit with diverse and insightful conversations. #WaterStewardship #WaterCircularity #CollectiveAction #WaterCredits #Sustainability #WaterResilience #A4WS #AWSStandard

  • 👏 Congratulations to Nestlé Waters & Premium Beverages for meeting their certification commitment and certifying all 39 bottling sites to the AWS Standard! We recently spoke to their Global Head of Water Stewardship, Mickael Clément, about their achievement. He said: "It’s a landmark achievement for our business, and a huge source of pride for everyone involved. It’s a commitment we set for ourselves to achieve by 2025, only made possible by investment, capability-building and of course the care, passion and expertise of local teams at our sites. Of course, the work doesn’t stop here! Our water stewardship journey continues, with ambitions to maintain our AWS certifications and strengthen our water regeneration plans for even greater impact. The AWS Standard give us a clear and rigorous framework to guide our actions." As we look forward to World Water Day on Sunday, we are excited to announce three significant milestones on our water stewardship journey.    We have 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 – 𝟯𝟵 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 – 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱.   This is a first in the food or beverage sector. Two sites, Buxton in the UK and Tunuyán in Argentina, have achieved Platinum certification, the highest level available. The AWS Standard – which is the only globally-recognised independent framework for water stewardship –  is a cornerstone of our commitment to collective water resilience and sustainable water management. The Standard guides how we care for water in our factories and within watersheds and communities.   This landmark achievement is complemented by the 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝟳𝟬 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 at our sites across the world. These projects support our ambition to protect, restore and return more water than we use in our operations.  From peatland and wetland restoration, to reforestation, irrigation efficiency and improved water access, each project is designed to address local shared water challenges, in collaboration with experts, communities and stakeholders. Last year, these projects already returned 14.1 million cubic metres of water and as they reach their full potential they will leave a lasting impact for future generations. These results are only possible thanks to the great collaboration of our colleagues and many partners; who are all committed to achieve lasting impact and greater water resilience. We are also proud to announce 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 IUCN, who provide strategic and science-based advice on integrating biodiversity benefits in our water stewardship plans, aligning with their Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions.    Looking forward, Nestlé Waters & Premium Beverages will continue to work with AWS and IUCN to ensure ongoing improvement and scaling to further collective action for the protection and restoration of freshwater ecosystems and strategic catchments.   #WorldWaterDay #WaterStewardship #WaterResilience

  • 🎉 The AWS Standard Version 3.0 is here! Today, we are proud to launch a streamlined and strengthened Standard to help companies around the world deliver credible water stewardship. This moment is the result of a two-year, transparent, inclusive revision process with contributions from hundreds of stakeholders across nearly 30 countries. The AWS Standard has been proven to provide companies with social, environmental and economic benefits – from better engagement with stakeholders in their communities to improved water quality and balance. Version 3.0 builds on that foundation with greater clarity and improved alignment with other sustainability agendas and corporate-level reporting. It is a stronger framework for tackling water challenges that are growing more complex by the year. Water isn't getting less important. If anything, the stakes are rising, and businesses across every sector are looking for credible, practical ways to act. That's exactly what this Standard provides. “Water is now a board level risk as water related shocks are already disrupting supply chains and undermining business continuity. The AWS Standard Version 3.0 provides a practical and trusted framework for companies in any sector to act on those risks, work with others in their catchments and show investors, regulators and communities that their claims of good water stewardship are real.” - Adrian Sym, Chief Executive Officer, Alliance for Water Stewardship   We would also like to extend a huge thank you to every organisation and individual who contributed to this revision – from our Technical Committee to the many stakeholders who gave their time and expertise.  Learn more about the AWS Standard V3.0 and download your copy today ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eum32c_8 Read the press release ➡️https://lnkd.in/eF6Nrhfk --  #AWSStandard #A4WS #WaterStewardship

  • 💧Tanzania is home to some of Africa's most extraordinary freshwater resources. Yet right now, parts of Dar es Salaam are receiving tap water just once a week. Rapid urbanisation, climate-driven droughts, industrial pollution and ageing infrastructure are converging into a water crisis that no single actor can solve alone. In February 2026, AWS delivered its Water Stewardship for Public Sector training in Dar es Salaam, as part of the GIZ Green and Smart Cities SASA programme in partnership with LeafTurtle. Over two days, more than 30 participants from Tanzania's Ministry of Water Resources, water basin boards, the Vice President's Office, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Fisheries Department, and institutions across Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Mwanza and Dodoma came together to explore how water stewardship can bridge the gap between public regulators and private sector actors. The goal? Building the trust-based relationships that enable collective, responsible water management and stronger resilience across Tanzania's catchments. This was just the first step. Over the coming months, AWS will continue engaging with participants to understand how water stewardship can best support Tanzania's national targets.
