This is my last question and I will bounce... there are many warnings on Reddit about fake medical marijuana cards being sold online for Thailand which is what I was planning to get before flying in Phuket. So where is the correct place to get a legit medical cannabis prescription for Thailand? On Reddit there is spam from some weed shops saying they can sell you a prescription on the spot same time that you buy product from them but are those legal and legit? Or am I supposed to find a doctor in Phuket first and get a medical prescription and bring it to the weed shops? I don't want to pay $800 fines to the police if they say my prescription is fake..... thanks you guys rock

2Do you have a medical reason that justifies getting a cannabis prescription?jcaron– jcaron2026-01-19 08:01:02 +00:00Commented Jan 19 at 8:01

1Yes I do but in my home state I don't need a prescription to buy weed so I will not have any papers about that to show in Thailand.user243274– user2432742026-01-19 08:11:23 +00:00Commented Jan 19 at 8:11

@user243274 Go ask your medical practitioner for a prescription and explain that you need it to show in Thailand.Traveller– Traveller2026-01-19 08:32:36 +00:00Commented Jan 19 at 8:32

I have no personal experience with it, I do not use weed. These comments are from the past 6 months and it sounds like utter chaos with many cannabis sellers openly breaking the law in Thailand, or medical clinics "rubber stamping" prescriptions by email or video call. All very uncertain until the new regulations are finalized, but it does appear that every retailer will soon be required to have a certified alternative medicine doctor on the premises in the near future.
"Some shops will sell without license still, but even if you have to get one its only a couple hundred baht and your passport info; the shop calls a clinic and they email you a license.... it's a joke"
"legally speaking yes you need a medical certificate. but there are apps being created that allow you to get a medical certificate from a doctor on the spot via phone video call it's all a bunch of bs if you ask me"
"You legally need one to purchase. Any shop that gives you one without is breaking the law - it's just a fact. Although, many don't require and personally I'd avoid because for 100 baht I'd rather legally purchase than illegally. Saying that though, many shops sell without issuing a prescription. Many shops provide prescriptions at the store/online."
"It's true that many dispensaries don't bother to ask for a prescription; however, the BiBs look at it differently if you're caught without one. It could get expensive. So it's cheap insurance to have one while here."
"You need about 10 min, your passport, and a medical condition like insomnia. Most shops will offer a virtual or in person consultation on site, and issue you the medical card - valid for 30 days."
