Every year, Apple releases a MacBook Pro that makes every other laptop on the market feel inadequate. As someone who has been reviewing almost every generation of the Apple Silicon based MacBook Pro, my daily driver has been the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 Max for a couple of years now and its finally getting a worthy upgrade.

When I reviewed the MacBook Pro M5 earlier this year, I ended with cautious appreciation. It was fast, yes, but it felt like a stepping stone. A machine waiting for its bigger sibling to arrive and complete the story. Well, the sibling is here. Unlike the M5 that was offered only in 14-inch package, the M5 Pro and M5 Max series are offered in both 14-inch and 16-inch variants and I definitely had to pick the latter.

But specs on a page have never been the full story with Apple silicon and they certainly aren’t here.

We put this machine through everything. Standard benchmarks, professional workloads, and for the first time, a real-world AI test. What we found will matter to anyone who has ever wondered how far a laptop can go before it stops feeling like a laptop.

The polishing cloth gives you a hint that my variant is upgraded with the Nano-texture display that ransoms additional RM630 over the standard display because ever since I tested this on the base M5 MacBook Pro, I’m genuinely in love with it. This one is definitely worth the upgrade.

A few things deserve to be called out immediately from the spec sheet.

My review unit is configured at the absolute top of the M5 Max lineup; 128GB unified memory, 40-core GPU, and 4TB of storage. The only slider I didn’t push to maximum was storage, where 8TB exists but the jump to it is harder to justify for most workflows.

The 614GB/s memory bandwidth is the headline number. That is more than double the M4 Max’s 273GB/s, and for anyone running memory-intensive workloads like video editing, 3D rendering, or local AI inference, this is the number that changes how the machine actually feels in use, not just in benchmarks.

Video professionals will also notice the Media Engine upgrade. The M5 Max ships with two video encode engines and two ProRes encode and decode engines which is double what the M5 Pro gets, alongside hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, plus AV1 decode. For anyone cutting 4K or 8K ProRes footage, that doubling matters.

Connectivity gets a meaningful upgrade too. Three Thunderbolt 5 ports replace the Thunderbolt 4 on the base M5, tripling bandwidth to 120Gbps per port. Combined with HDMI 2.1, this machine can drive up to four external displays simultaneously, a direct fix for one of my biggest complaints in the M5 review.

Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 round out the story, both generational jumps over the M5’s Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The 100Wh battery paired with the standard 140W charger means no compromises on the power side either.

One thing the spec sheet alone cannot explain is the CPU architecture. Apple introduced something genuinely new with the M5 Max that deserves its own section. Before we get into numbers, we need to talk about super cores.

M5 Max Chip – Super Cores vs Performance Cores vs Efficiency Cores

With every generation of Apple Silicon, the performance gains have been incremental but consistent. The M5 Max, however, arrives with something Apple has never done before, which is, a three-tier CPU core architecture that fundamentally changes how the chip distributes workloads, and a new Fusion Architecture that changes how the chip itself is built.

Let’s start with the cores, because Apple’s naming here caused genuine confusion when the M5 Pro and M5 Max were announced.

On previous Apple Silicon chips, you had two types of CPU cores: performance cores for demanding tasks and efficiency cores for background work. Simple. The M5 Max throws a third tier into the mix and reshuffles the naming entirely. What Apple previously called performance cores are now called super cores – the six fastest single-threaded CPU cores Apple has ever built, with improved front-end bandwidth, a new cache hierarchy, and enhanced branch prediction. These are the cores responsible for the record-breaking single-core scores we will see in benchmarks (hint).

Then there are the 12 performance cores and this is where the confusion starts. These are not the old efficiency cores with a new badge. Apple engineer Anand Shimpi confirmed they are a completely new microarchitecture, purpose-built for multi-threaded workloads. They sit between the old efficiency cores and the old performance cores in terms of both capability and power draw. Think of them as a genuinely new middle tier that’s faster than what any previous generation called efficient, but more power-conscious than the super cores.

The M5 Max has no efficiency cores at all. Every single core in this chip is either a super core or a new performance core. The only chip where you would still find efficiency core is the base M5. The floor has been raised, not just the ceiling.

The second architectural shift is Fusion Architecture which is Apple’s branding for combining two silicon dies into a single system on a chip using a high-speed interconnect. This is how Apple scaled the M5 Max to 18 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores without fragmenting the unified memory pool or introducing the latency penalties that plague traditional multi-chip designs. The result is a chip that performs like a monolithic die while achieving core counts that a single die at this process node simply could not deliver.

Together, these changes deliver up to 30% higher CPU performance over the M4 Max for pro workloads, not from raw clock speed alone, but from a fundamentally smarter distribution of work across cores that were each designed for a specific purpose.

CPU Performance

Starting with Cinebench 2026, the MacBook Pro M5 Max scores 7,925 in multi-core and 733 in single-core. The multi-core result puts it neck and neck with the Mac Studio M4 Max at 7,934 despite the Mac Studio being a plugged-in desktop unit. That alone is a statement. A laptop matching a desktop in sustained CPU workloads is not something that happened in the Intel era, and it is not something most people expect even from Apple Silicon.

Cinebench 2024 tells a similar story. The M5 Max scores 1,499 multi-core and 198 single-core, again trading blows with the M4 Max Mac Studio’s single core at 190 despite lagging behind in multi-core performance but comfortably ahead of the M3 Max at 1,375. The single-core improvement over every previous generation reflects exactly what the super core architecture was designed to deliver.

The Cinebench R20 Rosetta 2 emulation result is particularly impressive. The M5 Max scores 8,975 multi-core under emulation, pulling ahead of the M4 Max Mac Studio at 7,083. The fact that it leads in emulated x86 workloads speaks to the raw throughput advantage the new core architecture delivers even when the code was never written for Apple Silicon. Then again, this test is turning obsolete and it will be the last time we will bother about Rosetta. We’re past Intel era on Macs and these tests are not really relevant anymore.

GPU Performance

GPU performance is where the M5 Max separates itself most dramatically. In Cinebench 2026’s GPU test using MAXON Cinema 4D’s Redshift engine, the M5 Max scores 84,570 against the M4 Max’s 68,131. That is a 24% uplift in GPU rendering performance from a machine you can carry in a backpack.

Cinebench 2024 GPU reinforces this, with the M5 Max hitting 20,220 versus the M4 Max’s 16,094. A consistent pattern is emerging: every GPU workload the M5 Max faces, it handles with a meaningful margin over its predecessor.

3DMark Steel Nomad shows the M5 Max scoring 4,296 in the standard test and 17,665 in Steel Nomad Light, both leading the chart. The gap over the M3 Max is substantial, nearly 57% in the standard test, which matters for anyone doing heavy 3D work or game development on this machine.

The 3DMark Solar Bay Extreme result is perhaps the most striking of all. The M5 Max scores 16,371 against the M4 Max’s 11,955, a 37% improvement in ray tracing performance. For comparison, the base M5 MacBook Pro 14-inch sits at 4,154. The Max chip is not just a step up from the base M5, it is an entirely different class of machine.

Overall System Performance

NovaBench gives us the most holistic view, combining CPU, GPU, memory, and storage into a single score. The M5 Max scores 5,898 overall, with the CPU subscore of 3,362 leading the pack. Every component in this machine is pulling its weight, and the storage and memory scores reflect the bandwidth advantages we outlined in the specifications section.

What the benchmarks confirm is straightforward: the MacBook Pro M5 Max is the fastest laptop we have tested, and in most workloads, it is faster than the desktop Mac Studio M4 Max that sits on our test bench. If you are upgrading from an M3 Max, the jump is substantial. If you are coming from anything older, it will feel like a different era of computing entirely.

But benchmarks only tell half the story. The other half is what this machine can do in the real world, and that is where things get genuinely interesting.

MacBook Pro M5 Max and Local AI: Running a 122-Billion Parameter Model in Your Backpack

For the first time in Pokde’s review history, I went beyond traditional benchmarks to test something that is rapidly becoming one of the most compelling reasons to own high-memory Apple Silicon. Local AI inference. No cloud. No API. No subscription. Just the machine, the model, and raw silicon doing the heavy lifting entirely on device.

This is not a gimmick test. As AI tools become deeply embedded in developer and creative workflows, the ability to run large language models locally has real practical value. Privacy-sensitive codebases stay offline. Token costs disappear. Rate limits become irrelevant. And with 128GB of unified memory, the MacBook Pro M5 Max is one of a very small number of consumer devices on the planet capable of running models that were, until very recently, the exclusive domain of server racks.

To put this in perspective, I ran the same test across three machines in my lab using a standardised benchmark prompt, measuring tokens per second, completion time, output quality, and hardware behaviour under sustained inference load. The machines tested were the MacBook Pro M5 Max 16-inch with 128GB (this reviewed machine), the Mac Studio M4 Max with 128GB, and the Mac Studio M2 Max with 32GB. The results, and the story behind them, are unlike anything we have published in a MacBook Pro review before.

The Setup

To run local AI inference on Apple Silicon, I used an open-source pipeline called Claude Code Local, which routes Claude Code through a local MLX server running quantized models directly on the machine’s unified memory and GPU. MLX is Apple’s own machine learning framework, purpose-built for Apple Silicon, and it is what makes running models of this scale on a laptop even possible.

The benchmark prompt was identical across every machine and every model: generate a complete interactive particle physics simulation in HTML with gravity, wall collisions, mouse repulsion, real-time FPS and energy display, speed-based color mapping, and three live sliders. It is a task that requires sustained reasoning, code generation, and multi-step output, making it a far more meaningful test than a simple question-and-answer prompt.

I monitored each run in real time using my very own custom built live dashboard tracking GPU frequency, GPU power draw, memory usage, and compressed pages. Compressed pages matter here because the moment a system starts compressing memory under model load, you are borrowing against performance you do not actually have.

The Models

I tested four models across the machines, chosen to represent the realistic range of what 32GB and 128GB machines can handle:

The Results

Mac Studio M2 Max 32GB

The M2 Max handled the 31B Gemma model at around 14 tok/s but crashed repeatedly on the particle simulation task due to Metal memory exhaustion. The 32GB ceiling is simply too tight for sustained agentic inference once the KV cache starts growing. This machine is capable of running local models for simple tasks, but complex multi-step generation pushed it past its limits every single time. It is not a hardware failure, it is a memory ceiling. Probably just a starters benchmark to let you know that if you’re getting a 32GB RAM setup, you’re not gonna have much luck running local agentic inferences. At least in 2026, as I do believe that local MLX optimizations might improve RAM utilizations in future.

The M4 Max told a dramatically different story. With 128GB of headroom, it completed the full benchmark without a single crash across all models it was capable of running. Gemma 4 31B completed the task in 20 minutes 4 seconds at 22 tok/s. Qwen2.5 Coder 32B ran at 23 tok/s but suffered from tool call formatting issues with the server implementation. The headline result was Qwen 3.5 122B, a 122-billion parameter model, completing the benchmark in just 2 minutes 2 seconds at a peak of 53.3 tok/s. GPU power peaked at 26,631 mW during inference, with the GPU hitting 1,578 MHz and compressed pages staying at zero throughout. Llama 3.3 70B at 8-bit quantization timed out after 51 minutes due to the format being poorly suited for Apple Silicon’s GPU acceleration.

MacBook Pro M5 Max 128GB

The M5 Max matched the M4 Max in memory composure, zero compressed pages across every run, but pulled ahead where it counts. Gemma 4 31B ran at 25.3 tok/s versus the M4 Max’s 22 tok/s, a 15% improvement. Qwen2.5 Coder 32B hit 25.6 tok/s. And Qwen 3.5 122B, the most demanding model in the suite, completed the benchmark in 3 minutes 9 seconds at 54.9 tok/s peak, with the GPU detected at 1,525 MHz and power peaking at 70,028 mW. The extra time compared to the M4 Max was not a performance regression. Qwen 3.5’s thinking mode engaged for 86 seconds of internal reasoning before generating output, a model behavior rather than a hardware limitation.

Llama 3.3 70B repeated the same story as the M4 Max, timing out after 37 minutes with RAM briefly exceeding the 128GB physical limit at 131,019 MB peak. The 8-bit format occupies roughly 70GB just to load, leaving almost no room for the KV cache during generation. This is a quantization problem, not a machine problem.

The M5 Max is not just a faster M4 Max for AI workloads. The 614GB/s memory bandwidth means the GPU can feed data to the model faster, which is why sustained inference stays smooth even as context windows grow. The M2 Max’s crashes were not random. They were inevitable given the memory pressure math. The M5 Max handles that math with room to spare.

For developers exploring local AI as a privacy-preserving or cost-free alternative to cloud APIs, the 128GB M5 Max is the first consumer laptop configuration where it becomes genuinely practical, not just technically possible.

The Good

Display: The Nano-Texture Difference

I said it in the M5 review and I will say it again here. The Nano-texture display is one of those upgrades that feels impossible to go back from once you have lived with it. On a 16-inch panel at this brightness and resolution, the effect is even more pronounced than it was on the 14-inch. The 3456×2234 Liquid Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz already delivers stunning visuals on its own. Add the Nano-texture treatment and working in any lighting condition, whether in a bright Malaysian afternoon or under harsh office fluorescents, simply stops being a problem.

The slight colour offset that comes with the matte surface is present but genuinely negligible in daily use. What you gain in glare elimination and reduced fingerprint transfer far outweighs what you give up. At RM630 over the standard panel, it is one of the few optional upgrades I would tell anyone to take without hesitation. I think its about time Apple starts exploring OLED options for the MacBook Pro series though as we’ve seen Liquid Retina XDR for far too long and this could use a refresher.

Build Quality: Still the Gold Standard

Nothing has changed here and nothing needed to. The all-aluminium Space Black chassis remains one of the best feeling laptops ever made. The hinge is firm without being stiff. The trackpad is still the largest and most responsive on any laptop. The keyboard feels deliberate and satisfying with every keystroke. Apple has refined this form to the point where there is genuinely nothing left to improve, and they have had the discipline to leave it alone. Speaking of keyboards, you may notice that Apple has silently removed the labels on the Tab, Caps Lock, Shift, Delete and Return keys. I’m totally fine with this, but I’m entirely sure that Boon is not gonna be happy about this. He has been raging for years on missing labels even on soft keys and these are hard physical keys.

Connectivity: Finally, No Compromises

This was my biggest complaint about the base M5. Thunderbolt 4, two external displays, and a 70W charger felt like deliberate restraint on a machine wearing the Pro badge. The M5 Max corrects all of it. Three Thunderbolt 5 ports at 120Gbps each, HDMI 2.1, SDXC, MagSafe, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. You can drive four external displays simultaneously. You can connect a high-speed external NVMe and get desktop-class storage throughput. You can charge at 140W. This is what a Pro machine’s port selection should look like, and it finally delivers on that promise completely. If anything, the base MacBook Pro M5 wasn’t deserving of a Pro title. This one is.

Performance: A Laptop That Beats Your Desktop

The benchmarks made this clear but it is worth saying plainly. In nearly every test we ran, the MacBook Pro M5 Max matched or exceeded the Mac Studio M4 Max, a plugged-in desktop unit. Cinebench 2026 multi-core: 7,925 versus 7,934. Cinebench 2026 GPU: 84,570 versus 68,131. NovaBench overall: 5,898 versus 4,800. This is a laptop on battery outperforming a desktop. That is not a normal sentence.

Local AI: A Genuine Leap Forward

128GB of unified memory and 614GB/s of memory bandwidth turns this machine into something no previous laptop could claim to be: a practical local AI inference platform. Running a 122-billion parameter model in real time, on device, with no internet connection and no per-token cost, is not a party trick on the M5 Max. It is a workflow. For developers, researchers, and anyone handling sensitive data who cannot afford to pipe it through a cloud API, this capability alone changes the value equation of the machine entirely. In my past reviews, I have been rather defensive on machines trying to push AI capabilities when they had nothing to prove. This right here is exactly the one that I was waiting for and it delivered with flying colours. The next time a machine is going to tell me its capable of running “local LLMs”, this is how unforgiving I would be because with all the AI hype train being chased by every brand out there, I want them to put their foot where their mouths is.

Battery Life: Nothing Has Changed and That Is a Compliment

The 100Wh battery in a machine this powerful continuing to deliver all-day battery life is something that should not be taken for granted. Under mixed workloads including writing, browsing, and light development work, I consistently got through a full working day without reaching for the 140W charger. Under sustained heavy load the story changes, as it should, but as a portable professional machine it handles real-world daily usage with the same quiet confidence every MacBook Pro generation has delivered since M1. To give you a perspective, here are two real world battery tests for two very different scenarios in my workflows. When I’m using doing browsing and programming, the battery managed to pull far beyond 24 hours. When I juiced it up with extremely heavy agentic processing, I exhausted the battery within 5 hours. In my dictionary, this is insanely good. Keep in mind, this is MacBook Pro M5 Max still weighs the same as the MacBook Pro M2 Pro that I reviewed 3 years ago.

There is no laptop on the market that sounds like a MacBook Pro, and the M5 Max 16-inch continues that tradition at full volume. The six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers produces wide stereo sound with a low-end presence that has no business coming out of an aluminium laptop chassis. Dolby Atmos content on the built-in speakers creates a genuinely spatial listening experience, and Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking through AirPods Pro and AirPods Max elevates it further.

The three-mic array with high signal-to-noise ratio and directional beamforming means calls and recordings on this machine sound professional without any external hardware. None of this is new for the MacBook Pro lineup, but that is exactly the point. When something is consistently this good across multiple generations, it deserves to keep being said out loud.

The 12MP Centre Stage camera on the MacBook Pro M5 Max does something genuinely clever that I had not spent enough time with until this review. Desk View uses the wide field of view of the built-in camera and applies computational perspective correction to generate a synthesised overhead view of whatever is in front of your laptop, all from a single lens with no additional hardware. No external camera, no overhead mount, no accessories. Just the notch camera looking forward and software doing the rest.

In practice, it is surprisingly usable. Showing a physical document, demonstrating a product, sketching on paper, or doing a hands-on walkthrough during a video call becomes possible without any additional setup. The result looks like a top-down camera angle despite the camera pointing straight ahead. It works natively in FaceTime and through screen sharing in any video app that supports window capture. As someone who regularly records walkthroughs and does remote sessions, this is the kind of quietly useful feature that earns its keep without announcing itself. It almost makes me forgive the notch for existing. Almost.

The Bad

The White Power Adapter

I know. I have said this before. But I will keep saying it until Apple fixes it. Space Black MacBook Pro, black MagSafe cable, white power adapter. For a company that obsesses over every design detail down to removing the text from keyboard keys, shipping a premium Space Black machine with a white brick is an oversight that borders on intentional stubbornness. Apple, the matching black adapter need to exist for the black MagSafe cable. Finish the set.

Nano-Texture Is Still an Optional Upgrade

The Nano-texture display is exceptional and I have said as much throughout this review. But the fact that it costs extra on a machine at this price point continues to feel misaligned. At the tier the M5 Max occupies, the best display Apple makes should come standard. Treating it as an add-on feels like holding back the full experience for a machine whose buyers are not exactly price-sensitive at this point.

It Does Get Warm. And Loud.

For all the efficiency Apple Silicon is celebrated for, the M5 Max under sustained heavy load will remind you that there is real silicon doing real work inside this chassis. During extended rendering sessions, heavy compilation, and especially during our local AI inference runs, the machine gets noticeably warm on the bottom and around the keyboard deck. Not uncomfortable, but present enough that you will feel it on your lap during a long session.

The fans, which you may forget exist entirely during light to moderate usage, make their presence known under sustained load. They are not aggressive by Windows laptop standards, but they are audible in a quiet room. If you are the type who works in silence, plan accordingly. If you are the type who already has AirPods Pro in during deep work sessions, you will never hear them at all and I would strongly recommend keeping that habit alive.

This is not necessarily a design flaw. It is physics. A machine pushing 70,000 milliwatts of GPU power during a heavy workload needs somewhere for that heat to go, and Apple’s thermal solution handles it competently. Just do not expect it to stay silent while it does.

The Notch Is Still Here and I Still Do Not Like It

I have said this in every MacBook Pro review I have written and my position has not changed. The notch housing the front-facing camera interrupts the display in a way that never fully disappears from your awareness, especially on a 16-inch panel where your eyes spend a lot of time near the top of the screen. Yes, macOS tucks the menu bar around it neatly. Yes, you stop noticing it after a while. But you never fully stop noticing it. Every other premium laptop manufacturer has found ways to minimise or eliminate the camera intrusion on the display. Apple, with all the engineering resources in the world, has chosen to keep it. For a machine at this price and with this display quality, the notch remains the one thing I wish I could unsee.

The Price

This is not a cheap machine and there is no diplomatic way to frame it. My review unit configured at 128GB, 40-core GPU, and 4TB storage sits at a price point that will make most people pause. For professionals whose workflows genuinely push this hardware, the value case is real and I will make it in the verdict. But for anyone considering this as a general purpose machine or a modest upgrade from something recent, the honest answer is that you are paying for headroom you may never use. The M5 Pro at a lower price point delivers most of what most people will ever need from a MacBook Pro. The M5 Max is for the rest of us, and we know who we are.

The MacBook Pro M5 16-inch starts from RM10,999 at its base configuration and you can push the sliders to its highest point that will set you off at a whopping RM30,529. The unit that I have at hands here is RM25,429, shy of RM5,100 for not opting the 8TB storage and going for 4TB instead. So yeah, its a dream machine that will most likely stay as a dream machine for most.

MacBook Pro M5 Max Review Verdict

There is a version of this verdict where I spend several paragraphs carefully weighing who this machine is and is not for. But after weeks of putting the MacBook Pro M5 Max through everything I could throw at it, I find myself with very little to hedge.

This is the best laptop I have ever used. Not the best Apple laptop. Not the best professional laptop. The best laptop, full stop.

The M5 Max is not just an incremental upgrade from M4 max, it raised the ceiling of what a portable machine is supposed to be capable of. Desktop-matching CPU performance on battery. GPU numbers that embarrass machines with dedicated graphics cards. 614GB/s of memory bandwidth feeding workloads that would have required a server room years ago. And the local AI inference capability, which I tested more rigorously than any review I have published before, is not a marketing talking point on this machine. It is a legitimate, practical, daily-use capability that changes the economics of AI-assisted workflows for anyone serious about privacy or cost.

Coming from a MacBook Pro M3 Max as my daily driver, the upgrade feels generational. What has been good, is retained and what can be better, has improved. Definitely a much pleasant experience that I had from the MacBook Pro M5 that I previously reviewed, screaming what I crave when I’m reviewing something that dares to carry the “Pro” label.

Is it perfect? No. The notch is still there and I still do not like it. The fans make themselves known under heavy. The Nano-texture display costs extra when it should not at this price point. And the white power adapter shipping with a Space Black machine remains one of the great unresolved mysteries of Apple’s design team.

But these are complaints I am making about the touted best laptop on the planet. Context matters.

If you are a developer, a video editor, a 3D artist, a researcher, or anyone whose workflow genuinely demands sustained high performance from a portable machine, the MacBook Pro M5 Max 16-inch is not just the right answer. It is the only answer. And if you are sitting on an M3 Max or older, this is the upgrade you have been waiting for.

Still the king. Now even more so.
