The death of hosting, revisiting childhood hobbies & what do you do if your kid gets hit?!

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Wednesday!! Getting ahead of this: YES - Alex & Harrison are in the wrong seats (#SocialDistancing). We open with the moments you realize you're THE parent of the house: Alex packing a pizza-and-banana lunch for dance class, Harrison standing in the yard with the plumber feeling like his dad.. and the one that reminded Alex of her childhood: clacking around in heels before Dear Media by Day, hoping Tate remembers the sound the way she remembers her mom's. Plus a DM that's changing our vocabulary: when you're putting on makeup (or heels!!) in front of your daughter, say mom is getting FANCY, not pretty.. because she's always pretty, with or without it. Then we break our own podcast rule to talk about the weather (a storm is coming and Jules flies out in the THICK of it), padel lesson one is complete (drenched, humbled, hooked), and Jules walks us through her Europe itinerary.. or total lack of one. Milan to Florence to a wedding to Santa Margherita to the south of France, with essentially nothing planned. Send her your suggestions!!  On the homefront: SLEEP UPDATES! Rocky's progress and Tate's new move of joining us in bed. Then our internet convos: the unspoken rules of men's handshakes (dap, shake or bro hug??), and the big one: hosting in America has collapsed from 42% of people hosting monthly in 1975 to 12% today. We get into why, and our whole case: hosting does not need to be complicated. Monday we texted friends "we're having burgers tonight" and that was the invite. DoorDash counts. Paper plates count. Bring back hosting!! Next: OU vs. Texas week in a house divided (Tate is picking who Harrison bets on lol), the Brooklyn bathroom with a 10 minute TIMER, the case for revisiting your childhood hobbies (what was yours?!), and should we do a Survivor bracket?! And we close with the one we really want your input on: if your kid gets hit or bitten, what do you teach them to do? We walk through the options, where we've landed for now, and why this might be a Dr. Brown question. Tell us what's worked for your family. Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS! Stop Trying to Make Your Kid Feel Good About Themselves

Two parents came to Dr. Becky on the same day, both worried about their kid's confidence. One had a kid who wouldn't join the group. The other had a teenager who wouldn't leave the group. Dr. Becky says: maybe confidence isn’t what we think it is. She breaks down what confidence actually means, then she names three things well-meaning parents do that quietly work against building that kind of confidence. Thanks to Carter’s, Good Inside’s new Confidence Program is free for every family for the next six months. Click here to learn more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Episode 415: Raising Conscious Sons and Daughters with Dr. Shefali

Dr. Shefali Tsabary, author of Raising Conscious Daughters and Raising Conscious Sons, explains how technology targets boys through their drive for achievement and girls through their need for approval. She describes girls struggling with perfectionism beneath polished exteriors, and boys caught between a culture that treats masculinity as a bad word and a manosphere that turns it into a cartoon. Instead of starting with a digital detox, she urges parents to build "havens" of connection: small shared tasks, side-by-side movement with boys, and seeing girls as their ordinary selves. She closes by reminding girls that they don't have to fit in to belong, because "sovereignty is her liberation." 1KHO 932: Stopping the Worst Childhood Epidemic in History | Dr. Robert Melillo, Disconnected Kids

Kids are struggling in numbers we’ve never seen before, and Dr. Robert Melillo believes we’re missing a crucial piece of the story. In one of the most fascinating conversations I’ve had, we talk about what’s happening inside the developing brain, why movement and sensory experiences matter so much, the surprising importance of primitive reflexes, what crawling and other early milestones have to do with later development, and why screens may interfere with processes the brain desperately needs. Dr. Melillo has spent more than 30 years studying children with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, learning challenges, and developmental delays, and his work offers parents something deeply needed: hope. I took 15 pages of notes on his book Disconnected Kids before this interview, and I truly believe this is information every parent and educator should know. 291: How Your Kid’s Exclusion Hurts You Too | Michelle Icard

Your sobbing middle schooler has just seen a Snapchat of their friend group hanging out without them and feels devastated …and you have no idea whether you should call the other parents, try to help your child cheer up, or just stay out of it. Watching kids be excluded by friends they’ve had for years often leaves parents feeling bewildered, upset, helpless - or all of the above. Feeling angry on your kid’s behalf and wanting to rush to the rescue are completely understandable reactions. But you’ll want to take a beat and listen to this episode before acting.  Michelle Icard joins us today to break down how tweens going through social exclusion at school are usually just testing out new friends and identities. Old friendships don't always grow at the same pace and some kids get left out in the process. Your job isn't to engineer the friendship back together. It's to tend to your own feelings (perhaps hitting the gym, talking with a friend, or consulting with a clinician), then sit with your kid and ask what might help them feel even a little better today. Painful social shifts, including periods of feeling socially adrift, can ultimately foster resilience, independence, and the skills needed to build new friendships and interests. Dr. Lisa Damour is a clinical psychologist, New York Times bestselling author, and globally recognized expert on adolescent development who partners with UNICEF to support parents worldwide. Michelle Icard is a middle-school parenting expert with over 20 years of experience helping families navigate early adolescence. She is the author of Middle School Makeover, Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen, and Eight Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success. ________________  GET DR.
