An ex-partner of Betty's grandson, Barry Rogers, claimed he had admitted to suffocating his grandmother with a pillow. Other former partners told detectives the same story. In this episode, forensic psychologist Kerry Daynes looks at how what should have been the perfect crime unravelled. She also asks what the evidence reveals about the two people at its centre, and why Rogers couldn't keep quiet about it. UPDATE: The Sodder Children

In 2019, we covered the Sodder children, five siblings who vanished after their family’s home burned down on Christmas morning in 1945. Officials said they died in the fire, but no bodies were ever found. And now, with new information from a family descendant, we’re taking another look at what happened when their parents started asking questions, and why the family spent decades believing the children may have survived. If you have information that you believe could be related to the disappearance of the Sodder children, please contact us at tips@audiochuck.com or Miranda Weeks at 5sodderkids@gmail.com.   Head over to our Crime Junkie YouTube channel to WATCH this episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMgUheoxcGw  Source materials for this episode cannot be listed here due to character limitations. Michelle Kinney

In July 2018, 53-year-old Michelle Kinney was living alone in Dubuque, Iowa. Known for her kindness and willingness to help people struggling, Michelle often opened her home to strangers who needed a place to stay. When concerned neighbors found her brutally murdered inside her apartment, investigators faced a large pool of potential suspects. A break came when detectives reviewed city traffic cameras and spotted Michelle walking home with a stranger carrying her groceries. The man entered her apartment with her and was later seen leaving alone. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Michelle Kinney. Her killer was already in jail on unrelated charges when detectives questioned him, and after initially denying involvement, he confessed to attacking Michelle in a rage, stabbing her repeatedly with a knife and fork before stealing money and leaving in her clothing because his own was covered in blood. Investigators soon learned the killer had a disturbing history of violence against women and had failed to report to probation just months before Michelle’s murder. The case left Michelle’s family devastated, but they continue to honor the generous, outgoing woman who spent her life helping others. Corpsewood Manor

"And I started to fall asleep. And then, when I was about half-asleep, laying on my side facing the window, it felt like someone crawled into bed behind me. As I started to wake up and roll over, not really expecting to see anyone, I felt hands on my upper back and I started to panic. I suddenly thought that someone else really was in my bed with me. My mind raced, wondering how they could have gotten in so quietly? Were they already hiding in the closet or something when I entered the room? Was I going to die?" The Salem Witch Trials, kind of. Dan explores the spirits who may still be hanging around, all these years later. He starts off with plenty of history about Salem and the Witch Trials, which is really quite fascinating. The locale of the story takes place in the Joshua Ward House AKA The Merchant Hotel, where you can tempt fate and stay the night. Would you dare to stay there and risk being strangled by a ghost? From Salem, Dan takes us down to Georgia for a more salacious, sexy, steamy story about the Corpsewood Manor. If you let you kids listen to this show and you have any qualms about sex, you might want to skip this one! We hear the story of Dr. Charles Scudder and his bizarre departure from his "normal" life and the hedonistic life he seeks. A chicken coup, a sex dungeon and wild orgies seem to be at the center of this bizarre story where true crime and horror tales collide. During Lynze's portion of the episode, she lighten's things up a tiny bit with a creepy but funny story about a possible cult sighting. The story itself takes place in the deep woods of Atlanta, Michigan which may conjure up memories of Dice Rd. What happens when you mix booze, teenagers and cultiness? For her second story, we travel to Hawaii. Lynze reveals that she thinks Hawaii might be one of the most spiritual places in the US, due to the Polynesian culture. Also, she wonders if Pearl Harbor and the mass casualties have caused additional activity here. Those thoughts aside, this story presents what appears to be a modern day possession. No Kid Hungry is a national campaign run by Share Our Strength, a nonprofit working to solve problems of hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world. After 25 years of successfully investing in local nonprofits and helping find the best approaches to eradicating poverty and hunger, Share Our Strength launched No Kid Hungry in 2010.As a child hunger organization, ending childhood hunger is their primary focus, though Share Our Strength continues to invest in and develop other campaigns. https://www.nokidhungry.org/ Check out Scared to Death merch in the store! http://BadMagicMerch.com Please rate, review, and subscribe anywhere you listen. MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF: Lakesha Thompson

In May 2023, Lakesha Thompson’s entire family was upended by a single bullet that took their mother away from them forever. From the beginning, who pulled the trigger has been the question at the forefront of her family’s mind. Investigators determined pretty quickly that it was a self-inflicted wound.
