Ian Copia, M. nag-react ditoIan Copia, M. nag-react ditoAlternative Credit Scoring in the Philippines — The Real Inflection Point Is Now For years, alternative credit scoring in the Philippines was discussed more than implemented. Today, that is changing. Between the continued build-out of the Credit Information Corporation (CIC), the expansion of digital banks, and the scale of wallet ecosystems like GCash and Maya, we are entering a new phase of credit infrastructure maturity. Here’s what’s different in 2026: • Digital transaction footprints are deeper and more consistent • SME digitization accelerated post-pandemic • Regulators are more engaged with data governance • Lenders are under pressure to expand responsibly • Traditional bureau data alone is no longer sufficient In ASEAN broadly, markets like Indonesia and Vietnam have already seen rapid adoption of alternative scoring models integrated into fintech ecosystems. The Philippines is now catching up — but with a more structured regulatory backbone. The opportunity is not to “replace” traditional credit bureaus. It is to: → Enhance thin-file visibility → Improve SME risk assessment → Reduce cost of credit through better segmentation → Enable cross-lender data interoperability → Support financial inclusion without sacrificing portfolio quality The next wave will not be driven by hype. It will be driven by disciplined data architecture, responsible AI deployment, and strong collaboration between lenders, fintechs, and credit infrastructure providers. ASEAN remains one of the most under-penetrated credit markets globally. The question is no longer whether alternative scoring will scale. It is who will build the most trusted models who will develop solid data exchange models — and who will integrate fastest.

I remember that during the workshop, I asked who in the audience — mostly OFWs — got scammed. They shouted — KAMIIII. And then they laughed good naturedly. “Masakit, Ms. Salve, pero kayod na lang ulit.” That’s how resilient Filiiinos are. But resilience with improvement. The moment they heard of a financial literacy training, they came in droves! Ang dami ng gusto matuto. Nakakatuwa ang ordinaryong manggagawang Pilipino.

Ian Copia, M. nagustuhan itoIan Copia, M. nagustuhan ito5 Signs Your Family Business Has Outgrown Its Accounting System I've walked into a number of family businesses over the years. And I can usually tell within the first 15 minutes whether the accounting system is serving the business or holding it back. Here are the five signs I see most often: 1. Month-end closing takes forever. If your team is still chasing receipts, reconciling branch cashbooks, and manually consolidating Excel files by the 15th of the following month that's not a people problem. That's a systems problem. 2. You can't see your real cash position without asking someone. When the owner has to call the bookkeeper just to find out how much cash is in the bank, that's a red flag. You should know this in real time, not after a phone call. 3. "Magkaiba ang records ng accounting at ng operations." If your warehouse says you have 50 units on hand and your books say 80 you don't have an inventory problem. You have a systems problem that's slowly becoming a financial problem. 4. Your BIR filings are always rushed or late. If every tax deadline feels like a fire drill, your accounting process isn't built for compliance. It's built for survival. There's a difference. 5. You're growing, but your margins are shrinking and you don't know why. This one hurts the most. Revenue is going up, but profitability isn't following. If you can't trace where the money is going at the branch or product level, your accounting system isn't giving you the visibility you need to manage a growing business. If three or more of these hit close to home, it's time for a conversation not a patch job. A proper financial system doesn't just record what happened. It tells you what's happening now, and helps you decide what to do next. Happy to talk if you're ready to make the shift.
