These past few years you’ve seen the growth of multiple incompatible architectures. Now you’re supposed to cope with all this and make your applications work in a distributed client-server environment. The growth of the Internet, the World-Wide Web, and “electronic commerce” haveintroduced new dimensions of complexity into the development process. The tools you use to develop applications don’t seem to help you much. You’re still coping with the same old problems; the fashionable new object-oriented techniques seem to have added new problems without solving the old ones. You say to yourself and your friends, “There has to be a better way”! The Better Way is Here Now Now there is a better way—it’s our new model. Imagine, if you will, this development world… • It’s still dead simple. • Your development cycle is much faster. • Your applications can be created across multiple platforms. Write your spec once, and you never need to port them—they will be recreated if you without your hand-rolled modification on multiple operating systems and hardware architectures. • Your applications are adaptable to changing environments. • Your end users can trust that your applications are secure, and you can use protection against viruses and tampering through security scans. You don’t need to dream about these features. They’re here now." So who did it? Well, actually, no one, I cheated you, but only a bit. I changed “Java” to “LLM ”, cut some phrases and added a few words It's from “The Java Language Environment” by Sun Microsystems, introducing Java in 1995. Yes, they even used the em dash. Java was introduced to scale development horizontally, making it easier to involve more people in coding. So, to add more code Was it pictured as it is now: language to build sophisticated, complex solutions? Not quite. Joel Spolsky wrote about Java "JavaSchool that won’t teach C and won’t teach Scheme is not really teaching computer science, either. As useless as the concept of function currying may be to the real world, it’s obviously a prereq for CS grad school. I can’t understand why the professors on the curriculum committees at CS schools have allowed their programs to be dumbed down to the point where not only can’t they produce working programmers, they can’t even produce CS grad students who might get PhDs and compete for their jobs" Dumbed down, sounds familiar? Solving software issues with different ways of coding isn't new, so whether we code or not is the wrong question to ask. The U.S. Surgeon General called loneliness a public health crisis, comparing its health impact to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. How is that possible? Because we confused audience with community. An audience knows OF you. A community knows you. An audience consumes your content. A community shows up when your content stops. An audience grows your reach. A community grows YOU. I ran THAT Conference for 15 years, a family-friendly tech community of thousands. When we shut down in 2024, something unexpected happened: the members continued to show up for each other. They still make intros. Still mentor each other. Still answer the phone at 10 pm on a Tuesday. No platform. No program. No incentive. Just belonging. That's what community actually is. Not a Slack channel. Not a follower count. Not engagement metrics. It's the difference between people who know your name and people who know your story. Humans aren't wired for audiences. We're wired for tribes. Our brains process social exclusion the same way they process physical pain. We evolved needing people who actually knew us, not thousands who liked our post. If you've been feeling a void you can't quite name, that nagging sense that something's missing despite all the "connections", this might be it. You don't need a bigger audience. Hayrullah Yasar nagustuhan itoHayrullah Yasar nagustuhan itoOver the past few months, rising fuel prices and the broader energy crisis have pushed more people to rethink how they move around cities. We saw it as a window to encourage more people to try cycling as a viable form of transportation 🚲✨ Together with Beatrice Lauren Go and the team at Atleta Filipina, Elle and I organized a bike commuting workshop attended by 28 women last weekend. With the help of our favorite bike mechanic Jeza Rodriguez, we covered everything from road safety and route planning 🗺️ to basic bike maintenance ⚙️ and navigating the very real anxieties of cycling in Metro Manila (which are most acutely felt by women!). A lot of conversations around mobility and sustainability stay abstract, but biking is incredibly tangible. Biking changes: 🏙️ how people experience their city, 💸 how much they spend getting around, 💪🏼how independent they feel, 🛣️ and how much space they feel allowed to occupy on roads. And at a time when many global problems feel too immense or systemic to meaningfully affect, grassroots initiatives feel important because they operate at a human scale. Even as our infrastructure remains woefully inadequate, you can see the shift happen in someone trying bike commuting for the first time, someone realizing they’re capable of leaving their village, and someone feeling less alone doing it. Hayrullah Yasar nagustuhan itoHayrullah Yasar nagustuhan itoMost Spring developers use @Transactional without knowing what propagation actually does They add the annotation The code works They move on Until one day a method silently commits something it should have rolled back And nobody can explain why The reason is almost always propagation Propagation does not control the work your method does It controls the boundary your method runs inside That is the mental model Every transactional method asks a question when it is called Is there already a transaction around me What should I do about it The seven propagation modes are just seven different answers to that question → REQUIRED joins the caller or starts a new transaction if none exists → REQUIRES_NEW suspends the caller and runs in its own isolated transaction → NESTED uses a savepoint inside the existing transaction → SUPPORTS joins if a transaction exists otherwise runs without one → MANDATORY demands an active transaction and fails fast if missing → NEVER fails if a transaction is active and runs only outside one → NOT_SUPPORTED suspends the active transaction and runs without one The common mistakes look the same in every codebase REQUIRES_NEW used inside a parent transaction where the caller swallows the exception and the inner work commits anyway NESTED used with JPA where it silently degrades to REQUIRED because Hibernate does not support savepoints the same way MANDATORY used as guard logic instead of being treated as a real boundary contract Junior engineers reach for REQUIRES_NEW whenever something feels independent Senior engineers ask a different question first Should this work survive the failure of the caller If yes then the boundary belongs in its own transaction If no then REQUIRED is the right answer Propagation is not a configuration detail It is a design decision about which operations are atomic together and which are not Get that wrong and your data ends up in states the code never intended If a transaction fails in your system today do you know which other writes survive and which ones disappear Share your answer below Follow Amigoscode for practical lessons that help developers think like real software engineers #java #springboot #softwaredevelopment
