Recently, Lucas Ruland shared NIBC Bank's perspective on the sustainability of data centres during a panel at the Infrastructure Global Summit. Here are his key takeaways: 📍 Location matters:  The availability of green power, water, and ability to re-use waste heat is crucial but is becoming more complex. Densely populated areas like the FLAP-D markets face challenges due to competing needs for these resources. Developers are now moving to other locations in Europe like Berlin, Zurich, Milan, Madrid, and Barcelona for easier access to land and power. 📈 Efficiency & growth:  The data centre industry is constantly improving its efficiency through initiatives like The Climate Neutral DC Pact, focusing on carbon-free energy and more efficient operations, reduced water consumption, and circularity. However, the industry's rapid threatens to outpace these efficiency gains, with AI potentially exacerbating this challenge. 🏛 Financing & regulation:  Banks and financial institutions have incentives such as green loans, sustainability-linked loans, and the Infrastructure Support Factor (Do No Significant Harm Principles) that benefit borrowers / lenders supporting sustainable data center projects. How does NIBC Bank address these sustainability challenges?  At NIBC Bank, ESG is integral to our due diligence process. We assess, for example, power efficiency, waste heat re-use, flood risks, and heat stress for every new data centre project we finance. Last year, we conducted a baseline measurement for our data centre portfolio by collecting relevant data with our clients. Our next step is to develop a climate transition plan to enhance the efficiency of our portfolio and help our clients achieve more efficient digital infrastructure as well. Just a day in the life of an Infrastructure Financing Analyst at NIBC Bank… Today, we're shining the spotlight on three of our new champs who are diving into the world of banking and building their networks through NIBC’s Talent Program.   Our Talent Program is designed to empower all our talents, helping them develop both personal and professional skills. This ensures they are well-equipped to support our clients in the best possible way and have a great start with us at NIBC Bank!   This year’s event was held in the historic Nutsbank building in our hometown, The Hague. It was an intense but fun week for Kavisha Leelasena, Sarolta Sára Dubay and Valeria Llazo:   Kavisha: "Working in the Infrastructure team in London, I’m thrilled to be able to participate in this year’s Talent Program in The Hague alongside my Dutch colleagues. Our onboarding days were incredibly fun and insightful, teaching me a lot about NIBC’s postwar history and evolution, and providing a platform for me to build connections with colleagues across the Bank."   Sára: “The onboarding days were an excellent opportunity to familiarize myself with the bank's operations and culture, connect with colleagues from different departments as well as to discover new sides of my personality. Data centres are growing, but financing isn't keeping pace 💻💸 In the rapidly evolving world of data centres, new projects demand more funding than banks alone can provide. Quote FD: “‘The first data centre we financed eight years ago cost €20 million,’ says Jan Willem van Roggen, Managing Director at NIBC Bank. ‘Now, the costs start at around €400 million.
