Andrea Blohm heeft dit gedeeldAutism + everything that comes with it - Yesterday I had a table at the Eindhoven Autism Event and was wonderfully surprised by the amount of interest my presentation generated. I always had at least a few people at my table. It was very interesting what drew people in, what they related to and wanted to discuss. I handed out a lot of fliers and engaged in meaningful conversations with clinicians, writers, professors, and autistic individuals. It’s clear that this movement and the people in it have rejected the idea that autism should be seen purely through a medical lens and instead proactively designed environments, tools, and lifestyles that accommodate their neurodiverse needs. It’s exciting to see what can be done through education and advocacy work. Wonderful job done by Ilonka van der Sommen moderating the event. Amber van Gastel for designing such a cool game. Arnout Nederpelt for taking necessary steps in the workplace. And Marloes Schoormans for the cookies and great advice!

Traits shaped by mood, trauma, personality, or neurodevelopmental differences can bring unique strengths to workplaces, relationships, and problem-solving. But as AI becomes more capable, are we actually designing workplaces that understand and support different kinds of thinking — or just expecting people to fit existing systems?

Sometimes with an audiobook, sometimes with just the voice in my head to keep me company (she’s 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 chatty). I had some of my best ideas on these walks. Crossing a bridge and thinking about building connection. Passing by a tea shop and getting inspiration for my brand. (𝘖𝘬𝘢𝘺 𝘭𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘵 - 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘺 '𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘣𝘺' 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱 🤌) After a few months, it hit me that I hadn’t had this type of uninhibited reflection space in years. I’d been too busy chasing tangible results and racing down the defined track. Does this mean I couldn’t be creative? Can creativity even happen in high-pressure settings? But then I think back on the 12-hour days at Tesla when we were scaling, building, expanding at a thousand miles a minute. Constant sprints. The Roadrunner at full speed. But that pressure and the constraints of reality forced me to come up with novel solutions. I had no choice. It was innovate or die. So, which is it? Do we need open space for our brains to wander, or constraints to focus our solutions into something productive? Sorry to say, but we need both. Unstructured time to let ideas bubble up, and constraints to nudge us into action. The key for me was knowing which the moment called for. For most of my Tesla days, I was in full execution mode. I knew the target, and my space to get creative was in figuring out how to reach it. Now as an entrepreneur, strategic ideation falls fully on me. I’m not blindly executing someone else’s vision but building my own. So those meandering walks and reflective journaling mornings matter a lot more than they used to. So for me, right now, it’s the walks. And the tea shop, obviously. 𝘗𝘪𝘤: 𝘌𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘯. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧. 😂 … 𝘏𝘪! Andrea Blohm heeft hierop gereageerdAndrea Blohm heeft hierop gereageerdControl, avoidance, fear of conflict. The three patterns that break leaders are emotional. For some leaders, it’s control. You may think you're letting go of it, but when things really start slipping, you can't resist the pull to step in. It keeps things running, but it also drains you and prevents your teams from stepping up themselves. Good in the short term, but it has a ceiling. Overcoming this pattern requires regulating your relationship with failure, uncertainty and experimentation. For others, it’s avoidance. You have a brilliant mind that can rationalize almost anything, creating "logical" stories that actually just keep you in your comfort zone. The way we work here, is through the body. A strong mind will rationalise anything, but the body will tell you when you're stepping back instead of forward. For other leaders it’s harmony-seeking. You’re a natural nurturer, but you might find yourself leaking energy by preventing conflicts, favouring positive attitudes and yes-sayers. Great in short-term, but it has a ceiling. I’m continuously auditing my own patterns as well, so that they don't contaminate my sessions. The things I find are usually related to need for control: I find it continuously difficult to just let go and trust my intuition. And here's the difficult bit: the pattern doesn't disappear the second you see it, but its grip on your potential begins to loosen. It’s the difference between being swept away by a current and finally realizing you’re in the water. You’re still in the flow, but now? Now, you’re the one steering.

There's a framework for the global moment we're in: BANI. Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, Incomprehensible. And it captures something most of us are struggling to name. I've been in a lot of conversations about psychological safety and what organizations can do about it. Things like team dynamics, participatory leadership, creating space for all voices came up. But as a consultant to different organizations who has chosen to use his perspective and identity to create safe spaces for others, safety is a privilege I don't always get to access myself. I deal with many different voices, different identities, different pressures. And in that continuous negotiation, I've had to find my own anchor. For me, it's a practice within systemic leadership: grounding myself in meaningful moments, meaningful knowledge, and the forces that remind me what I believe in and why I do this work. My safe space is not an actual physical space, it’s a set of things I return to when the noise gets too much. Here's an exercise for you: think about what your safe space is. Is it your family? Your friends? The feeling of creating impact? The knowledge you carry and what you've been taught? Whatever it is, find it, name it, and ground yourself in it. This is how you sustain your complex work of leading, contributing, creating change in a world that never slows down 💜 What is your safe space?
