Tech founders experience huge stress, and massive impacts on their personal life - and often these are struggles behind closed doors. People often don't talk about it because they want to come across as always confident and always in control, or because of the stigma when we talk about mental health. Massive respect for the first CEO of Polarsteps - Koen Droste - who speaks so openly about what this looks like, and how he overcame it. Here's an extract of his recent interview with the FD and some behind-the-scenes on what founder burnout looks like, how yoga can help, how travel is healing - and lots more. It also shows how much it matters when you choose who your co-founders are. Polarsteps was started by four friends, all travelers, all with the same values for the company - when Koen needed to step back, CTO and co-founder Maximiliano Neustadt stepped into the CEO role and steered the Polarsteps ship through Covid magnificently. Polarsteps came out of the pandemic stronger than ever - on a huge growth upswing, and profitable. Yes, the product is incredible, but it's the team that makes things like this possible. Building something huge can take so much from people on a human level - I'm so lucky I get to work with these extraordinary founders at Polarsteps.

This is one of my favorite activations from our Appalachian Trail Campaign this year. Every single thru-hiker who walks into one of our partner hostels will take a shower. Honestly, it's half the reason they book a hostel. So obviously it was a no-brainer for us to show up in the shower with them 🙋♀️🚿 No asks, no QR codes, no pitch...just some cheeky labeling during a moment of silence and relaxation that hopefully makes them smile, and gives them another reason to remember us 🛀

How do we use Liquid Glass at Polarsteps? That was the main question I answered yesterday at the Apple “Let’s Talk Liquid Glass” event in Amsterdam. Here are our main findings from implementing our new design for iOS 26: - Stick to native components as much as possible. - Don’t slap Liquid Glass on everything. - Subtly optimize Liquid Glass settings for readability. - Embrace the native design systems on each platform (as much as possible, without losing your brand). - If you can’t sell it to your boss: beyond all the user benefits, PR and featuring can be valuable added bonuses. A big thanks to Annikki Laine, Andrew Walker, and Aniket Roy for inviting us and guiding me through the process. Also, a shoutout to Hidde van der Ploeg and Paul Veugen for sharing their incredible insights.

Yesterday our incredible co-founder Job Harmsen was invited by Apple to share stories from the Polarsteps design journey, our latest updates and experience with liquid glass. Our design and product teams are so intentional with beautiful design. I love to see others getting to hear about this in action 🙌

The last couple of years we've seen some push back in tech against DEI/inclusion work. I'm so proud that at Polarsteps we still care just as deeply about including people - an example of this is that our incredible People team, led by Sascha Vloet, works so hard to make sure our parents feel supported in taking on this exciting new adventure. Sharing some of what we do here in case others want to copy some...! The team has gone above and beyond the Dutch government rules for parents to ensure our teams feel happy and excited about parenthood while in the company, adding: - Additional fully-paid maternity/parenthood leave to ensure parents have more time at home with their new babies - Additional fully-paid leave for any week a newborn has to spend in the hospital - Fully paid time off for fertility treatments and additional remote working allowance to enable this - No-questions-asked paid additional leave for any kind of pregnancy loss - Additional weeks of partner/paternity leave (as someone whose mum went out to work while my dad stayed at home with 4 children - which was always something that raised eyebrows when we grew up! - I feel very proud that Polarsteps recognises the importance of both parents having time at home with their children 👪) For our LGBTQ+ families or those in less traditional set ups, we found that the Dutch government has limited protection for parents still going through a process to become legal parents. So: we've ensured everybody at Polarsteps who isn't a birth-giving parent and is directly involved with the caretaking of the baby can take 8 weeks of paid parental leave, regardless of legal status. Dutch law also focuses only on birth-giving parents for extended parental leave, so we've been explicit in adding that primary-carers (regardless of gender or if they were birth-giving parents) can use the full maternity/parenthood leave we offer to mothers/birth-giving parents 🏳️🌈 Part of the joy of a scaleup is getting to see our colleagues' and friends' lives grow and become enriched by children; I love that our People team is so determined to make this a positive experience. If you want to adopt any of these policies in your team and would like our Notion templates, feel free to comment below and I'll DM them to you!

Wow, Polarsteps has been nominated for the King Willem I prize ... this feels very touching. Despite being used all over the world, we're proud to be a Dutch company and we definitely will keep our orange heart as we grow 🧡
