How do you create a landmark for diplomacy, culture and collaboration on a constrained urban site? Ireland House Tokyo is the new home for Ireland’s diplomatic and cultural presence in Japan, bringing together the Irish Embassy, ambassador’s residence and state agencies in one highly efficient building. Located in one of the world’s most seismically active regions, the project required innovative structural solutions to respond to both earthquake forces and a compact city-centre footprint, while also respecting neighbouring access to daylight. Designed through collaboration between our Dublin and Tokyo teams, the result is a sustainable, energy efficient building that reflects both Irish and Japanese design traditions. Cities are playing a critical role in decarbonising the built environment - but approaches to implementing whole life carbon processes remain fragmented. Our new report, developed with the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, introduces a criteria‑based framework to assess how effectively cities are translating whole life carbon ambition into action. It provides a practical way for cities to assess and improve their approaches, while offering industry greater clarity on direction, helping to unlock investment and scale low-carbon solutions. Applying the framework across six global cities (Bogotá, Cape Town, London, New York, Paris, and Shanghai), the report highlights where progress is being made, and where greater consistency and alignment could accelerate decarbonisation of the built environment. How can new infrastructure reconnect a town and unlock growth? Before Gull Wing Bridge was built, frequent bridge openings across Lowestoft created congestion and disrupted movement between the north and south of the town. The new crossing provides a vital new route across Lake Lothing, improving connectivity for residents, businesses and visitors while creating new regeneration opportunities. At its centre is a distinctive rolling bascule bridge with a 38m span engineered to open in under two minutes, balancing efficient movement with continued maritime access to the Port of Lowestoft. Stronger and more frequent weather events cannot be prevented but can be prepared for. Alongside structural flood and landslide protection, Peru is installing an Early Warning System to protect more than 800,000 residents in areas vulnerable to extreme weather events. With the technical support of the UK Delivery Team, formed by Arup, Mace and Gleeds the Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN) has installed the first of a network of weather radars and digital monitoring platforms, to improve forecasting of weather events and increase the ability of communities to respond. How can residential towers become a forest in the sky? Introducing Bosco Verticale, a residential project in Milan's Porta Nuova area, part of a major urban redevelopment. Our collaboration with the architect extended beyond engineering to champion the integration of greenery. With 900 trees and thousands of plants, the towers have become a biological habitat, improving air quality and combatting pollution. We tackled challenges like structural stability for trees and ground vibration above Milan's Metro tunnels. Through careful analysis and assessments, we ensured the trees thrive while maintaining the building's integrity. This project merges functionality with sustainability, creating a ‘forest in the air’ that supports the daily lives of its residents with a reduced environmental footprint. How can data and AI help clean up one of the world’s most polluted rivers? In partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and RiverRecycle, we’ve developed a digital twin proof of concept of the Pasig River to help address one of the world’s most severe plastic pollution challenges. By combining satellite imagery, sensor data, hydrology and AI analytics, the digital twin demonstrates how to track plastic as it moves through the river, identifies hotspots, and tests clean up scenarios before action is taken. This data-led approach gives policymakers and communities the evidence they need to design targeted, effective interventions and shows how digital twins can bridge the gap between data, decision-making and real-world impact.
