We're pleased to bring you a small update to MuseScore Studio: version 4.7.4.

You can get the update shortly via MuseHub or right away at MuseScore.org.

New instruments

This update adds the following instruments to the New Score dialog:

  • Chinese: Guqin, Pipa, Yangqin
  • Japanese: Hichiriki, Sho
  • Korean (melodic): Ajaeng, Daegeum, Gayageum
  • Korean (percussion): Samul Buk, Samul Janggu, Sanjo Janggu, Sori Buk
  • Spanish: Castilian Dulzaina in F♯

Look out for some of the East Asian instruments in upcoming MuseSounds!

Other improvements

The update also includes:

  • Import audio to score: Shortcut in the File menu to our new online MP3 to MSCZ converter, which is currently in beta.
  • Minor engraving fixes, including for the Note Names plugin.
  • Keyboard navigations & screen reader speech for melismas (i.e. hyphens and extender lines in lyrics).
  • Braille triplet sign (which is different to other tuplets).
  • Several crash fixes.

Naturally, the update also has everything new in 4.7, including many new engraving tools, significant workflow improvements, helpful new guitar features, and important upgrades to the audio engine.

Nice new feature!
I'm interested in the technology behind it. What tool or library does it use?
"Basic Pitch(Spotify)" ?
"Onsets and Frames(Google's Magenta)" ?
"Omnizart(Academia Sinica)" ?
or other?

Thank you for all your work! I imagine many people are wondering how the development of Version 5 is progressing or even whether it has started yet, especially regarding the announced features such as automation, audio tracks, and others. It would be great to have some way of following the development of Version 5, as currently only Version 4 seems to be publicly trackable on GitHub.

Development of Musescore Studio 5 began around the end of last year (December 2025). I heard that Musescore Studio 5, which will include various key features such as automation, piano roll functions, MIDI mapping, and MIDI or VST routing, will be completed and released as early as this year. It depends on the progress, but if things go very well, I think the program will be released around the end of this year (December 2026). Of course, it could be delayed depending on the circumstances.

The initial projection of trying to have a 5.0 before end of year was made before the release of 4.7, which ended up taking much longer than expected as it grew into a larger release than originally planned. Work on 5.0 is definitely progressing, but I think it's pretty far behind where one might have hoped it to be. I could be wrong, but I'd be extremely surprised to see 5.0 in 2026. And in any case, it is also been made clear that the initial 5.0 will focus on just the automation, staff sharing, and a few other high-priority things, where some of the other more esoteric features you mention will wait for further updates.

In other words, this means that although development is currently underway, the heavy workload will cause the release of Musescore Studio 5—originally scheduled for the end of this year—to be delayed significantly longer than expected. To be honest, I was looking forward to the program's release in December 2026, so it is disappointing in many ways. However, I am really looking forward to the upcoming Musescore Studio 5. Based on the current situation, I estimate that Musescore Studio 5 will be released around the end of next year (December 2027), and I hope development is completed successfully so that the day comes when I can use the program next year.

Looking forward to the new tools and upcoming updates! Speaking of which, do you know approximately when the east Asian insteuments will be added to musesounds? I've been waiting for this for forever; I'm very excited.

Will future updates also include traditional African instruments (e.g., Kora, Balafon, Gonkogui, Kaganu, Kidi, Sogo, Kloboto, Boba, Atsimevu, Axatse, Totodzi, Mbira, Bendir, Lunga, Gung-Gong, Tar, Riq, Udu, Hadini, various types of talking drums, etc.) along with their respective MuseSounds?

So, I updated (latest MacOS on my computer) and now I have no access to muse sounds. I only have MS Basic. Activating it is greyed out and listed as inactive. I've quit both programs (MuseHub and MuseScore) multiple times. I've uninstalled all the sound files. I've wiped both installs multiple times and reinstalled everything. I still have no access. Please help. I've searched the forums. I shouldn't have bothered updating.

Update: I've fixed it. I had left one folder undeleted and both MuseHub and MuseScore were using info and preferences from that folder.

Would there be any possibility of adding JSON message support to MuseScore, allowing us to control the software via Stream Deck? That would be incredibly useful.

That addition of the traditional East Asian and Spanish instruments to the New Score dialog is a really nice surprise, especially with the tease for upcoming MuseSounds. The online MP3 to MSCZ audio import beta is also a massive workflow timesaver if it actually handles polyphonic transcriptions decently—though I'll probably still test it on a throwaway score first before trusting it with anything complex.
