Docs

@rianrietveld shared the updates for docs team as mentioned below.

  • Work is ongoing to extend and update documentation around alternative text (alt text) for images in WordPress
    • The goal is to make it useful not just for content creators, but also for developers
  • There is an active discussion around introducing a “Can I Use” section for coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. blocks
    • This would highlight the accessibility status of each blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience., helping users understand current support and limitations both.

Generic Updates was shared by @joedolson. He is currently working on preparing the post about accessibility changes in WordPress 7.0 release and working on identifying tickets targeted for 7.1 release.

He mentioned that most focus right now should be on testing 7.0, to ensure that any new issues or regressions are caught before the actual release.

@joedolson also mentioned that the work on the theme accessibility-ready updates has been delayed due to the complexity of last-minute changes in WordPress 7.0 release. It is expected to resume post-release.

The upcoming bi-weekly meeting is cancelled in favour of WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. General Updates

@joedolson shared many updates, with a few items still being worked on.
Only one accessibility ticket remains open for the WordPress 7.0 milestone (likely won’t make it), 32 tickets were closed for 7.0, focus will shift to accessibility goals for 7.1 after RC1, and RCRelease Candidate A beta version of software with the potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge. is the key time to review and fix accessibility issues in new features before final release.

Gutenberg

Real-time collaboration needs accessibility testing (especially with screen readers); contributors should test RTC with multiple users editing simultaneously, coordinate testing with @joedolson, and also review visual revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision. though they are less urgent.

Documentation

The team removed most of the Accessibility Handbook content from the Make Accessibility site and replaced it with pointers linking to the new documentation. This change was made to avoid the need to maintain two separate sets of documentation. The remaining content focuses on information about how contributors can get involved and contribute to the Accessibility Team.

General Updates

@joedolson shared many updates, with a few items still being worked on.

  • Tickets that already have patches but have not yet been committed should ideally be either committed or punted within the week.
  • Early testing of patches is highly valuable and helps move things forward more quickly. Overall, the project is in good shape, although there are still a few tickets that need to be completed.

  • The top priority should be testing the output of any new blocks, as those are the most difficult to modify after release, though there are also several new interfaces to review.
  • Contributors are encouraged to explore the release features and test them thoroughly, including navigating without a mouse, checking control names, and enabling visible label features. General accessibility testing guidance is available, and since each feature may require a different approach, specific testing instructions may be provided when needed. Some features may already have their own testing instructions available.

  • The way of navigating the content is now less depending on the main menu. For a better user experience, also for mobile views.
  • We added the Reading guide, vistors now can find content by role or expertise instead of by topic only.

The Accessibility Team Handbook now only addresses the info about the AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) team itself and for the accessibility documentation we now point to the Standards and best practices in the WP Accessibility Knowledge Base. Since redirects for popular pages are not possible, some subpages will be left in place to guide users to the updated content.

  • A new menu and navigation structure has been implemented on wpaccessibility.org to improve scannability and navigation.
  • The reading guide is nearly complete and helps visitors find relevant documentation more easily.
  • Work is in progress on documentation for accessible focus management (to be added under web forms and frontend code).
  • The team discussed updating the Accessibility Handbook to reference the new documentation (best practices section).
  • Since redirects for popular pages are not possible, stub pages will be left in place to guide users to the updated content.
  • Team members generally agreed that referencing the updated documentation is the right move.
  • Feedback on the new docs is welcome.

General Updates

  • Beta 1 for WordPress 7.0 is in this week only.
  • The team believes work is on track.
  • Bug scrub this week will focus on items needing decisions before Thursday.
