Here are the upgrades compared to the Fairphone 6 and how much the new phone costs.

V, 18 Aug 2026$649 and 649€? FairPhone, but the pricing isn't fair Or you do not know how VAT works. Let's bet on what i just said.

I know, watching everything online makes it look easy; actually doing it yourself is a completely different story...one that many people don't even come close to telling.

pl2rts, 18 Aug 2026"" You'll be able to pick one up for $649. I... moreOh boy 🤦🏻‍♂️. European prices include VAT, while US prices generally do not include sales tax, essentially the US equivalent of VAT. If you can’t understand that, maybe lay off the comments and do a bit of research first.

The net price in Europe is €545, plus €103.62 in VAT is €649. That VAT goes to the government tough, not into Fairphone’s pocket 😉.

€545 is roughly $632, so who exactly is paying more when the US price of $649 doesn’t include sales tax?

And nope, most product prices in the US do not include sales tax, because it varies significantly from state to state. And fairphone price definetly does not include taxes. So that $649 is the net price Fairphone receives from the sale, whereas the net price in Europe is, again, €545 😉

Still think you know better? Go to us.fairphone try to buy the phone and see what is that big text written at checkout that says: Estimated Sales Tax
        Not Yet Calculated.

Anonymous, 18 Aug 2026You can ignore taxes all you want, but that doesn't ch... moreYour are right, the numbers are not quite there but yeah, the fairphone 6+ net price in europe is about 545€ which translates to around $632. So, the US customer pays roughtly $17 more which translates to about €14.60 more.

Stuff to squeeze out in 7th gen ofc. I totally lost interest in the brand when they removed 3.5mm and removable battery, kinda defeat the point of paying such premium just to support "fair" wages, plus phones aren't difficult to repair nowadays.

Hold your horses. The price difference isn't actually a big price difference, because in Europe the advertised price includes VAT, while in the USA the advertised price is net and doesn't include sales tax.

So, yeah... the final price at checkout will be higher. Still don't understand? Do the math: €649 minus €103,62 VAT is about €545, which translates to roughly $632. So nope, the device isn't actually being sold cheaper in the US; it's just that the US doesn't have a standard nationwide VAT, so prices are generally advertised before sales tax.

Can't see this gaining any popularity in the US tbh.

Dometalican, 18 Aug 2026Ah, my bad. I missed that part. All good, its silly that it's even something people have to be concerned about in 2026. The dominance of verizon can't end soon enough.

pl2rts, 18 Aug 2026"" You'll be able to pick one up for $649. I... moreYou can ignore taxes all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that when you pay €650 for a phone, ~20% of that goes to your government. Fairphone only gets ~€540.

When we buy a "$650" Fairphone in the US, we pay $650 (€560) to Fairphone, plus an additional sales tax that goes to our government. Don't pretend Fairphone is "ripping it's own people off" when they're literally making less money per phone in Europe.

Also, Fairphone doesn't make phones in Europe, and they don't claim to. Regardless, you'd still pay VAT if they did.

I wish they would make an upgradable battery as a swappable part. They have the finger loop and wallet ones so why not have a bigger say 7000+ battery?

649 dollars to euro is 560 euro. Don't talk about the VAT or what ever. It's the end price. They can sell the phone to America 90 euro cheaper then they can do it in locally in their own country. That shows how messed up the brand is on ripping it's own people off

They say they build the phones in Europe and not import them from China where the VAT come to play

There... moreThe people who don't care about specs probably care about being ripped off so they don't buy a unknown European brand phone. The people who don't care about price will buy it only.

Fairphone 6+ price is probably higher then Samsung S26 base model price in US. So why would anyone want that Fairphone over S26 that have basically all specs way better and also come with 7 years of os support

arcadianwind, 18 Aug 202640% of the US phone market is Android according to StatCounterYeah and most of that 40% is Samsung. In the US, Android is synonymous with Samsung. Look at how long it's taken Google, the maker of Android to break into the phone hardware business with Pixel and they are still only a small fraction of the US marketshare.

So the Fairphone 6+ isn't just more RAM then the Fairphone 6 as the 6 was with SD 7s gen 3 and theis 6++ is with 7s gen 4. But still to expensive to care. Also i wonder how the prices be in US with this. Especially the effect of the tariffs that are placed on Europe by US

Also from the article the phone price number is same in dollars as in Euro so i would say that this makes me hate the brand even more that they rip us Europeans over Americans as they give lower price to Americans then Europeans, Currency value difference.
