Europe loosens its 2035 combustion ban - legacy automakers buy more time

22 October 2026
European lawmakers have agreed to soften the 2035 combustion engine ban to an 87.5 percent emissions reduction with green steel offsets. But this financial lifeline to legacy automakers raises questions if Europe can keep up with Chinese EVs.

I think in the future we will have the same thing as with smartphones
ODMs making the same car with a bit of cosmetic change and a different brand sticker
You already have parts from audi, seat, etc in an VW so its the next “logical” step, at least for a Manager to get a big bonus for this idea
Outsource it to china

Would be funny if all euro brands completely switched to electric and then China brands come in with petrol and diesel cars and take the whole market hahaha

mkkyu, 22 Oct 2026Add 100% combustion tax on all ICE cars, under 50,000 eur.You mean over 50000 right?

This is the kind of "solutions" politicians come up with, which solves nothing and only punishes citizens.

Europe would probably be better in terms of emissions if they stopped using diesel engines on small cars, and promoting hybrid vehicles like the Prius or Corolla Cross, Jazz EV, instead of plug-in types that have another set of issues of their own.

mkkyu, 22 Oct 2026Add 100% combustion tax on all ICE cars, under 50,000 eur.And another question is why only on ICEs under 50,000?
You plan to buy one over this limit or what?

And then what? You think suddenly people will buy EVs instead? Actually some yes, but a lot of people won't buy anything because It's simply too expensive for them.

Contrary to the article i believe most new car buyers lease their new vehicles. Of course a higher sticker price will increase the leasing payments. But, if you can't afford a new car it doesn't matter if leasing or pay cash. You can't afford it. And by 2035 there will be so many used EV's available. Certainly well below 10 thousand Euro.

And, why is the charging infrastructure a problem? Maybe in 2015 but certainly not in 2026.

That will hurt the european automobile industry a lot. The dinosaurs take down the future for them.
It's over. You shouldn't try to ride a dead horse.
