In Loving Memory of Dr. Eshetu Girma Today, we held a memorial service at the APHRC Campus for our departed colleague, Dr. Eshetu Girma, who rested on December 1, 2025. It was a beautiful gathering of family, friends, #IamAPHRC colleagues, and partners who shared stories that spoke to who Eshetu was: a loving husband, an amazing father, a warm son, a caring brother, a jovial friend, the kindest of human beings, a brilliant professional, and a committed scientist. Eshetu’s life, relationships, character, and the love that surrounded him is inspiring and a powerful reminder that we impact every person we interact with. Eshetu lived a meaningful, and purposeful life. It was truly a privilege to have Eshetu in our lives. His memory will be a blessing to us at APHRC. Gone, but never forgotten. May Eshetu’s soul continue to rest in eternal peace. #IamAPHRC Catherine Kyobutungi Tizta T. #MoreThanAMeal! Did you know school feeding is one of the most powerful platforms to improve child nutrition at scale? What is procured ultimately determines what children eat. There is growing evidence that sourcing food locally for school feeding programmes improves the freshness and diversity of meals, strengthens dietary quality for children, and supports smallholder livelihoods. Introducing clear local procurement targets can help translate this evidence into practice. For example, setting a minimum target such as 30% local sourcing, as implemented in Brazil and proposed by stakeholders in Kenya, would strengthen the inclusion of smallholder farmers and micro and small enterprises in school feeding supply chains. Embedding these targets within the National School Meals and Nutrition Strategy 2022–2032 implementation guidelines would help align procurement with nutrition goals #MoreThanAMeal #APHRCResearch #CCHeFSImpact Elizabeth Kimani-Murage Jacqueline Kung'u, PhD, Antonina Mutoro, Hazel Odhiambo, Gladys Mbai, Rikki Agudah, George Kaburu, University of Rwanda, Tanager, Novo Nordisk, Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), International Development Research Centre (IDRC), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), WRENmedia, Ministry Of Education, Kenya (MOE), Food4Education, Ministry of Health, Kenya
School feeding is one of the largest public food markets in Africa yet local businesses are often locked out. In Kenya and Rwanda, smallholder farmers and micro and small food enterprises dominate food production and trade. Yet school feeding procurement systems often favour large, capitalised suppliers – excluding the very actors closest to schools and communities. Evidence from CCHeFS shows this is not a capacity problem. It’s a design problem. Where procurement rules are redesigned – with smaller contracts, decentralised sourcing, and realistic payment terms – local businesses can supply schools, improve diet quality, and strengthen local economies. Fixing procurement is both a nutrition strategy and an economic one. #LocalSourcing #PublicProcurement #CCHeFSImpact African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), Rikki Agudah, George Kaburu, University of Rwanda, Tanager, Novo Nordisk, Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), International Development Research Centre (IDRC), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), WRENmedia

African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) reposted this
I was delighted to participate in the Second Annual Meeting of the INSPIRE Project held in Mombasa following our previous collaboration with Data Science Without Borders and African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). During the meeting, we had the opportunity to present our work on “Federated Data Analytics for Effective Data Sharing in Africa”, where we showcased our latest advances in privacy-preserving and distributed health data research. In particular, we presented new developments made by David Sarrat González in: - dsOMOP, enabling federated analysis on OMOP-based data sources - dsHPC, extending scalable high-performance computing capabilities within secure environments - dsVert, supporting vertical data analysis with DataSHIELD These advances strengthen secure, compliant, and scalable data sharing infrastructures across African research networks, fostering international collaboration without compromising data sovereignty. A big thank you to all partners and collaborators for the inspiring discussions and the shared commitment to advancing equitable and secure data science. #INSPIRE #DSWB #IamAPHRC #DSWB

Artificial intelligence in health is advancing rapidly. The evidence base in low- and middle-income countries isn't. For instance, between 2018 and 2023, 86 RCTs were conducted globally on #AI health tools. Only four took of those place in LMICs. At a time when many of the boldest claims about AI relate to expanding access and improving equity, this gap matters. This is why initiatives like the newly launched 𝗘𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 (𝗘𝗩𝗔𝗛) that prioritise rigorous, context-specific evaluations are so important. The initiative brings together the Gates Foundation, Novo Nordisk Foundation and Wellcome Trust to support rigorous evaluations of AI-enabled health tools that are ready for use in LMIC health systems. The objective is not hype. It is practical evidence. EVAH aims to clarify where these tools add value and how they can be safely and responsibly integrated at scale, identifying under what conditions AI can improve health outcomes, strengthen system efficiency, and reduce inequities in access and care. The first call for applications - implemented in partnership with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) - is now open. For organisations deploying AI tools within LMIC health systems and willing to subject them to serious evaluation, this is a meaningful opportunity to build the evidence base the sector urgently needs. 🚨 The deadline is April 1st 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e9Yg53wp
