A new approach to long-distance monitoring of submarine power cables was presented by Sumitomo Electric and AP Sensing at the CIGRE Paris Session 2026, where it received the Best Paper Award in the category of Future Cable Systems and Innovative Cable Applications. The new system combines distributed acoustic sensing and optical transmission technologies to achieve unprecedented range and accuracy in locating external damage to submarine HVDC cables. With more than 30 times the precision of conventional fault-location methods, the system will significantly reduce response times and help improve the resilience of offshore renewable energy infrastructure. For long-distance HVDC submarine cables, there have traditionally been areas that could not be continuously monitored. Our latest technology changes that. By enabling real-time monitoring across previously unseen sections of the cable, we can help our customers detect external damage earlier, locate incidents more accurately, and respond faster. This is more than a technological advancement. It is a step towards making critical energy infrastructure more visible, resilient and reliable. Very proud of our team and our partner, AP Sensing, for this achievement, recognised with the CIGRE Paris Session 2026 Best Paper Award. #HVDC #SubmarineCables #OffshoreWind #GridResilience #Innovation #CIGRE https://lnkd.in/e3kHbvzW

Sumitomo Electric Industries is pleased to announce our collaboration with Meta and NEC Corporation to build Petal, the world's first petabit transoceanic submarine cable system. Petal will span approximately 7,000 km between the United States and France. When service begins in 2029, Petal will set a new standard in the data transmission capacity of submarine optical communication systems. Sumitomo Electric's 2C Z-PLUS Fiber™ ULL, the world's first mass-produced ultra-low-loss multicore optical fiber, is one of the key technologies that will enable Petal to achieve petabit capacity without demanding a proportional increase in power over today's most advanced submarine cable systems. As a pioneer with nearly four decades of experience in ultra-low-loss fiber manufacturing for submarine systems, Sumitomo Electric is proud to contribute to the next generation of global communications infrastructure. Sumitomo Electric Industries is pleased to announce the completion of the SDM4 Multicore Fiber Multi-Source Agreement with AFL, Corning Incorporated, and TeraHop, as well as the public release of the SDM4 Multicore Fiber MSA Technical Specifications, Version 1.0. The specification defines the common requirements for four-core multicore fiber designed for AI data centers, campus networks, and other short-reach optical links. By establishing a common technical foundation, the SDM4 MCF MSA aims to support multi-vendor interoperability and help accelerate broader industry adoption of multicore fiber technology. The specification may also serve as a foundation for future international standardization activities. We believe this milestone represents an important step toward higher-density optical connectivity for next-generation AI infrastructure. What if CO2 could be more than emissions—and become a raw material for everyday products? 🌱 In Japan, Sumitomo Electric Industries has developed metacol, a patented technology that turns captured CO2 and unused iron into iron carbonate. This material can be blended with recycled paper, plastic, and other materials for products ranging from stationery to roads♻️ Because the process requires no extra energy to produce iron carbonate, it helps avoid a common dilemma in decarbonization: creating more CO2 while trying to reduce it. Metacol points toward a circular, carbon-negative future🌍✨ Read more in the full article: https://lnkd.in/gcz52F9f #Sustainability #CarbonNegative #Decarbonization

Within the vast organization of the Sumitomo Electric Group, there's one company in particular that plays a key role in fostering collaboration: AutoNetworks Technologies (ANTech), our automotive R&D hub in Japan. In a new feature article, we describe how ANTech works with other companies to continuously add value to automotive wiring harnesses. Examples include the development with Sumitomo Wiring Systems of a next-generation flat wiring harness that saves space and reduces electromagnetic noise; the application of Sumitomo Electric's material technologies to miniaturize EM noise filters for electric vehicles; and the integration of a connected gateway with biometric sensors from Sumitomo Riko to enhance driver safety. As the mobility sector continues to advance, ANTech President Hiroki Hirai says, "we are determined to fulfill our role as the intersection of the Sumitomo Electric Group's synergies."
